Player Discussion Thatcher Demko

Well - if Demko does finish the season continuing with this level of play, he’ll easily be worth it, IMO. He’s just entering his prime, and securing such goaltending for the long term will be crucial. Just as crucial as getting the Pettersson and Hughes contracts done.

His value has certainly sky rocketed the last few weeks. A few weeks ago there were people that said it was a risk when I said we should give Demko Schneider's extension in 2012.

Markstrom had numerous starter seasons and a heck of a lot more games played.

This is Thatcher’s first season. How many goalies under 100 GP have got contracts worth 7.4% of the cap?

Schneider is the last one who got a really big deal but he had come off a .915, .929, and .936. He got 6.7% on a three year deal. Schneider was the most attractive young goalie in the entire league though.

I just don’t see the precedent for Thatcher getting a $36MM contract.

The problem is that he is UFA at the end of any extension over a year. I agree 6mx6 would be an overpayment, and I would like to get him at something starting with a 5. I would sign him for that though if that's what it takes to sign him long term though. There is risk there, but there is risk in a short term deal of him being either a lot more expensive, or leaving for UFA.

Columbus clearly is not a destination. Detroit probably isn’t one either now that the team is garbage.
Minnesota is frozen and boring.
Buffalo can’t be on anyone’s list

...and yet even Buffalo has location benefits for travel and super cheap housing prices. And lower taxes. But it's probably the least favorite US city. Detroit has those and a great legacy (plus terrific uniforms)...

Is Demko the best goalie in hockey right now? I mean who's been better over the past 15 games or so?

If the Canucks weren't so capped out with bad contracts, there'd be nothing to discuss. If he wants a long term deal, I'd come up with Markstrom-money. I mean the kid is still only 25....Barring injury, just how good will he be over the next five seasons?

But Demko is a UFA after two more seasons. If he and his agent want the big money, then he signs with the Canucks for two more seasons and then tests the UFA market. I'm afraid I'm not getting good vibes that Jimbo will get this contract right.

If Demko's grand career plan is to eventually play in his home state then I'm afraid there will be little ol' "Jimbo" can do other than offer him silly money with term and hope that Demko's target of choice finds it too rich. Unfortunately for us there are three NHL teams in Cali so if TD has his heart set on this we are screwed.

We're not a bottom UFA destination, but we're not a top one either. I would guess somewhere between 20-25th. The players that we trade for the most part like the city and want to stay, but we have a hard time attracting free agents that aren't from western Canada.
100% disagree...what predicates a good destination for UFA's are the players they are going to be playing with (thats the biggie), and is the team a playoff team, or contender.
Obviously ,cities like Winnipeg, Edmonton,Ottawa are not that attractive..Montreal,Toronto and Vancouver are good cities to live in, and play in (if you like the attention)
In 2013 , players were jumping ship on this franchise, clearly because its window had closed, and there was obvious discontent with the team direction..Its taken years , but I dont think that this is the case now..at all...
.I dont think they would have trouble attracting elite Swedish players...Didnt Nyquist want to sign here last year..?...Russian players,..no..
Couple the core players we have, and the city itself ..I would put it middle of the pack..around 15th...and Vancouver will be a bigger destination as our core matures.

When have players in free agency who didnt have western canadian ties shown a preference to sign in Vancouver at an above average rate relative to the rest of the league?

If I am the average free agent, there’s like ten American destinations that come to my mind before Vancouver. This debate about Vancouver being a big city happened like last summer too. It’s an objective beautiful city but is it a more desirable place to play hockey?

I wouldn’t want to play in my hometown. Americans will naturally prefer to play in their home country as well.

It’s a pretty inconsequential difference though. You’ve got a big advantage if you’re a california team, vegas, dallas, florida and ny state. Don’t think there’s much of a difference in desirability between the big canadian cities. Calgary, Edmonton, WPG, Ottawa are more undesirable than Vancouver. Also, some of the shitty American cities fall below Vancouver.

I definitely wouldn’t be worried about players pining to leave because the players who come here like being here but calling a spade a spade would probably have Vancouver somewhere towards the middle of the pack in desirable cities to play.

Last time I checked, Lucic was from Vancouver.

He took one look at the monstrosity Benning had constructed, and thankfully said "no thanks".

