I don't see why so many people consider Theodore a lock? He should be in the same conversation with every single other LD up for debate (Toews, Pelech, Rielly, Weegar,Nurse, etc). Heres what I think at the moment.

Huberdeau-McDavid-MacKinnon
Marchand-Crosby-Bergeron
O'Reilly-Point-Stamkos
Tavares-Scheifele-Marner
Couturier-Stone

Theodore-Pieterangelo
Toews-Makar
Nurse-Ekblad
Rielly-Doughty

Price
Binnington
Fleury
Since the 2018/19 seasons Canadas top 3 snipers have been in order McD/Stamer/JT and you have 2 of them on our 3rd/4th lines?
you have Canadas super selke winger in the press box?

Just trying to give you a heads up, look if the best player on the planet asks for management to take a look at it and IF he is on the long list, welllll.

Sid gets what Sid wants,, that will apply to McD also

I get that, and that may be the case. Selecting Hyman would, however, contradict Armstrong's public statements about forming a team with players with either a strong playoff history or representing Canada at the Worlds (preferably both).

Possibly, but other countries have been appealing for/trying for guys who were not on their long lists to make the Olympic final roster. It seems like there may be some wiggle room with these lists, in which case I think Kadri deserves strong consideration for this team.

Possibly. I hadn't heard that (and makes me question the purpose of submitting a list in the first place if you can select players who aren't on it). Kadri would be an interesting choice. Its generally preferable to select players who are having good seasons, but like Wilson he's at a higher risk of not playing to his potential within the boundaries set by international/IIHF refereeing.

On the other hand if 34 year old Roy and Brodeur had the offensive muscle this team is going to have( at least on paper) , they most likely would have won. We are talking about very different teams when we are talking about this version of TC versus the 98 and 2006 versions.
WHY?

in 98 and 2006 we all thought we had elite offence then too.

can you post any metrics to back up the notion the Rielly is so bad at defending?

i'm being honest i can find those stats.
He’s been better this year to some extent, I still wouldn’t want him though as I prefer a left side with Toews, Theodore, and Ekblad moved over. Last year he was second in the league in turnovers, last year obviously but it’s a relevant statistic

I don't see the point in taking Hamilton at this juncture. He has the same issues that have been discussed so many times and the offensive right side offensive spots already look good. Ekblad coming back strong from his injury and Doughty playing well this year really kill his chances I imagine, and Makar has the top offensive spot locked up. There are steadier options available.

I like Cirelli and I remember reading that he was apparently on the long list. Seems like a B team forward but there should be better options for checking line centre or extra players on the main team. I really liked his WJC performance and would like to see him again internationally.
you only named 3 right shots,,they could take conceivably 5/6 of them

Stamkos McDavid Point
Huberdeau/Tavares Mackinnon Marner
Marchand Crosby Bergeron
Couturier O'Reilly Stone
Huberdeau/Tavares
Scheifele

Ekblad - Doughty
Theodore - Pietrangelo
Toews - Makar
Pelech
Rielly

WHY?

in 98 and 2006 we all thought we had elite offence then too.
Not in 98 we didn't, and especially when Kariya and Sakic went down. That was a down time for offensive stars for Canada, at least for our standards.

In 2006 it was quite good on paper but nowhere near what this Team has. There was still a lot of role/grit guys on that 2006 team like Draper , Doan and Smyth. Far more offensively talented roster on this version of Team Canada, I mean, Crosby will centre what to many observers think will be our 3rd line. Speaking of Crosby and 2006 team offensive power.............what a mistake it was leaving him off that year, he would have easily been our best player and offensive weapon.

No, both 98 and 06 were not roll you over offensive juggernauts, especially 98.

Olympic boycotts are just sabre rattling exercises that only really impact the athletes. Not as much in the case of the hockey players, but for the other athletes who in many cases get one chance every four years to be showcased on a large scale it's a shitty price to pay to lose your opportunity because some of the politicians decided last minute to publicly and ineffectively frown at China. I've got no interest in the theatre of Olympic boycotts. If Western countries want to begin a process of disengaging from China ad actually having an impact then I will support that, but unlike Olympic boycotts there is actually a price to be paid there. It's also extremely unlikely to happen, so empty gestures it will be.

All that to say, I hope hat the Olympic hockey tournament goes off without issue and with NHL players present.
We are ALL massive hypocrites on that front mate.
We all endlessly buy "made in China"(without ANY thought EVER) a nation that pollutes like no other and human right??what rights?
Till we kick them where it really hurts ,then all the rest is just BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.

