WC: Team Finland 2022 roster talk

The guy is a national hero. Will be for a long time, he will leave a legacy no Finnish hockey team coach has never had before. We will miss him so much.
No poo. Three-time major tournament winner as a head coach - and the *only* Finnish one. Also, only two coaches in the world have won the Olympics, the WHC, and the WJC. The other is Mike Babcock.

The best international coach in today's hockey. Full stop.

I wonder if we'll get Vatanen back for the semis. Hopefully no one else gets ill, like Mörkö...

Jalonen has won 4 titles in my mind.

One NHL team rather (was it Islanders?) takes Brad Lambert's uncle as their head coach while Jukka Jalonen is showing public interest towards NHL. They are crazy over there for not giving Jukka Jalonen a shot. They don't want Stanley Cups? Even Tuomo Ruutu will be a head coach there before J.Jalonen.

I believe that their reasoning for not giving Jalonen a job is his English language skill, which I think is rather good. They tested him when they invited him to have a speech on that one internet video meeting between coaches and hockey people. I can't remember what it was called.

Marko Anttila has now scored 7+3=10 points in last 10 playoff games.

20222 quarter final, 4-2 win vs Slovakia
1-2 Anttila
2-2 Anttila
4-2 Mänelanaen (Anttila) assist EN

2022 Olympic final, 2-1 win against Russia
2-1 Björninen (Anttila) GWG assist

2022 Olympic quarterfinal, 5-1 vs Switzerland
3-0 Anttila (in 5-1 win)

And this most GOD-mode tournament
2019 WHC Final, 3-1 win vs Canada
1-1 Anttila, equalizer
2-1 Anttila, GWG

2019 Semi-Final, 1-0 win against Russia
1-0 GWG, Anttila

2019 Quater-Final, 5-4 (ot) win against Sweden
4-4 Anttila, equalizer when goalie pulled

Was watching this to get hyped for the semifinal on Saturday. That 2019 team was something else.. one of the biggest achievements in Finnish hockey ever. I'd still rate 2019 higher even if we win this year.

All of your opponents had great teams in 2019. Sweden, USA, Canada and Russia had stacked teams full of NHL stars. Since covid hit, this tournament has basically been all Euro guys and mediocre NHLers. The rosters on the other top teams in 2019 were all insane compared to how they are now. Finland winning in 2019 is probably the biggest upset in recent World Champinship history considering the quality of other teams and that is Jalonens most impressive acheivment.

It does suck that the level of talent at the worlds has declined so much since 2019. The 2021 and 2022 tournaments have had very, very little talent in comparison to the last few tournaments before Covid. And it’s undeniably linked. Seriously, look at the rosters from the past few tournaments before Covid hit. Sweden, Russia, USA, Canada had high quality NHL players in every single position, on almost all lines. Covid and tighter NHL scheduling has really made the world championships a lot less entertaining and the quality of play much lower. It sucks. But hopefully we get star studded tournaments like 2019 soon again when Covid and scheduling impats lessen.

Yeah I hope so as well. Maybe Finns could get more of our NHL "stars" on the team as well some other year.

It was a Finnish miracle on ice. Do you remember on the QF vs Sweden when Finland pulled the goalie and Swedish player missed the empty net by few inches. That entire story would've been over then.

This is the last time when Finland had a really stacked roster in a WHC tournament in 2016. The coach was the other Jalonen, Kari Jalonen (WHC team Czech's coach currently). Some of these players weren't the players they are today but many of them were already really good at this point. The result was silver against a strong roster by Canada.

Practise lines today. Seppälä dropped out of the lineup.. I don't understand
It's in case they need to shorten the bench - as in, put Heiskanen and Lindell together and give them every other shift.

Ideally, you also want the rest of the pairs to know each other if that happens. Lehtonen-Hietanen and Friman-Vatanen are pretty established pairs at this point. And Ohtamaa and Pokka are familiar with each other and can thus be effective with whatever minutes they end up getting.

must be sick, because you don't drop out your best d-man...

I would't say he has been the best D, but very solid. Lehtonen has been better.. some other D men as well. Like you do't see Hietanen with high stats but he is very solid defensively

Overall play in this tournament, the best d-man for us, he does pretty much everything, with basically zero mistakes.
Dude tries so hard as well, really like him, how he plays hockey, huge heart player!.

I also don't like to see Seppälä out of the line up now, but since Vatanen seems to be fully healthy, you don't leave that experience out. I understand that the question is more about Pokka vs Seppälä, so File's explanation for it makes sense I guess. We have a competitive group of defenders and someone good has to sit out sometimes.

I guess that they liked what Pokka did in last game. I don't have any advanced stats, but in 8 mins TOI Pokka was able to generate a +/- +1. Those are sometimes lucky, but it's not on 0 or -1. It's not bad to get that with small TOI. I like that Heiskanen and Lindell will most likely get big minutes.
