Player Discussion Thatcher Demko

We dealt our 2nd best bargaining chip for an offensive defenseman (who while not horrible defensively isn't what I'd call an higher end defensive player that can remotely cover for the slugs like OEL on the team).

Are we referring to Hronek here? There's a reason why there is a saying: Offense is the best Defense!

When the opponent's are too busy fishing the puck out of their own net, they don't have time to shoot back!

I'm not going to deny I've said some realy whoppers over the years. And this is merely one of them.:naughty:

Well to be honest, when I heard the Canucks traded a high 2nd round pick in a deep draft for an injured defensemen that was gonna need to be re-signed at an even higher price... I didn't like the sound of it back then either. But happy to be pleasantly surprised this year!!!

I think the only other player I've been fooled more was JT Miller. Didn't think he had it in him to be honest (never doubted his skill/talent, only his motivation/desire). Never been more pleasantly happy I was wrong.

Is Demko playing up to his standards lately?

or is it just the regression hammer finally hitting him after the insane GSA bender he was on.

Tocchet was forced to rigorously defend Demko when he was asked about him in his post-game presser.

But the questions are legit.......four goals on 24 shots, and two of goals leaked through him. Fact is the Canucks needed more out of him last night to have a chance to win against the high-flying Av's.

When Demko isn't on his A-game, he's giving up some juicy rebounds and making some poor decisions when he's out of the crease handling the puck. Both were on display last night.

I really wish that makar goal didnt get through him. it was a back breaker. but its been since that Toronto game when the media spotlight is on.

In the first period, Mikheyev was in alone on Georgiev and got stoned.....Makar was in alone on Demko with the game on the line in the third period and scored on a shot that basically leaked through. And that as they say, was the ballgame.

Sometimes on the road, your goalie has to come up with a key save at a crucial time. Last night the guy making all the crucial saves was Georgiev.

He's regressing a little bit but not serious regression, just the normalizing that's happening to all the other top goalies in the league right now.

The only regular goaltenders (starters and platoon guts) with a better GAA are the Boston duo, Adin Hill and Cam Talbot. It seemed like a bunch of them had a sub 2.0 GAA not too long ago and now Quick and Hill are the only ones who are sub 2.0. Domingue and Lyon do as well but they've only played 1 game and 2 games respectively.

He's not at his best now though, that's for sure. Just like the rest of the team.

1. Will Thatcher Demko end the season with 26 more wins to become top-3 in franchise wins?
2. Does he end his current Canucks contract as the winningest goalie ever drafted and developed by this franchise? (He is signed for another two seasons)

No and maybe. Luongo at his peak had around 40 wins and averaged about 35 wins/season. If Demko can come close to that he will be the winningest drafted and developed by the end of his contract. I don't see him getting another 26 wins this season though.

And, one more thing, his contract doesn't suck!

with a capable backup in DeSmith, I hope he doesnt need to be playing too much down the stretch drive. thats what these early wins is about. We need him to play 16+ straight quality games come April. we know he can do it, he did it before. Ask Vegas.

It's so hilarious/sad/terrible that Richard Brodeur was the team's starting goalie for almost the length of the 1980s and only has 126 wins.

Dude, don't get me started. If you want to have fun (or ya know, not) look at the list of players that would have been the points leader for the franchise if they played their whole careers with us and put up the same points, which I concede is not realistic, but like John Ogrodnick would be our goals leader and most fans my age don't know who the f*** that is even.

What I came here for, I've been doing some thinking over the season and many will say that he breaks down early or loses steam, but honestly if you think back to some saves he's made...particularly with his pads along the ice, I think it could be a minor injury. We know about his knee, but sometimes I see him extending way beyond any other goalie

When you look around the league, it seems half the teams in the NHL have 'goaltending issues'. The Islanders, Hurricanes, Sens, Leafs, Kings, and even the Oilers early in the season all have the same lament: "Our season wouldn't be going off the rails, if we could just get a save".

And even those teams with quality starters like the Rangers, Lightning and Avalanche are being forced to play their starters into the ground, because they don't have a trustworthy backup.

Canucks have not one, but two capable NHL goalies. The starter is in the Vezina conversation; and the backup isn't too bad either. It's probably the most underrated aspect of this breakthrough season.

It’s funny too because Demko hasn’t even looked as strong as in some of his other years outside of the start of the season. I wonder if we’re getting to a point where the stick tech and players growing up with it, and how open the game is, especially off the rush and with activated D, is making it too hard for goalies to stay on their games and we’re just seeing the result of the skaters getting too good.

Little bit of this and that and it adds up.
Pads shrinking, better video for analyzing goalie weaknesses, even less fighting leading to 4th lines capable of scoring instead of being goons have led to more scoring.

But I think that also makes the goalie position even more important, ability to make that extra big save and consistency is more important than ever before

It won't be. For years whenever the Canucks have some success they attribute the success to the team having good goaltending without factoring in the investment made to having good goaltending. Like ya if you don't have good goaltending you're likely not going to be successful. On your list of teams with "goalie issues" the Isles are the only team that have a "right" to be disappointed by their goaltending.
