Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

Would Florida part with Eetu Luostarinen? He is a very solid role player. 3rd line player. Can play C and LW. Signed for two more seasons. $3M cap hit. Florida needs to add a D. OEL and Montour left in free agency. Florida will have $3.5M in cap space at the deadline. Lindgren's style fits that team.

id do it just do he lays out Meeka so we can LTIR him.

Luostarinen is one of their primary penalty killers, along with Lundell. His production has dropped since signing his extension, but that one productive year was probably the anomaly.

I can't imagine they are looking to move him. They have 23 mil in cap space for next year and their only significant free agents are Ekblad and Bennett.

Could they be interested in Smith and Lindgren? Smith can replace the PK minutes. Perhaps they view Smith as a guy they can reasonably resign as Bennett is likely to walk

Frederic is easily better than Carrick and Goodrow. Look at the full picture, not just the last 50 games.

He’s not really what they need though. Staple doesn’t know anything so we can all take a breath.

I like Frederic the player but I’m not sure what he is. Is he a center or winger? Is he a point producer or a Hathaway? I’m a bit concerned about the type of contract he gets on his next deal.

Trenin got what 5 years at $3.5m last offseason? That’s a horrendous deal and he never scored as much as Frederic has. If I’m Trent’s agent, that’s the deal I point to. 5 years, $4m per season.

That’s steep for a guy who will be lucky to break 25 points this season. He’s also pretty bad on faceoffs and even in his best year he took like 260 faceoffs. That doesn’t scream center to me.

Staple suggested the Rangers trade Othmann and Kreider for Frederic and Brazaeu a few days ago. A few months ago, Staple suggested Othmann and a first round pick for Mario Ferraro. Brazeau is 27 and was a minor leaguer until this season. Take it easy. Or the Rangers would need to add to a Kreider for Frederic deal.

The Bruins, muddling along in the same vicinity as the Rangers, have a couple of UFA forwards who might fit the Drury mode: Trent Frederic and Justin Brazeau. Neither would be earth-shaking additions (though the prices are still higher than you’d like), but that’s two sizable players with some skill to provide depth behind the new-look Rangers top six.

The Rangers are short on draft capital, so acquiring one of those Bruins would mean either trading Lindgren (and Smith) first and flipping some picks or parting with a prospect. If the Rangers were willing to let Brennan Othmann go, they might even convince the Bruins to take Chris Kreider since surely Boston is a place Kreider doesn’t have on his 15-team no-trade list.
