I think the security concerns discouraged a lot of people from traveling unfortunately.

yea its too bad people are way too paranoid im suprised there werent more europeans though , if i wouldnt have to travel from montreal - going to Sochi from Europe wouldnt be that hard

im suprised how good Team Canada did this Olympics we were third i think overall

I think we were projected to do pretty well. Hamelin, was supposed to win a couple more golds too, but he fell twice. All in all as great showing for Canada, we have come a long way in the Winter Olympics.

I was as well, even more surprised that the tallying of medals by gender The Canadian women won.

Congrats Russia, great games. You've come a long way baby:yo:

The medals were actually pretty gender neutral. Canada's women won six of the ten golds, which is pretty equal.

Out of the 23 medals that were specific to gender (discounting the silver in ice dancing and team trophy in figure skating), women won 11 medals and men won 12.

Better Olympics than Vancouver or Torino had, that's for sure.

Vancouver was better AINEC.

They were two very different games. Vancouver was a games implemented in a major urban centre. Sochi was basically the exact opposite, it was truly an "Olympic Village", because the place is so isolated.

To be honest, I wonder if the athletes (especially the NHL'ers) didn't enjoy these games more than Vancouver. They got to walk around the venues and just hang out in relative anonymity. There is no way they could do that in Vancouver.

Particularly for Team Canada, I know Vancouver meant more, and the energy inside the arena today utterly paled in comparison to Vancouver but I bet the NHL guys loved how isolated and left alone they were at these games. They were free to just relax, have fun, and concentrate on hockey.

Regardless of comparisons, as a sporting spectacle these games were terrific. Kudos Russia.

I meant the Canadian women beat the women from the other countries

I'm so happy Russia managed to pull all the strings and make this so good! Also so cool with the Olympic rings humour the showed during todays closing ceremony! :handclap:

Okay then, my apologies. I just find it kind of funny because there's been a lot of Canadian girls >>> Canadian guys comments online the past few days and the boys actually won more medals.

Proud of our girls though for doing so well. Leading the gold medal count against other countries' women is nothing to scoff at.

50+ billion gets you a much better Opening and Closing ceremonies than the 6-7 billion that Vancouver spent.

The actual Games however turned out better than expected and the volunteers did a great job as always, but Russia is still Russia. Corruption, overspending, human rights violations, etc. I'm big into the Winter Olympics but let's also not forget some of the things that are really important after these 17 days.

I might be wrong, but i'm pretty sure that anyone who was involved with running the winter Olympics read HFBoards.

Maybe it was just me but I always look forward to the Winter Olympics much more so than the summer but this one was a letdown. Don't think its anything the Russians did. I just feel like overall the enthusiasm was not their like I would expect, the skiing and snowboarding was a big disappointment as it just seemed like none of them were every in real control for about 90% of the events. The hockey was ok but it was not the best I would have expected. Even watching the figure skating I just kind of felt it did not match up to past years. To add to that the fact that so many venues were just not close to being filled kinda sucks to see.

All in all the best thing to watch in these Olympics was Canada play the semi's and finals. Shows just pure dominance from a team in particular watching the defense being absolutely flawless was a awesome thing to watch.

Overall enthusiasm did feel less. One thing is that there were not large crowds of locals crowding the venues and surrounding areas. It seemed attendees were all accredited family and friends. I get it that there were security concerns and I thank the Russians for keeping everyone safe. They did a very good job.

Hard to not point out the 50 000 000 000$ it cost but on a positive note, I am extremely proud of all our Canadian Athletes, and a big fan of all these man and women dedication to their passion.

Congrates to all athletes from all nations.

There are no "best" Olympic games. Instead, each one has its own unique venues, charms, athletes, and defining moments. We'll see what Pyeongchang, South Korea brings to the table in 2018.

That being said, I was surprised how un-Russian these games came across to the viewer. For the Winter Olympics in Russia one almost expected a Siberian feel or snow covered Moscow image. In its place we get the balmy coastal resort town of Sochi.

Sochi Olympics reminded me of the Calgary ones because we had a heat wave during those too. Also, the aerial pics of the buildings were similar.

Sochi is a beautiful looking place. It's about even in longtitude with Portland Ore. About 370,000 people, and it reminds me a bit of Kelowna, only bigger. Winters and summers for temperature are about the same as B.C.'s Okanogan. More rain, like 60 inches a year.

I'd live there if I couldn't find a place in Varna across the Sea in Bulgaria. Russia did a good job, imo

Funny thing how the media has forgotten to mention that there were no terrorist attacks. When fear mongering fails, they just conveniently drop the subject

When thinking of the cost, it's important to note that not all of the money went towards the olympics, a lot of it was for improving the infrastructure of the city and area to serve as a holiday resort for years to come. Also there will be a Formula one race at Sochi starting from 2014 which needs good infrastructure around it.
