Team Finland WC 2023

Suomela will have big boots to fill in offensive role, unless Jalonen gets two centers from NHL.
Good tourney here and he will be back in North American hockey.
Didn't he just sign in Switzerland? He is getting up there in age too..

I like Lankinen, but there is no urgent need. Olkinuora-Säteri-Larmi would be a good trio. I'm tempted to give Larmia a start or two.
Larmia, the love child of Larmi and Armia.

Suomela is having a great season and performed really well in latest friendlies. I think he s almost certainly surpassed Ruohomaa now.

I get your point though. Will Jalonen like Suomela further down the lineup? I think this may be a year where we just have to possibly accept three positive scoring lines. Plus there's a high chance of plenty top level players that can balance the lines. Armia, Lundell, Luostarinen etc. If the players I think come, then my suspicions are that Suomela makes one of the C spots with one of Luostarinen or Lundell taking a winger spot. If Barkov comes that probably means Suomela is out or extra. Similar if MiG comes, he s under pressure. Right now, I think Jalonen's pecking order of Cs are Bjorninen, Manninen, Suomela. I think almost certainly another C comes overseas.

Maybe i'm misunderstanding you, but 3 scoring lines is pretty basic roster building. Been that way for over a decade. Nothing to "accept" about it.

You can add Barkov. He dont give a shit about playoffs in NHL

He looks like he's playing through some minor injury.

I'm not expecting barkov to come to be honest but would be very happy with Lundell and Luostarinen. Let's see what transpires.

It's been the same story last 3-4 playoffs. He's playing with an injury. It's BS. He's been bad in playoffs his whole NHL career

As little as a shit or less, like you about Finnish players?

Gimme a Saku Koivu, Kimmo Timonen, Jere Lehtinen etc any day. Heck even Luostarinen would be ideal 3rd liner if Panthers didnt have to use him in top 6

It was a joke about Jalonen defensive first mentality.

Well he usually declines also when it comes to world championship.

Well the games are not usually in his hometown with his homeboy winger on the team. Besides has he actually even declined more than a couple of times?

EDIT: Actually looked into this:

2014 - Olympic year
15 - Played in the tournament
16 - Played in the tournament
17 - Injury plagued season
18 - Declined
19 - Declined
20 - Tournament cancelled
21 - Injury plagued season
22 - Unavailable due to NHL playoffs

So yeah two straight up declines.

I would assume Suomela has some kind of NHL clause but who knows what the guy thinks. He might have bad and bitter memories about North-America, because he wasn't playing too bad there and he still had to spend a lot of time in the AHL back then, so maybe he has had enough of that and doesn't want to go, but pure level wise he seems like an NHL level guy now.

Armia confirmed

"- Seuraavan kerran uusia lisäyksiä joukkueeseen tulee mahdollisesti sitten, kun Euroopan sarjojen finaalit ja NHL:n pudotuspelien ensimmäinen kierros on pelattu, Lehtinen paaluttaa."

So no Granlund or Lankinen? Sounds like it. Or maybe they just add locks from now on.

By the way after this statement people speculating about Granlund and Lankinen, but i wonder about Välimäki. He said on an MTV interview he would like to come.

I'm not surprised if Jalonen just doesn't want him, because there are so many of his trusted guys as possible options. Välimäki is good enough for me though. Maybe Välimäki is a back up guy whom they would ask if Dallas advances. Välimäki has still enough time to do few games in the EHT tournament and maybe he could impress Jalonen there.

I'll list most of the defender options. Top side of the list are locks or closest to locks in my opinion.

Määttä
Lehtonen
Vatanen - not confirmed.
Ohtamaa
Lindbohm

Kemiläinen - Tappara - not confirmed.
Seppälä - Tappara - not confirmed.

1-3 Dallas D-men, but they need to lose that series first.

Jokiharju - injured - maybe he recovers in time? I don't know.

Friman - Jalonen familiar.
Pokka - Jalonen familiar.
Riikola - A good option as well.

Miika Koivisto - not confirmed. From SHL finals that just ended. They did win the championship there, so we'll see if he has the hunger to come battling for a spot for the WHC team.

Tuomisto - some people here on this forum like Tuomisto. I wouldn't pick him though. Enough options for Jalonen as it is.

Saarijärvi - He needed to show more in the practice games so far, so I think he won't be an option unless he improves in the upcoming games.

So it's getting crowded and if Dallas players won't be coming then that could be Välimäki's chance. Btw I'm surprised that Melart wasn't invited to the camp. Is he injured or didn't he want to come? Maybe he wasn't invited because Jalonen and Lehterä already know that it's getting crowded.

I respect the Finnish national team, but I really hope that the ref will not help you, as it was at the last World Cup. Over thirty mistakes in favor of the hosts. That's a lot.

Yeah maybe management felt he's too similar of a player as Lehtonen and Vatanen who are 100% locks. I just tought with Jukka's 8D system there would be room for him.

You mean judges like this?

Or this?

I don't see how either can help you in a hockey game.:dunno:

If the Canadians complain about the refereeing, then it really was bad. I want to see fair play, not the acting skills of Hannes Björninen 😅

Ok but don't come here to complain before the games have even started. Maybe best to keep this thread on Team Finland roster talk.

Czech Hockey Games is perfect to test Larmi

How freaking long you guys ( Canadians ) will cry and whine of that overtime penalty.
IT WAS CLEAR TRIPPING by IIHF rulebook and usually that is at least 9 / 10 times 2min penalty.
So STFU and move on.

Filppula is seriously considering retirement.
Cannot blame him of that because Filppula already is in triple gold club
so happy and healthy retirement days if it really is over after this season.
Retiring whilst still being able to play shows that he is probably very satisfied with his career - as he should be!

Filppula has earned his retirement if it truly happens after this season.
Having 1056 NHL regular season games 1 stanley cup 1 olympic gold and 1 IIHF worlds gold
under his belt Filppula has done his services to Finnish hockey as a player.

But if into future Filppula is open any coaching related position
in Finnish national teams ( men's or juniors ) then bring him in immediately.
