I made this team without being tied down to the the long list, so I put Jarry on the team.

I was always told Greeley was an idiot by people in Hockey I trust. Can't believe he was hyped up at one point. No wonder he's working for daily faceoff and not an NHL team right now. Wilson is a very dangerous player to bring to an international tournament.

Some real interesting selections here...

Taking both Hyman and Wilson sounds insane. I actually think Wilson makes more sense. Hyman is baffling to me. He also sucked in the playoffs for Toronto much like the oft-criticized Marner and any offensive increase this year has come from the PP which he won't be touching on team Canada.

We're going to have Bergeron, Marchand, Stone, Couturier, ROR, etc. We don't need defensive/PK specialists, we have guys elite at that who also bring skill ffs.

Wilson is the non-star guy I’d like to see make it.

With the tournament being on NHL ice, I think he could be a wrecking ball on the 4th line. Mangiapane is the other guy I think deserves a shot, but I wouldn’t be bent out of shape if he’s not selected.

Edit: On another note, I’d pass on Couturier. Great player, but just hasn’t been good enough this year. They can either go with him, or ROR as a defensive 4C role and I think I prefer O’Reilly.

Also don't see why adding Wilson should come at the expense of Marner. I'd slot Marner over Hyman.

They can do

Huberdeau-McDavid-MacKinnon
Stamkos-Point-Marner
Marchand-Crosby-Bergeron
O'Reilly-Couturier-Stone
Tavares, Wilson
I’m gonna be honest, even though I had like most had couturier in, kadri might have taken his spot. And in your lineup, I won’t be surprised to see marner out, Wilson in. Team Canada love there power forwards.

Huberdeau -
Bergeron-
Mangiapane-
Marchand
Will not be on Team Canada if they wants to win the gold 100%

Wilson isn't a controversial selection at all.

He's developed into a bonafide offensive threat and adds a psychological advantage to his team that the Twitter nerds simply will never understand.

Got up early in the morning to watch this one (GMT). Marchand and Bergeron if they weren’t already are complete locks. Go look at the plays at 7:30 and 8:00, between letting Pastrnak bully him in a puck battle to get a grade-A scoring chance and follow up, and screening his own goaltender on the winning goal (whilst failing to clear out the front of the net), I think it’s clear that Nurse has a tendency to make poor plays like that this year. Was also watching for Hyman, who was ok; stands in front of the net and makes a nuisance of himself, but I wouldn’t have him on my team.

Marchy and Bergeron are locks and will be centre by Crosby. IMO they are the perfect third pairing as they can absolutely shut down the opponents while also providing an offensive spark. I think the top three lines will all play pretty much equal minutes, itll be more like a 1A, 1B and 1C. The competition will determine the total time played.

Huburdeau - McDavid - Marner - speed and skill...Hubs the finisher
Stamkos - MacKinnon - Point - Stammer will be the finisher for this one
Marchand - Crosby - Bergeron - 200 foot line
RoR - Couts - Stone - heart and soul playing tough minutes
Tavares - Tavares can fill in anywhere....TC likes those kind of guys

Pietro - Theodore - these two are dynamite
Doughty - Makar - c'mon Doughty is still the man and Makar is solid...this pair is perfect
Ekblad - Hamilton - big tough D man
Chabot - experience needed

Price (he's wearing pads again!)
Binnington
Flower
- third rarely plays and this is a legacy choice + locker room presence

It’s really not though. Theodore, Weegar, Nurse, Pelech, Toews, and Chabot all have arguments to be ahead, and some guys on the right could move over. There’s far more chance he’s not on the team than he is at this point.
Weeger shoots right actually , but yes he may be that 1 D type i always miss when i pick my team, i always get 1 D wrong. FYI i have been making these kind of rosters since 1972 .

But Reilly won't be one of those mistakes. I had Reilly/JT and yes even Marner on the "they have to play their way onto the team"

Reilly and JT have easily punched their tickets,,Marner welllllll, given what we see this season and his back to back CRAP POs , i see him as a bubble boy ATM, FYI i'm a 50 season leafs fan.

what???? you are putting our best 2 way PURE winger on the 4th line?
Look i have been a diehard leafs fan since 72, BUT!!
I'm a bigger team Canada fan, i don't want our big game "choker"(marner) anywhere top 6 minutes. His PO resume has not earned him that shot.

