Totally agree about the atmosphere that the hockey games. It was really bad. I also notice quite a lack of support at many events as well. We'll never know the actual attendance figures but I doubt they were that great throughout the games. All in all this was one of the worst games from my point of view. It didn't have that Olympic magic like many of the past ones did.

I don't think there was a general problem with the atmosphere, actually I was happy to see that the Russian audience would often cheer also other athletes than only their own. However in hockey the empty seats did prove to be a problem, apparently a lot of people from Moscow and elsewhere with tickets didn't find it worthwhile after all to come all the way down to Sochi and watch the "wrong" teams play in their shattered dream. But that the matches lacked intensity was not up to the organizers or the fans, it was the teams that failed to reach the standards set in earlier Olympics and surprisingly the valiant efforts by some of the smaller hockey nations just underlined that even more.

So thanks a lot Russia! Those were the best Winter Olympics ever and hockey we'll this once just forget. :)

The ice was a perennial trash can for almost all ice-related events, and the mountains due to the stupidity of the events being chosen in an area that wasn't necessarily able to hold a consistent climate for at the very least, "typical" conditions were disappointing. I feel bad for A LOT of the athletes that trained for 4 years, again, and this is for emphasis, 4 YEARS of their lives, to compete on terrible, unusable snow for the most part.

Don't believe me? Re-watch the half-pipe, slopestyle, downhill, and Super Gs for both genders again.

Other than that....

Good work Sochi.

you don't know what embarrassingly bad means if you haven't seen finland's opening ceremony for the athletics world championships in 2005. we had a gandalf-ripoff flying around with a time machine.

Finland didn't have a fat neckbeard doing ****** beat poetry, or a guy in denim prancing around over a field of wheat for thirty minutes, or a miserable Wayne Gretzky standing there with snot frozen all over his upper lip.

overall good hosting, the media criticism prior to the start was overexaggerated in my opinion, one thing we should remember, is that for the russians, same as for us 4 years ago, this generates a lot of pride.

i'm happy Canada won gold in the coveted sport of hockey, which Russia was dreaming of getting

the only criticism i'd have is that 3 of Russia's gold medals were "bought", i.e. won by Victor An, who got booted of the Korean team and Russia and USA were trying to grab him, only Russia paid more.

The media had a bad attitude about these games before they even started, and they continued with that attitude several days into the games. I think Russia did a great job and the media needed to just shut the hell up and move on. The only thing that detracted from my enjoyment were the spoiled media persons with their entitled attitudes whining about trivial crap.

I always thought Gretzky was happy to do it

Great job, Russia.

Would use google translate to that into Russian, but would likely end up with something insulting.

It was five actually, an American snowboarder won a pair of golds for Russia too.

Thank you Russia for doing a great job despite the discontent spewed by the media. In terms of hockey, i never thought going in that Russia and the US will not medal, and both teams would go out in embarrassing fashion, while Canada will win gold the way they did putting on a defensive clinic. Still would have loved a Canada-US or Canada-Russia Final. Maybe in 2018.

I don't know about Viktor Ahn being bought with money but the fact that he won medals for Russia, much like American-born snowboarder Vic Wild, shouldn't bring criticism to the 2014 Winter Olympics. Let's also not forget that Anastasiya Kuzmina and Iouri Podladtchikov, both Russian, won gold for Slovakia and Switzerland respectively. Those are their personal choices and we should respect them.

wasn't meant as criticism, merely an observation. I also believe that Nedved playing for us in 1994 was kind of weird and never like the fact that Germany or Switzerland nationalized so many Canadian players for their hockey national teams respectively in the 1990s.

for White or Anastasiya Kuzmina and Iouri Podladtchikov, i just think the circumstances were slightly different. Of course Ahn had the choice, but only joined out of a feud with the coach. I heard the Korean president is launching some internal investigation.

Russia hosted a good Olympic games, most of the "problems" that caused many to worry before the game turned out to be just media hype and over exaggeration.

You can add Darya Domracheva and her 3 golds for Belarus to the list as well. In the end, it's up to the athlete and the national federation in that particular sport.

Podladtchikov grew up in Switzerland, it's only natural for him to represent that country.

When you look back, Russia's Hockey performance seems a minor disappointment.

Overall, the Russian Olympic team performed way beyond the expectation winning the most golds and the most medals. This success compensated the failure of the hockey team.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. This Olympics meant so much to the Russian people. We were so afraid that we were going to embarrass our selves and the media **** storm at the beginning seemed like that's where it was all going. I'm glad we got through all of that. It was great to see so many amazing athletes compete and represent their countries with huge smiles on their face. It was great to show a different side of Russia and to introduce the world to the peculiar jewel that is Sochi. Hopefully we keep those venues in good working order. So far, between these great games and all the infrastructure improvements this has been worth every penny of the 51 billion. See you all in Korea :handclap:

Gotta agree with this. Otherwise better than expected (safety etc).

It was a wonderful games and by all accounts the Russian people were warm and inviting. I wish I'd gone now.
