Team Finland WC 2023

Vatanen seems to be healthy. Had two goals yesterday to help seal the first championship for Geneve. Wonder if he makes the team?

I was dead sure Crosby would decline but on the other hand was surprised that Bedard said no.

It's quite the kerfuffle in Sweden. Apparently they said yes then no? I'm not 💯 sure but figure has to do with insurance
The media is saying the EP wanted insurance for his next contract. They are saying they can't insure a value that doesn't exist. And saying it's cost millions. Swedes only have 5 nhlera currently which is crazy given there are around 100 of them...

Very sad state of affairs indeed

Paul Maurice claims barkov was suffering from some illness. Let's see what happens tonight. If Boston knocks Florida out I reckon no Barkov for the tournie.

They'll probably get Zibanejad and Adrian Kempe. I don't know if insurance things could stop these as well.

I don't know if this could be a reason for a Finnish player not to join. Luckily there should be some profit from the last year of home tournament so this can't be an issue. Very unfortunate situation for Sweden that this is the reason for a good player having to miss the tournament.

What a night of matches coming in the upcoming round of games. Many big Finnish fishes will be playing in every one of the 4 matches.

I'm an Oilers fan. Kempe has been unbelievable! He may knock us out. Arvidson too! Korpisalo was unreal as well for the first 4 games!

Who is the ideal team to lose for the Finn's? I was saying, given how weak this year is looking, that if NJ loses... The Swiss are in great shape. For Czechs it would be Boston. Is it Canes for the Finn's?

Personally I'd go with Colorado. Just have a strong hunch that Rantanen would go. Would love to see him light the lamp after his career high season in goals and points total. Also, agreed Kempe has been on fire. You think Pastrnak would go if Boston is out?

I don't know... As a big fan... He honestly has always shown up for us! Is he passed... I wouldn't be upset. I honestly would love if a Czech fueled Boston team won the cup (if my Oil don't). I'm hoping for one of Necas or Chytil. I think they'd do very well for us.

Necas has really grown into a leading player. Chytil would be huge too for the other Jalonen's team. Maybe we will see a Fin Vs Cze final! Imagine that! Jalonen Vs Jalonen. Hahaha

I currently see it as wide open! No team is stacked. Reminds me of a non NHL Olympics.

Could be Denmark vs Finland!

I don't ever want Oilers out because McDavid loves to represent Canada. I feel like he would come this time as well. I got bad memories from that one time when Finland played Canada in a final with McDavid scoring the only goal in the game.

Ideal team in my opinion to go out would have to be Dallas, because it seems inevitable that Finland will get some good forwards from other NHL teams. Dallas has 3 good Finnish defensemen and Hintz. It would be Hintz' home town tournament as well, so no doubt that he would want to join the team. So Dallas is the only team that would completely change how good the situation with Finnish defenders would be.

Heiskanen would be amazing! He'd probably be the best D in the entire tourney!

If it freed up Faksa and Blumel but not Oetinger I'd love it.haha

Heiskanen was really good in last year's tournament. Him and Lindell arrived late from Dallas. Hintz had an injury back then. Mikael Granlund came from Nashville late as well and they all were helpful additions. That is a distant dream now though because Dallas is leading the series 3-2.

It felt for a while that Czech ice hockey players were reducing in the amount but it still stands that Czechs are everywhere in almost every NHL team, so no matter what team gets eliminated, Czechs will have a team in WHC with many NHL players. Maybe the top end talent from the best days has gone down a little bit. Golden years of talent or so, but Czechs still have many good ones and can't be underestimated with the leadership of K. Jalonen, who is a good coach. I definitely don't want Boston out for Czech to have Pastrnak. Dealing with the Czech PP with him in the team would be a nightmare. Probably the same thing for other teams thinking about Patrik Laine. He'll be good on the big ice. Laine with more space to get his shot off. Actually wait, is this tournament even on big ice now? Memory says that they were planning to have this played on small ice for the first time.

I have no idea.

I've been saying for years.. I don't care which rink size but pick one for Europe and NA!

Going to small rinks is cheaper and more profitable so I'm fine if they all do.

I agree with that so much. Same size ice for everyone. Hopefully it's small ice in the WHC and it stays that way and eventually the European leagues will make it small as well.

