If he is healthy, Stamkos will be on the 2022 team.

He can play all 3 offensive positions. He has a good shot to score on chances. He can play in almost any situation. Plus, he usually ranges between 53%-57% in the faceoff circle.

It is for these reasons I think Tavares will also probably make the team, or have a very good chance.

I see a lot of people picking Barzal (as one example). Has Barzal ever played the wing before? He certainly can't take faceoffs, as demonstrated by 41%-43% range the past few seasons. He doesn't kill penalties either.

Canada will take more than 4 centres.

But any additional centres they take will be ones who they can trust to play the wing, trust to play in defensive situations, and trust to take faceoffs if necessary.

Barzal doesn't really fit any of these three roles, so I could see Stamkos or Tavares being taken ahead of him.

The problem I see with Stamkos is he’s for sure no longer one of Canada’s best players. He’s 19th in points per game for Canadian players. He’s probably not even Tampa Bays best Canadian forward. In addition, he’s most a power play specialist at this point, with more than half his goals coming on the PP. I don’t think Team Canada will need PP specialists.

In comparison to Barzal, well he gets less points, but he’s in a much, much more defensive system (Team Canada brass tends to like players that can play in these systems), and he’s playing with less talented players than Stamkos. The quality of Stamkos line mates and D units will not improve that much from TB to Canada. But for Barzal, the talent difference between NYI and Canada will be very large, and talent tends to have an increasing rate of return. Also, neither one will be playing at Center anyways, so, face off ability shouldn’t impact the decision.

Tavares seems to get a lot of his points at even strength, so he’s got good arguments for him to make the team.

Tavares is too slow to play at this level. Stamkos yes, but Tavares doesn’t offer enough at the moment. Point or Couturier both better options

I'm not convinced that he would, but he might. If he does it will be as a winger plus probably as a shooter on the PP, but there are better forwards available overall. His best chance is that his shot, which isn't the weapon it used to be, is still better than most options Canada has and that Hockey Canada does seem to be a fan.

I see three locks at centre in McDavid, MacKinnon, and Crosby. Two locks at RW in Stone and Bergeron. Two locks at LW in Marchand and O'Reilly, though arguably O'Reilly could slot in as the fourth centre. I cannot imagine Stamkos getting a fourth centre spot given where he would be most useful for Canada and that he is always a winger internationally. Guys like Marner and Huberdeau are probably better players than Stamkos, but I think that his edge is that he's a better fit for a team already loaded with playmakers.

Why I think Stamkos and Tavares have decent chances is because they can play the wing and are very strong in the faceoff circle.

They won't be playing centre. But it is still nice to have 2 strong faceoff players for every line, in case the centre gets kicked out of the dot.

I think both are players Team Canada would trust holding a 1-goal lead with 10 minutes to go in the 3rd period, because of their faceoff abilities and their ability to play the wing.

No Tavares - too old and slow.

No Stamkos - terrible in big games.

I have changed my mind on Marner - he has been GREAT this year.

I thought the defense might be a weak spot but it's pretty stacked.

Some of the younger guys have taken a serious step forward and turned into studs.

Makar
Pietrangelo
Theodore
Doughty
Girard
Hamilton
Chychrun
Chabot
Ekblad
Rielly
Parayko
Letang

That's a lot of good defenders to pick through. A collection of 6 from this group is going to be world-class when paired with the forwards.

Only the goaltending seems a bit iffy in its current state.
How come Nurse never gets any love? Big kid, too. He's having a terrific year and really taken the next step.

NO Hamilton.

As others have said, it wasn't that long ago where we were really worried about the back end.

Idk if I’m just being a homer but after seeing the massive strides Nurse has made this year I think he definitely should be on this team.

The goalie situation is worrying fs, we have no one rn that we can point out and say that’s our guy.

I agree on Nurse.

Thankfully we don't need a goalie who can steal a game, just not lose one. There has to be someone we feel confident in.

Yeah, I definitely forgot a few names. It wasn't on purpose.

Really drives home the point of Team Canada's depth on the back end. It's not a weakness at all in my eyes.

Huberdeau McDavid Marner
Mackinnon Barzal Stone
Marchand Crosby Bergeron
Oreilly Scheifele Point
Couturier

HM: Tavares, Perron

Makar Pietangelo
Theodore Doughty
Girard Hamilton
Chabot

HM: Ekblad, Nurse

Fleury
Binnington
Price

HM:
Blackwood, Hart
Fleury in net scares me - flashes of 2004.

What is with our inability to produce goalies?

So when can we pencil in a resurgent Jeff Carter to the 2022 depth chart?

Joking aside, I'm interested in seeing Huberdeau perform in the playoffs. He's played in 10 career playoff games, with not much to show for it, and appeared in only one World Championships (after his sophomore season). For the 2022 team I'd wager he'd almost certainly be on the outside looking in, but he can turn that perception with a strong playoff showing. Being a playmaking winger might work against him, but we're not as deep on the left side as we are the right side. If, for whatever reason, he has a flat playoffs, Armstrong would probably go back to the well with Couture or Tavares, which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Right now our #1 goalie would be Fleury. He’s more than capable of winning games and stealing games. I also think that he’s a well liked guy, he’s been around a long time, won a lot, players like to play for that.

After that, looks like Drieger is next, then I guess you take Price as your third and hope with a great team in front he regains his form.

Realistically with the embarrassing assembly of firepower they have in front of them, as long as they keep it under 4 goals a game they should do the job

The amount of firepower on Canada might overwhelm teams when everything is said and done.

McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby, Marchand, Huberdeau, Marner, Point, Stone, Scheifele, etc.

Wave after wave. It is going to be difficult for other countries to cope with that.

I'm interested to see how Letang does in the playoffs this year. He should probably be top three for the Norris this year, though I don't expect it. Not sure that he brings something that Canada needs but it's good to have options.

He’s from my town so I love him but even when he was the best defensemen (IMO) in the NHL team Canada did not want him, so I doubt they do now

I don't think that he ever should have made a best on best team before and I understand why Hockey Canada never went with him. I also wouldn't select him at the moment, but he's made it interesting. Even with Ekblad down Canada's right side is very strong again.

Letang was a golden boy too during the WJC, and then they almost never considered him again, he never played at the WHC from my recollection either.

Yeah they talked Letang up a lot in 2006 and 2007, when he was the captain. He has not played internationally since, though I'm sure he could have played a few IIHF WC had he wanted.
