WC: Team Finland 2019 men's World Championships roster talk

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
In a pretty unusual move, Jalonen registered the entire team in one go. So if someone still had their fingers crossed for some last-second additions, it's pointless now. No roster spots left.

Mods: I know there is thread for team Finlands roster, but I just felt that this matter could use a thread of its own, since this list is so long, and feels quite strange. No established NHL-players really in this years team. None. Zero. And just look at this list:

Mikko Rantanen - reason: supposedly injured
Roope Hintz - r: tired?
Patrik Laine - r: didn't feel like it?
Miro Heiskanen - r: just tired, confirmed by his agent
Esa Lindell - r: contract reasons
Sasha Barkov - r: his TEAM refused to let him go
Mikael Granlund - r: family reasons supposedly, since just had baby
Kasperi Kapanen - r: contract reasons?
Rasmus Ristolainen - r: too tired for the 3rd year in a row
Jesperi Kotkaniemi - r: too tired?
Valtteri Filppula - r: ???
Artturi Lehkonen - r: contract reasons?
Mikko Koivu - r: injured
Leo Komarov - r: retired from national team
Joel Armia - r: contract reasons?
Markus Granlund - r: contract reasons?
Markus Nutivaara - r: injured (by Nikita Kucherov in playoffs, who joined team Russia)
Henrik Borgstrom - r: tired?
Sami Vatanen - r: injured
Olli Maatta - r: ???

+ all goalies declined

Is this just incredibly unlucky, or is there something else going on? Too many "tired" players in my opinion, for example Klingberg just joined team Sweden after Stars got eliminated.

Please do some research before you do posts like this, IT ISN'T STRANGE. Almost all our NHL players have expiring contracts, then it ain't strange that they decline. ALL THIS SHIT IS JUST A MADE UP PROBLEM. Last year we had one of our best WC teams in years. 2016 we had several NHL players too. It's just a down year.
Ristolainen is like the only player that refuses to play for the national team.

Yes, the contract situation this year is a real thing.

However, so is this increasing trend of players declining for whatever minor reasons. Some players have declined already many times in their short careers.

IT'S NOT A MADE UP PROBLEM. If you have eyes to see, that is. And are not in denial or in defense mode for your precious players.

The Russians, Czechs and Swedes have had many of their best possible defensive players with them in recent years. Except Finland!
Finland also never has more than 10 NHL players at a WHC, although they have more NHL players than Russia or the Czech Republic. Besides, I can't remember the other 3 hockey nations having 0 players from overseas(NHL), like Finland now. What's this all about?

Swedish tv people said something that they heard that The players dont like jalonen, and in a way that could be True and therefore jalonen closes the door for eventual nhl players. In that way the NO from a player would have no meaning when they cant join the team. Maybe need fresh blood in the coaching staff, I have nothing against jalonen coachwise. But they might need someone ellse for next season.

Also, somehow finnish players seem to get only 4-5 year deals at max, and most likely most of players listed in this thread who have now expired contracts, will only sign 1-2 year bridge deals, thus ensuring that they will be unable to join again in following years.

So many things wrong in this post. Why are there question marks behind "Contract reasons". They are confirmed. Laine was injured basically the full season with his back and then his groin in playoffs so i guess "he didn´t feel like it plus contract negotiations. Would you risk millions of dollars for one tournament??? Rantanen is injured AND has contract negotiations. etc etc. Kotkaniemi had a knee surgery in April so i guess he´s too tired after that one.

Hintz played with a broken foot.. Kotkaniemi underwent a knee surgery.

I don't believe that at all. Most of the young guys have good experience with Jalonen like Laine, Aho, Kapanen etc.

Also Granlund has good experience with him. I don't think it is about Jalonen at all.

Can confirm this is absolute bulls*it. Jalonen is well loved among the country and the players all around.

Every year the speculation about who comes who doesnt appears and I cant understand how people do not understand that these players are humans aswell, they have long seasons and actual lives outside hockey too. They are in no way obligated to come to these competitions .............

All those bolded are either plain wrong or missing a key explanation: such as an expiring contract or an injury or the team blocking the player from going.

intressting anyhow, that many players.. Its truly like it was the olypics 2018 again xD But only for Finland... The B team for finland will be underdogs in alot of games and I feel like the finns play at their best alot of times in those situations. I have my hopes up for a miracle!

To sum up the facts: Ristolainen apparently declined just because, like he seems to do every year. Borgström... reason unknown.

Barkov was not greenlighted by the Panthers. Mikael Granlund recently became a father.

Everyone else has either retired from NT duty, is injured, or has an expiring contract. Especially the list of players to whom the last reason applies is hilariously long. There are 35 Finns who played 30 games or more in the NHL this season. 23 of them will become RFAs or UFAs over the summer. That's a huge pool of players, some of whom would have undoubtedly said yes if they weren't looking for new contracts and, in most cases, raises.

I was just talking about this with some friends, just look at the gold team from 2011; 5 NHLers and what happened..it is and will always be that Finlands strength is mental strenght, teamplay and not the individual skills.

I can hardly imagine that Jalonen should be the reason or the problem that many NHL players refused to come. As far I know Jalonen is as head coach well accepted by the players also from the NHL and btw was not Jukka Jalonen the coach in 2011 when Finland won the last time the title or was it Kari Jalonen?

So inaccurate:

Kotka: knee surgery
Laine: contract
Hintz: played with an injury through the playoffs

2011 was Jukka Jalonen Yes, atleast for me he is already established as the best coach of my time in Finland. Being from Hämeenlinna may have something to do with it though..

You got one thing right, the last name. Best coach Finland has had is Kari Jalonen. Players wanted to play for him and did very well.

Jukka is a drunkard who got handed a great team in 2011 and has been riding the gravy train since then. Clearly players don't want to play for him, but heck, this is Finland, so we recycle the same people over and over.