So we got Loui saying "thank you" instead.

Thank . . . goodness?

And didn't Vrbata actually hold out in hopes of coming here to Vancouver?

My gosh, it's almost as though each player has unique circumstances, and each will have different preferred destinations.

Except Columbus.

No one wants to go to Columbus.

Ain’t no one wanting to live in Buffalo dawg.

In reality Demko’s two final RFA years are probably worth about 4mil each, if you sign him for another three years at the 6mil range, that equates to a 5 year x 5.33 contract. That would be fair market value for Demko, but there are a few things to consider:

1) You could probably talk him down a bit as he really only has one good year, and he knows that there’s risk that if he takes a 1 year deal and doesn’t play as well it could drastically compromise his contract. He may be happy to take a bit less to guarantee the overall money.

2) I do think a slight hometown discount should be in order. All these young guys should be doing it to keep the core together. Demko knows Pettersson and Hughes both have to be signed this off-season as well, he’s probably mentally prepared to take a bit less than otherwise would be expected.

Based on all of this, I could see a 5 year deal in the 4.9mil range. That’s my guess.

How do we afford that? We ditch Holtby, it’s the only way. Either trade him this deadline, or in the off-season, or roll the dice he’s taken my Seattle. If not, we can always buy him out which frees up all but 500k of his cap hit next year. The year after we’d be hit with 1.9mil in dead cap space, but we have a lot more overall room that year, so it’d be worth it.

Probably not. It's hard to measure but I think you have to take into account that if you take a good goalie and place him on a team that's going to be shelled every night it's going to make him standout compared to being on a regular defensive team. There's a reason why in international hockey if a game is close the other teams goalie always looks better than Team Canada's.

It's a weird dynamic because if you're goalies not doing well it's going to be an even bigger mess. Usually you want a tight defense gameplan to boost a goalies numbers like the Islanders, but sometimes it works out this way.

I had the same thought the other day of combining Binnington’s two bridge years plus the four years after but with a slight discount. Something around the $5MM number for six years makes more sense to me or it’s a one year deal.

This has to be the play, gotta go long term right away IMO. Kicking the can down the road will only up his price tag.

If they can leverage his lack of experience to get that 'something around 5M' long term, that would be massive.

They'll probably hire John Garrett as the new goalie coach, part-time so he can still focus on doing colour commentary

Can't sign Thatcher to a big contract and let Clarke walk. Period.
Yep....Canucks just splurged $25m over five years for Demko.....but won't spend a couple of hundred grand to bring his goalie coach back.

Just another example of the Aquilini's reverse psychology on contracts. They gut the office staff and skimp on the scouting staff, while they're paying the most expensive taxi squad player in league $6m and another guy $3m to play in Utica.

In Francesco we trust.....er...bust.

5x5 is gonna look like the best goalie contract in the league in a few years.

What do you think about losing Clarke as his positional coach?

Especially how Marky and Bobrovsky regressed after this.

Losing Clark is huge. I mean even if it's as simple as keeping him to keep the goalie of the future happy. Theres no excuse for it unless Clark decided on his own he wont stay for any reason.

Demko seemed very emotional in his plea to management to resign Clarke. If management decides to let our star goaltending coach go, you got to think it will severely piss off our starting goaltender, and just add to the domino effect of disastrous decisions made by upper management. Demko will probably be added to the list of players who want out.

Aquillini better think wisely on this decision, or Brayden Holtby just might very well be the Canucks full time starter.

Just when you think things couldn't get any worse.....

It can.

The disturbing thing with Clarke isn't just that the goaltender they have tapped for the future REALLY wants him back it's that they don't seem to recognize that Demko still has a considerable distance to go in truly establishing himself as a top flight starter. He had a good back half of the year but the first half wasn't that good. There are still technical and mental issues he needs to address to really become consistent. It's possibly the worst time to change up the structure from what has been working for the canucks goaltending crew the past few years (including the advancement in Markstrom's game).

This isn't a veteran goaltender working with the same guy for a decade in a relationship that has gone stale. The relationship has really just started.

Both private analytic firms just had Demko as a top 5 goalie in the NHL this season.

these are the ones contracted by NHL firms.

Impressive stuff. Out of curiosity, what was Markstrom listed at? Both last season and this season.
