Olympics: Team Canada 2022, Part III

Are we playing China again at the next phase? I guess it’s more or less as good as a bye, maybe even better with the extra shooting practice

It would be like when we win the World Championships.

It’s fun for the rest of the day and then we forget about it.
For the record NyQuil.. I'm still celebrating the Czech 2010 victory and speak of it often!lol

Just one thing I wanted to mention. A lot of the HFposters on here are usually NHL fans who watch the Jr's. That is their entire knowledge base.

So when I read stuff like 'send the entire Canadian Jr team' to the Olympics against Pro's I get annoyed.lol

From what I saw in our game at the Juniors... McTavish and Power were MILES ahead of the Czech team and easily looked like 2 of the best players in the tourney! Well, they're here surrounded by pro's and lost to a NCAA US team.

I hope people aren't thinking if we replaced all the pro's on this team with Jr players that Canada would do better at this tourney?

Power (1OV), Johnson (5OV) and McTavish (3OV) are all going to be amazing NHL players and are elite but still teenagers. Not many teenagers dominating here. Slafkofsky and these 3. Not sure if McTavish has a point yet and he had 5 in 2 games at the Juniors.

Just a talking point. Curious what people think?

For the record, I think Canada has a perfect draw to get to the Gold Medal game. Only 2 nations I had as favs against you were Finn's and Russians and they are on a collision course in the other bracket. Good luck! I like your chances to upgrade the bronze from the last non NHL Olympics.

The Czechs won everything for awhile in that late 90s early 2000s.

It was an impressive run!
Yes, I'm still celebrating that too... but do NOT call it the Hasek years! He only played in one of those 6 gold tournaments!

The goalie might have had more to do with it. Speaking of, the NCAA goalie they didn't dress might have won them the game.

1. TC 1st line and 2nd lines need to get much better. If this means taking Eric Staal off the top 6, please do it asap, he does not look like he has a lot juice left at 37 for top 6 roles. He looks slow and took 2 really bad penalties during the USA game. The 2nd penalty just costed TC some momentum.

2. Pasquale did not play well against USA at all, allowing 2 bad goals and a questionable one.

3. TC needs to bring some younger blood to induce team speed and scoring. Max Veronneau, at 26 years of age (hockey players' prime time) , scoring leader in SHL, should be on this team. TC can easily take Adam Cracknell off the line up and replace him with Veronneau.

4. TC need to mix up the top 6 forwards for better chemistry.

Why do they keep putting Staal on the first line? I just don't understand it. They took McTavish off of it in the first game and now Ho-Sang off of it the third game.

Ho-Sang looked great out there and dangerous. Nothing against Staal but does management know what year it is?

I think its a young mans game. I wouldn't take an entire team of world jrs but I'd take a lot more youth than they did.

Overagers like McBain, Ho-Sang, Levi, Knight, Staal, O'Dell are guys i'd be fine with. But when you have so many vets that you're relying on Staal to be a first liner, you should probably look else where for scoring.

Personally, I've seen better guys in the OHL than some of the players that Canada have out there. Maybe theres better vets that didn't get an invite but based on what I'm seeing, its hard to see why Canada picked someone like Barberio when theres a handful of better guys in Junior / NCAA that would probably be better.

Experience counts. World champs 2021 the kids were panicking in the deciding games and the veterans, regardless of talent level were the ones who took home the gold for Canada.

The talent gap level between Mangiapane and Staal or Henrique and Winnik or Mario Ferraro and Barberio is night and day. I’d be fine with relying on GOOD veterans like the ones Canada had in the World Championships and playing them in a spot to succeed but most of Canada’s lineup is kind of a mess. You have a fourth liner like Staal on the top power play unit struggling to get anything going. Meanwhile Kent Johnson could easily be the best player in the tournament if he was given the same opportunities. Then in net they could’ve played Levi who is having an incredible season and has played great for Canada in the past but instead they went with a terrible goalie who let in 3-4 soft goals when it mattered.

I dearly hope Canada switched things up for the rest of the way because Sweden will be very difficult to beat as they have a fantastic goalie.

I guess they didn't bother to change the scoring on the last Canada goal. I think Tambellini should have one less assist and Staal should have one more assist not that it matters much.
Tambellini has been great this tournament and Weal has been pretty good as well.

I think the Staal line looked much better in the second game against China. Hopefully they continue that momentum against Sweden and capitalize on their chances. Also Canada needs to stop taking dumb penalties. That 5 minute major would have cost them big time against a better team.

Staal line only looked good during the power play which they had plenty of thanks to stupid penalties china was taking, and it was against a Chinese PK which dressed a echl goalie. 5 on 5, his line wasn't really there, and actually Josh Ho sang, and Johnson looked better than him. Heck even McTavish looked pretty good.

We need to stop giving veteran veteran treatments. This costed us in 98 and in 2006. We prioritized older players over younger players.

Well...

IF I am going to get up in 6.25 hours, and that is a BIG "IF", I better get to bed. So glad Slovakia won. Also glad Canada's women will likely make the playoffs in Curling.

Now, we just need the Women to win in Hockey.
