Thanks for all the kind words guys. This Olympics meant so much to the Russian people. We were so afraid that we were going to embarrass our selves and the media **** storm at the beginning seemed like that's where it was all going. I'm glad we got through all of that. It was great to see so many amazing athletes compete and represent their countries with huge smiles on their face. It was great to show a different side of Russia and to introduce the world to the peculiar jewel that is Sochi. Hopefully we keep those venues in good working order. So far, between these great games and all the infrastructure improvements this has been worth every penny of the 51 billion. See you all in Korea :handclap:
Our media hates everyone, so don't worry about that.

As a Canadian, I have no problem admitting the ceremonies were much much better @ Sochi compared to Vancouver.

Well Done.

2 years fly by just like that. Remember reading this thread way back when so wanted to bump it. It was one of the most memorable moments of my life and I miss it to this day and will always. Been blessed to have witnessed a couple Olympics, but there will never be another games like such again especially for Hockey with that majestic, most beautiful arena ever built.

Anyone else that was there or anyone infact want to share stories , memories and laughs of just watching the games lol.

At the Canada vs. Austria game, Shea Weber took a full power slap shot from the blue line, he completely missed and it went over the net and ringing into the glass, I was like a couple of rows back and the direction of the puck was literally straight at my head, I flinched heavily with a couple of others, I never saw such pace before, it was insane miles per hour, and every Russian around us were laughing about it the whole game, we even all took pics together, they were rubbing it in a bit, it was amazing hahaha.

And boy, is Sid popular, I can't count the number of Russian people at the games asking , who's Crosby, and I always had to tell . ''vosem’desat sem'' lol.

A friend who was working there, had the opportunity to attend the Canada vs. USA Women's Final, it was pretty much Canadians+Russians vs. American fans, and when Poulin scored the winning goal, a huge ''bear'' of a man as he described him, gave him a bear hug whilst all Russians&Canadians celebrated Canada's victory, he remains confused to this day who was happier of the victory

I was at the game and did not notice the Russians caring. Very few Americans in the stands

Every event I went to Canada won gold. No exaggeration. The cool thing about the games was there were so few North Americans there that we all just formed a group. Everybody knew each other and since I knew Russian I was a valuable friend to have.

So after Canada beat Sweden and the games were over there was this celebratory apocalyptic attitude during the fireworks. As the Canadian good luck charm I had free drinks all night.

YES!!! This is so true, I feel like these games everyone was a tight knit group, Heck, we might have crossed paths also for all we know haha! I mean you compare it to the Fifa World Cup or even Vancouver 2010, it just a huge party where as this felt like everyone there was connected in someway to eachother. I suppose the tone of the media coverage on this side of the planet helped that, even to this day people here live in a delusional world of how things worked in Sochi, it's hilarious.

But I mean also not only if you were from Canada or USA, but I mean I came across Finns, Czechs, Slovaks, even a father of a Slovenian player, who I bumped into many times and we just got to know eachother. It was unique, and the volunteers, oh my goodness, they were incredible, all wanted Canada Gloves hahaha, by the end of the games it seemed like most of them had them on lol. The emblem and colourful design of the games was amazing, just like Russians, it was a work of art.

I didn't realize until after when a friend sent me this, but I was passing by when this lady was filming her gags with the Canadian guy, @ 3:05 ''Jeans? This is Russia, you need trousers.''

Hahaha. The Olympic park was amazing, the whole cluster was unbelievably convenient and it made for fun interaction between all the different venues after the events. And the palm trees, Winter Olympics, walking around like it's summer with palm trees around you just felt so magical lol.

Did you get out to Krasnaya Polyana?

I went to a couple of events in Krasnaya Polyana. Honestly the thing I noticed most was how the area had changed. I was there seven years before when they were still bidding for the games. It was just a little restaurant and a spring.

I dunno, did you ever hang out in front of Canada house drinking beer? If you did. We met haha

I still feel Vancouver was slightly better, but I'm bias. Congrats Russia on hosting an amazing Olympic Games!

Vancouver is absolute better in terms of atmosphear. Hockey part in vancouver better in 10000000 times

Atmosphere was infinitely better in Sochi than Vancouver and no one I've met that went to both has yet to disagree.

Although they both made Turin look terrible.

The hockey was ok. But as a whole, this was the worst Olympics in recent memory.

