Are we gonna have game threads for the womens? That the pads save by our goalie on the last second is the save of the toury.

Canadian ladies looking good. Warming up by beating up on Switzerland 8-0 with 18 minutes left in the game. Thinking double digits is an inevitability in this one.

The new Olympics jerseys are sweet.

Very nice jerseys, but I prefer seeing white and red jerseys from Canada.

Could anyone on team Canada that’s older get a look by NHL teams based on a strong tourney?

After the last Olympics, only Chris Lee and Kevin Poulin received formal training camp invites (if I recall correctly), and both ended up getting cut. There was also some talk about Mat Robinson and Maxim Noreau being approached by NHL teams, but nothing ended up happening. Although it wasn't clear if that was because NHL teams didn't make any formal offers or because both players chose to stay in Europe.

On this year's roster, maybe Knight, Ho-Sang, or Staal get NHL deals if they absolutely dominate, but its highly unlikely that any of the vets get another shot at the NHL. Most of these guys are known quantities that have already received more than enough chances to make it - i.e. Cracknell, O'Dell, Street, Weal, Winnik, Desharnais, Wotherspoon, Gormley, Demers, Barbario, etc.

Yeah I think it's more likely we will see standouts from European nations who earn a look from NHL franchises who may have passed them over or never heard of them, rather than guys from the Canadian/American team who are already very well-known to NHL scouts.

where does the overating of ho-sang come from? the guy is barely a good ahl player and was not good enough for shl.

Fans have to talk about something, the lack of enthusiasm from Canadian fans for this tournament as a whole is quite telling.

For many here, this tournament without the best players is difficult to get up for so josh Ho-Sang is on the table.

Very lean times for international hockey in our estimation, the olympic brand alone doesn't change that for a lot of fans here.

Anyone hear who has the leg up on starting in net for Canada?

Question is who's the nr.2. Eddie Pasquale is by far the most experienced of the trio and an established top goalie in the KHL. The starters net is his to lose. I'm sure they'll rotate though so there should be playing time available for the nr.2. I could see Colliton give Levi a game just so see what he can do and reassess the situation afterwards.

He does have a great toolbox...

I think he has a great tourney for Canada and makes his way to the NHL.

It's also possible he busts and is the next Rob Schremp (whom I really liked).

I'm cheering for him to be honest and hope he has a great tourney!

Definitely true.. also, in Ontario, the games are at 3:30am. Only nutjobs like me are setting alarms and going to work! The second most likely time is 8am when most are going to work.

it's one of the reasons I'm cheering for Canada in this one... nothing favors them and I hope they rise up! They lost their developmental league (AHL), a dream team and all the games are at times when fans can't even casually watch.

Rob Schremp couldn't skate and his effort level was questioned by several coaches along the way. He also didn't always seem to be in great shape and had mental issues as well. The talent was there but the rest wasn't.

I'm not sure if Ho-Sang has similar issues but I haven't heard of it. He's certainly a much better skater than Schremp and if he sticks with Staal and McTavish, he'll score a lot of points in that olympic tournament.

Isn’t Canada still the second favored team according to bookies? Not like any of the other big deals didn’t take a huge demotion with the lack of NHL participation. Also in their favor is that it’s played on small ice and most of the roster has more NA experience than European (I think, just from name recognition).

Yes the team is frankly not all that interesting to talk about pre tournament as most of these guys will never play for Canada again in another tournament. I’ll catch all their highlights and still think they’re at least the very slight favorite in almost any matchup except against ROC.

Well. If my math is right, only 7 players on the Canadian roster (plus goalie Levi) are currently playing club hockey on smaller ice. Everybody else is earning money in Europe and most of them have done so for years. Therefore I'd question how much of an advantage the smaller ice really is. Certainly gonna help the expected top line of McTavish, Staal and Ho-Sang. Wotherspoon and Power could also be among the more important defenders on the team. Still.

Canada still does have a respectable team though. Eric Staal will be among the top Centers of the tournament and Eddie Pasquale among the top goalies. The rest of the team is well balanced with elite skill and size/experience/two way/stay at home players. The question is how quickly they can develop some chemistry as most of the players have never played together. Many don't even know anybody on the team personally. That's certainly different for the other teams, especially China which is essentially just gonna use the Kunlun Redstar roster. The biggest plus for Canada I think will be coaching. Colliton may not be as good as Julien but he's still significantly better than almost all other coaches at the Olympics.

The odds I saw had Canada 4th.

Odds to Win the Gold Medal

ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) + 150
Finland + 450
Sweden + 550
Canada + 700
Czech Republic + 900
Switzerland + 1400
USA + 1600

Any updates on who is expected to play in net? Hoping to watch Levi play after missing him at the beanpot last night.

Im not sure Eric Staal is good enough to be a top liner, much prefer him as a bottom 6. Would've given Kent Johnson a go there.

Can they make changes mid tournament if a player is healthy but underperforming or is the taxi squad just for injuries / COVID?

Johnson didnt even play center at the WJC. These are the best pros not in the NHL Canada would be the best KHL team in the league, its better hockey than people understand.

I am looking forward to the games thanks for posting the lines. I like what I am seeing, the first line looks exciting. Disappointing to see Levi as the 3rd guy.

Levi could well be the 2nd goalie. That was just a guess of mine. Obviously it's Pasquale's net to lose though.