NOW, you want to talk about 2 recent big game warriors, Stammer/Point ,i want those 2 studs with our biggest gun (McJesus)

McKin is a big horse that FULLY utilizes his wingers , i want our best 2 pure wingers with him , for me that's March/Hub/Stone/Marner in that order , March will be with Sid,,,,so that leaves Hub/McKin/Stone,,,wooof

All this discussion about forwards and d men will all be for not when our putrid goaltending gets lit up by the goal scoring prowess of the American forwards

This all seems to line up with what I've been seeing/thinking, but the thought of Hyman on an Olympic team is...concerning. If he does get selected, hopefully its as a spare forward. No other concerns with the list of "risers", and no surprises on the "fallers". Pelech might a slight surprise, but I still think the left side is totally up in the air at this point so its hard to write him off completely. I'd completely forgotten about Seguin and Horvat in the context of the Olympic team honestly.
Well,, Hyman is McDs guy now right? sooo gotta weigh that.
The falling list is missing one, Marner ,,, back to back CRAP big game playoffs and so far, a seriously ho hum season to try and rebut those facts.

Agree that they are not bringing grinders on this team.

Marner is much of a lock as any winger on this team. I know he started slow the first two weeks with Matthews out and the team shooting at 2% but not having him on the team would just be bizarre (reigning 1st team RW all-star, voted top ten Selke last year, around 30 goal, 95 point pace the last 17 games).

The only thing keeping him out of the lineup would be an injury.
and his inability to get ANYTHING DONE when it really matters

you know,,,, like the POs or a short knockout tourny against the absolute most elite teams he would ever face.
This team needs MEN , not children that cry in the penalty box.

I get that Hyman is playing with McDavid, but McDavid plays well with quite literally everybody. For McDavid, its not a situation like we've seen with Crosby where he struggled to find chemistry with his linemates resulting in Chris Kunitz making an Olympic roster. Like Kunitz, Hyman is simply not good enough to play at the Olympic level. Poor playoff showings (having never left the first round), no Team Canada representation at any level. Hard pass on Hyman. C Team player for me.

We match up well with the Americans everywhere else though. Big wildcard is Eichel. If he’s not 100% or is unable to go, then their 2C is Larkin, who wouldn’t even come close to making Canada. The Canadian C depth is a huge advantage.

I am starting to warm up to the idea of taking Kadri. He is at the top of his game and top 10 in league points. Most importantly, he is good defensively and very tough to play against. Wouldn’t mind him as an option for 13th forward spot if he keeps up his level of play.

I suspect he wasn't included on the long list back in October (who would have known he'd have the season he's having?), so probably not a realistic option. Someone can correct the record, if he was included on the long list.

Just trying to give you a heads up, look if the best player on the planet asks for management to take a look at it and IF he is on the long list, welllll.

Sid gets what Sid wants,, that will apply to McD also

Possibly, but other countries have been appealing for/trying for guys who were not on their long lists to make the Olympic final roster. It seems like there may be some wiggle room with these lists, in which case I think Kadri deserves strong consideration for this team.

I didn’t say they didn’t have good responsible defensemen, I just said that had a high percentage of those who are iffy when it comes to defending; however if the management team gets it wrong and brings players like Nurse, Chabot, Rielly etc I would definitely say that negates the Canadian advantage
can you post any metrics to back up the notion the Rielly is so bad at defending?

i'm being honest i can find those stats.

I'm not so sure regarding the interchangeability of those guys. Even in 2010 Toews started as 13th forward and ended up named the tournament's best forward. Tonelli was once the MVP of a Canada Cup. People are still talking about how Canada filled out the depth spots in 2006. Obviously it doesn't always go that way but Canada's biggest advantage is that the competition for those depth spots is way more harsh than it is anywhere else. Getting the right players is important even if we can't know how a non-selected player would perform.

Canada's goaltending is something that should be looked into regardless of what happens in this or any other tournament. There is no reason that Canada should be clearly behind other countries in goaltending, simple as that. Being able to put out a solid goaltender for the WJC most years and produce guys who can flash elite play n the NHL every few years isn't enough.
HC has to look into this,,, we need more subsidy's specifically for family's trying to raise a "elite" lvl tender up the ranks and years.
Funding a tender thro the elite lvls of hockey is REDONCULOUSLY $$$$$$ and the family's risk/reward is the ABSOLUTE worst
since there are only 64 of them in the bigs at one time. compared to 416 forwards and 224 D.
