I'd qualify that by saying that its not a prohibitively expensive sport to play and enjoy (meaning that the large majority of kids that have an interest in playing hockey, probably can), but it is most likely a prohibitively expensive sport to advance in/excel at, relative to your peer group. Its not overly expensive to pick up used equipment and register for house/rec league hockey, and take the kid to a few weekly practices and games. My son isn't old enough yet to play hockey, but some of my friends and dads in the neighbourhood have their kids in house league hockey and say that's the case. I think where the true cost barriers come into play are when your kids are good enough or have a desire to play on more competitive teams - the travel (time off work + travel costs), the extra training and camps, newer equipment, etc. Particularly if you're living in a large city/suburban area. Its likely a lot cheaper in more rural areas, but then there is a problem of exposure, proper coaching, commute times, etc.