Easy there tough guy, Sochi will go down as the greatest winter Olympics in history, from the theatrics of the athletes to the spellbinding atmosphere that the Russian people gave us to the dazzling venues and awe inspiring culture of Russia.

Having been to a couple I know there will never be another Sochi again, everything was first class about it, American and western world propaganda might tell you otherwise, but anyone who was there as I was knows a games as such can never be topped let alone duplicated.

Russians are artists and no one can come up with such beauty as they did for Sochi. It was truly ''Hot, Cool, Yours.'' It was Unbelievable and every moment was breathtaking, especially the beer in front of Canada house where I'm sure I saw poster Xokkeu hahaha.

Don't make me laugh. Sochi is nowhere near Lillehammer 1994, Salt Lake 2002 and Vancouver 2010. It has nothing to do with western propaganda. Nagano 1998 was a great games in Japan. "Spellbinding atmosphere that the Russians gave us"??? Surely, we aren't talking about Sochi 2014. This $50 billion boondoggle is why no country wants to bid for a Winter Olympics anymore. We could have had a Munich, Oslo or Stockholm for 2022, until they all saw the atrocity of Sochi and backed out.

First of all, the Sochi Olympics never should've cost $50 billion. Half of that went to Putin and his cronies, and the rest went into building an athletic centre in a sub-tropical region that doesn't care about winter sports. It was such an unsuitable place to host the WOG, and the only reason it went there in the first place is because Putin thought it would bring prestige to Russia. It was never about sport. It was merely a vanity project that failed.

Second, the general disorganization of the Sochi organizing committee. I remember the hotels in Sochi weren't even fully built just days before the Games started. And these hotels were supposed to house the athletes! They had 7 years to build the venues and facilities, and unlike the Greeks, actually had the money. Seemed like a combination of laziness and corruption.

Third, the judging in the athletic competitions themselves were a travesty. The judging panel was rigged to favour the Russians in the flagship event, ladies' figure skating. It was obvious when you look at how each individual judge made their scores. The Russian lady figure skater was nowhere near as good as the Korean skater, yet won because of shady judging. In fact, there were two Russian lady figure skaters that benefited from bloated scores, but one of them (the smaller, prettier one) fell a bunch of times that the judges had no choice but to deny her gold. But both Russians still scored better than what they deserved.

Fourth, the lack of passionate Russian supporters in Olympic Park. The park was build away from the actual city of Sochi where the real Russians actually lived. Way too sterile and artificial for any spontaneous outbursts of joy like we saw in Vancouver.

And I won't even get into the politics. The human rights violations. The invasion of Ukraine right after the Games. The limitations on press coverage.

I love the Olympics. It only comes around once every 4 years, so I make sure to enjoy it every chance I get. I've been to 3 Winter Games. I follow it closely. I was sorely disappointed with Sochi. "The greatest Winter Olympics in history"?? Puh-leese. Easily the worst in modern memory.

That was literally just copied and pasted media talking points which shows you weren't there.

No, I wasn't there. But I am a big fan of the Olympics and follow them closely, and I know what good Olympics look like, having gone to many previous Games. If you liked it, great. Perhaps you have a different experience with respect to the atmosphere in Sochi that I and a billion others didn't see on tv. But apart from first-hand atmosphere, everything else (corrupt sports judges, atmosphere as viewed by tv, cost of games, pre-games preparation) was, to put it politely, not good.

Who cares how much it cost? Did you pay for it?

What exactly does the annexation of Crimea have to do with how the Olympics were run? They are totally unrelated.

Your post reads like a Fox News talking point......a list of any and every possible thing that could be construed in a negative manner. Seriously, why else bring up the topic of Ukraine?

John McCain would be proud of your post.

Who cares how much it cost? Did you pay for it?

I care that their $50 billion price tag put a sour taste in the mouths of every future Olympic bidder of any democratic country that has to answer to the people. Any bid that has to go through a referendum (pretty much every European country) doesn't stand a chance. Munich had sufficient support for 2018 bidding, yet were completely scared off for 2022. And it wasn't just Munich. It was Switzerland, Sweden and Norway. Now it's up to Korea and China to bring the Winter Olympics back to a positive light.

Ladies and Gents, this is what propaganda does to a person. The above poster probably believes Bears walk around in Russia as well and they're still enemy number one.

Why would you talk in this thread, no one wants you here, let us talk about the greatest Olympics ever and you can enjoy what you think was best in Vancouver (which I was there, was fun, but incomparable to the magic Russia
offered)