It has to be so hard to grow up a big rink, be a good player and then go to a small rink and try to make the NHL! It's a disadvantage. I used to think big ice meant more skill. I don't anymore... small ice, you gotta be able to 'stick handle in a phone booth' because there is always someone on you.

As a funny aside.. I usually play (shittily) on small ice and played on the Olympic ice.. got the puck at the blue line and NO ONE gave a shit I was winding up so I took my hardest shot!!! It got the goalie about 7 minutes later.lol Totally different game.lol

Dallas and Carolina advance, while BOS-FLA and COL-SEA go to Game 7. Now, I don't particularly root for any of these teams to win or lose - the chips fall where they fall - but still, it's hilarious to see 0 out of 4 favorable results in a single night, from this squad's perspective. (On top of it all, we saw Finnish players potting big goals in all matchups.)

That BOS-FLA especially has been a riot to watch. Darned entertaining. I have to say, a part of me would like to see the Cats knock the Bruins out - simply because no one, including yours truly, saw it coming - while another part would probably curse that result pretty long and hard.

It was a complete disaster round of results. I should've gone fully pessimist mode and done some betting, sigh.

Bergeron has now 0 wins and 2 losses in the playoffs. How funny is that. Did they rush him in at half form? They were doing better without him. He better help Boston win it in the game 7.

The positives:

If Colorado advances and knocks out Seattle, it will be Dallas vs Colorado on the playoffs round 2, which would most likely mean that we can have some late arrivals. Hopefully this round 2 series wouldn't go to game 7, but it very well might.

Tonight New Jersey could eliminate Rangers and give us a good chance to get Kakko.

Yeah but how often do players come from round 2? Can't remember any.

I think that we are ahead of schedule compare to last year. Covid is now just a distant memory, which didn't delay the season. I'm not sure but the season schedule might have been set up in a way that would've allowed some covid delays. Quick series would be preferred to increase the odds of having some players from round 2. Maybe Colorado found their fire and will now demolish Seattle and end the Dallas series in a 4-1 or so.

Looking at the NHL schedule. If a team plays a game every second day or so in the playoffs, some of the series may end before the WHC start date, which is 12th of May. So there is plenty of time.

I think in the 1st round there's been some 2 day breaks also. Possibly Jalonen and co leave a couple players unstamped in hopes of a 2nd round sweep but i wouldn't count on that. Our best bet is Boston winning game 7.

If it's Dallas Vs Colorado I am convinced Jalonen will hold at least 1 spot for either rantanen or heiskanen/hintz. As you mentioned, more than enough time. Finland's last round robin game is on May 23 Vs Denmark.

I know that but you probably get the point. Second round can end quickly. In time for us to get some really good players still. It's up to Jalonen & Lehtinen how long they want to keep the door open. I'm quite sure it's at least 1 slot they keep open, maybe more. I'm disappointed if it's less than 2 slots they keep open.

Here are the lines for today's second Sweden game. I love to see Kapanen with Suomela experimented. Suomela was with MaG in the first game as well, but JMA was kicked out from today's roster. Second start for Olkinuora against Sweden is interesting. Some real warm up for Olkinuora for the WHC. Bolded players were together in last game as well.

Maalilla:
45 Olkinuora Jussi

1:
60 Granlund Markus – 74 Suomela Antti – 42 Kapanen Kasperi
4 Lehtonen Mikko (A) − 55 Ohtamaa Atte (A)

2:
82 Pesonen Harri – 91 Lammikko Juho – 22 Ruotsalainen Arttu
40 Lindbohm Petteri – 7 Tuomisto Antti

3:
39 Liedes Heikki – 62 Mattila Julius – 27 Kuokkanen Janne
38 Riikola Juuso − 2 Pokka Ville

4:
29 Oksanen Ahti – 28 Tikka Tommi – 12 Anttila Marko (C)
10 Pulli Valtteri − 23 Matinpalo Nikolas

Well I really hope so, but now I'd say it's a 50/50 game. I'm starting to loose faith on Boston. They weren't able to close the series earlier so why would they be able to do any better now? Boston already had a home game where they lost to Florida. Bergeron has +/- minus 4 in 2 games. They must've rushed him in and it messed up their line chemistries. Maybe they should side line him for 1 game and then if Boston wins, bring Bergeron back for the next series, but I don't think it will happen.