That first line of his is really awful, honestly. And the forward group as a whole makes poor use of complementary skills and pre-existing chemistry.

I agree that Wilson makes more sense than Hyman. By his own explanation (and Armstrong's), Wilson is battle tested, Hyman isn't. Hyman has never been out of the 1st round of the playoffs, and has never played for Team Canada at any level.

I also don't like Morrissey or Nurse playing above Ekblad on defence, but whatever.
Ya? and how many less clicks does he get if he does not make the list a little controversial?

I'm surprised how many people are forgetting about Scheifele. He's 6th in scoring over the past 3 seasons among Canadians. He also showed at the World Championship of Hockey (or whatever that weird one-off NHL tournament was called) that he could play wing beside McDavid and complement him really nicely. After a slow start coming off covid he has 8 points in his last 4 games.

I'd easily take him over Tavares and Mangiapane (nevermind guys like Wilson and Hyman that aren't worth consideration).

Does anyone know when they'll announce the team?

I mean, Wilson has never played in a World Championship

(I personally wouldn't mind him on the team - big fan of his - but not at the expense of a highly skilled player such as Marner)
Nope,,,, sorry man,,,,, i can't,,,, i just can't . He could go "off" and do something dumb as hell , when the heat turns to a boil.

Wison=pass

Easily over JT?? please, just stop with the nonsense ,FYI i have Scheif on my roster tho.

keep athletes that have spent over half their lives training for this one opportunity home isn't the answer

Seriously. These athletes could care less where the games are being held, they just want to be able to compete on the highest stage in the sport they've made sacrifices daily to succeed at. Doesn't matter if it's in the US, China, Antarctica, whatever.

They should not be penalized for a decision a group of the beaurocrats at the IOC made years ago on where to host the games, because a group of politicians does not agree with it now. If you personally have a problem where the games are held, use your wallet and your votes to make it known. Don't campaign to ruin some 25 year old kid's lifelong dream to get your point across.

And I'm with this guy about Scheifele being considered (although not over JT), I think he has more of a right to make the team than someone like Couturier.

His turnovers sucked because our coach was running a childish reg season system of free wheeling/run n gun. New coach sucking up to the kids that got the last coach fired on purpose.
The same kind of hockey that keeps getting us booted in the 1rst rounds.

This year, our system is FINALLY PO hockey and now look at his numbers mate.

what???? you are putting our best 2 way PURE winger on the 4th line?
Look i have been a diehard leafs fan since 72, BUT!!
I'm a bigger team Canada fan, i don't want our big game "choker"(marner) anywhere top 6 minutes. His PO resume has not earned him that shot.

NOW, you want to talk about 2 recent big game warriors, Stammer/Point ,i want those 2 studs with our biggest gun (McJesus)

McKin is a big horse that FULLY utilizes his wingers , i want our best 2 pure wingers with him , for me that's March/Hub/Stone/Marner in that order , March will be with Sid,,,,so that leaves Hub/McKin/Stone,,,wooof

Ummmm....yeah.....uhhh.....I'd put Marner with McDavid. "choker"??? sure.

****Checks Stone's playoff stats and reviews Conference finals from last year**** uhhhhh....."choker" as well. Not much of a playoff resume for Stone either.

I could see Stammer - McDavid - Point and Hubs - MacK - Marner as well. Stone belongs on our 4th line

"checks last seasons OPENING ROUND" against your world class garbage team (habs) , Marner ended up cry in the Pen box as the series is lost. Best as i can add it up ,Marner is not even going to make this roster and this is coming from a leafs fan

Sweden was appealing for a kid they left off their long list, and of course Russia is appealing for Kuznetsov (who has a doping ban and was left off their list). Haven’t checked out the latest on either of these appeals, but a couple of weeks ago they were still underway.

I would not be surprised at all if Marner is not selected. Armstrong was part of a management group that left Martin St. Louis completely off the 2010 team, and only named him to the 2014 team when Stamkos got injured. For argument's sake, I consider MSL and Marner to be somewhat similar...both are smaller but highly skilled playmaking-oriented wingers, with Marner being better defensively (and a good PKer) but St. Louis having arguably a better motor and obviously more playoff and international success. Canada likes to have big wingers that can shoot the puck, go hard to the net, and get in on the forecheck. Neither Marner nor St. Louis fit that mold, so looking at the team from that perspective....I don't know, but again I wouldn't surprised if Armstrong looks in a different direction.
