They all have Morrissey as well, which is crazy to me. He's a good player, but definitely not a consensus to be on the team.
Yeah and I was so blinded by Nurse and Reilly being included I didn’t even notice they left out Ekblad, who is a top Norris candidate at the moment….. thankfully the TSN panel isn’t picking the team

Ya Ekblad should definietly be a lock.

On HNIC tonite the despicable Ron MacLean stated that Olympic hockey with NHL players may not happen. I checked with the Google and sure enough his network's competitor has the rights.

Though he probably won’t make the 2022 team, games like the one Kristopher Létang are playing tonight make me wonder why he never made the early to mid 2010s Team Canada editions, some player

Not really the appropriate thread for this topic but I think it’s really understated how much of a what-if Letang is. If not for so many injury + Covid shorted seasons, he’d be a sure-fire hall of famer based on numbers and skill. Likely would have a few high Norris finishes and I think would’ve made Canada’s 2014 team. So many seasons he was pacing for 65+ points that were cut short.

Didn’t catch any Sens games this year, so that makes me a poor judge at the moment. I’m wondering though, is Chabot struggling that bad to lose his spot to Toews and Weegar? They are quality players too, obviously, but I would have picked Chabot without any second thoughts not so long ago.

The NHL has said they might not go if they need to delay too many games because of COVID, requiring them to use the Olympic break to make them up. Fortunately there's only been a few postponed games so far, but it's not 100% that they are going just yet.

If Letang was perfectly healthy in 2013 and 2014 he very likely wins the 2013 Norris and then ends up on the 2014 team. He was fairly replaceable for Canada though.

I would guess that Chabot is on the outside looking in right now. He's stretched pretty thin in Ottawa. I'd like to see what he could do on a more structured team with fewer minutes each game as that's much closer to what Canada should be like. I do think that he is a good fit for international hockey even if he isn't the safest option Canada has for a depth LHD spot.

Team Canada historically will not put a young offensive blue liner with limited defensive skills. Not saying chabot is a defensive nightmare, but chabot doesn’t fit the mold. Team Canada typically name guys like weegar, toews and peleech. It’s just the way it is. In a one game elimination, you have to have players, especially d men, to be really effin good defensively.

Historically, Canada want d men that are safe bets defensively.

No chance he's losing his spot to those two.

Chabot is the true definition of a stud two way dman. He plays in all situations and he's the only reason on d we aren't getting blown out each game.

Hes getting way over played as usual and against top competition.

Hes as dominant as he was when you saw him at the WJHC a few years ago. Just needs less ice time in the NHL.

Hyman has been discussed at length, but for another sleeper from the Oilers, when does RNH start receiving consideration? 19 points in 15 games but 18 of them are assists (lol). I wouldn't have him on the team of course but I think he's being slept on a bit. Only major difference with him and Hyman is that Hyman plays a style that's in shorter supply for this Olympic team. Otherwise RNH has just as strong if not a stronger case.
Hes quite reliable defensively isnt he? Could fill that Bergeron type role on a lower line. Doubt he makes it but would not be questioning it at all if he did

Yup. Great PKer as well. Not a great face-off man though and these days is more a LW than a C.

I’d take Toews over Chabot.

I think he’s just been a better player from last season and into this year. Not to mention they can just play him next to Makar and keep that chemistry.

The left side of the defence will be interesting to follow. Theadore is really the only guy that is probably close to a lock. Lots of guys still in the mix.

Mangiapane has to at least be considered somewhat strongly at this point, at least to be one of the extra two forwards, given the season he's having, added to his tournament MVP in the tournament earlier, he might not be the most "all star name" player, but he's at least had to have played his way into consideration I think.

If I had to pick a dark horse player to make it, it would be mangiapane. Team Canada doesn’t have a lot of great goal scoring wingers. And like this poster outlined, his mvp at the worlds leading Canada to victory is a definite plus when deliberation is given.

We both know that Makar is the one that stirs the drink with that defense pair. Toews is a great player but there are better dmen available

Arguing for Toews to be on Team Canada over much better players is as ridiculous as Oilers fans arguing for Hymen.

It's funny because the stats indicate that Toews performs almost identically with or without Makar on his pairing. This season and last season combined, Toews posts almost identical cf, sf, xg, etc rates with or without Makar.

I get you want Chabot on the team, and he'd be a fair choice, but I don't think you need to pretend Toews is some kind of passenger to Makar's brilliance.

I'd go so far as to say if Toews and Makar both make Team Canada, Toews will have the higher TOI. He's a player coaches absolutely love.

Toews for me is competing for the same spot as Weegar and Pelech, I don’t think Chabot is in direct competition with him. Of those 3 at the moment I take Toews.

Chabot is more in competition for some sort of 7th/power play défenseman role at the moment, and at this point I would rather have that be Dougie Hamilton or Bowen Byram (if healthy)

Byram isn’t making team Canada this year. Just isn’t going to happen. There are MANY guys ahead of him that are better.

In Italy, yeah he’ll have a chance but right now I just don’t see it.

I don't think Chabot ever had a spot sewed up. He is one of many in contention.

Well, of course Makar is better, but Toews is still excellent.

I don’t see what Chabot’s done to be considered ahead of Toews. I think both guys will be in the mix.

Canada in discussions with 'closest partners' on possible Olympic boycott
Is this real and serious boycott rumor or only clickbait bullshit speculation without any truth?

I think it's very possible there is a diplomatic boycott. Athletes would still be able to go but no official government delegations (in particular high ranking) from the countries considering going this route. It's probably just window dressing but would lessen the overall prestige of the games. China will downplay it and lash out in turn.
