Also, immigration has exploded, there are a lot more East Indians, Philippinos, Chinese, Japanese etc people who have come to Canada in the last 20 years, I don’t see those nationalities spending thousands on hockey equipment and enrolment lol.
Yeah but it’s not like population of groups more likely to play hockey (multi-generation Canadians, Eastern European immigrants) has dropped off so I don’t think it’s that

Do you have any proof of this claim, or are you pulling it out of your ass?

I know the government has tried to encourage hockey enrollment in the Black community. The problem is, of course, hockey is expensive.

I have NO problem with the Canadian government funding programs that encourage young People Of Colour to play hockey. In fact, I encourage it..

If there was one player I could see being motivated the most to make the Olympic team, it’s doughty.
I agree and would love to see him on the team for a few reasons :

1) His experience - I can't believe he'll be 32.
2) He has a second gear when games are important.
3) I like him as a player.

Without getting too off track I think the efforts to make hockey more accessible are often impeded by financial barriers, not ethnographic ones, at least in my experience having played youth hockey fairly recently; it is a very expensive sport

I'd qualify that by saying that its not a prohibitively expensive sport to play and enjoy (meaning that the large majority of kids that have an interest in playing hockey, probably can), but it is most likely a prohibitively expensive sport to advance in/excel at, relative to your peer group. Its not overly expensive to pick up used equipment and register for house/rec league hockey, and take the kid to a few weekly practices and games. My son isn't old enough yet to play hockey, but some of my friends and dads in the neighbourhood have their kids in house league hockey and say that's the case. I think where the true cost barriers come into play are when your kids are good enough or have a desire to play on more competitive teams - the travel (time off work + travel costs), the extra training and camps, newer equipment, etc. Particularly if you're living in a large city/suburban area. Its likely a lot cheaper in more rural areas, but then there is a problem of exposure, proper coaching, commute times, etc.

Cool. I'm happy to see the government step in and help in both areas.

IginlaFan77,

We have a pretty good group of people in this thread / forum. Some posters we like, some we don't, but we're respectful - or I like to think we are.

Please don't act like a bully. Thanks!

I don't think it's appropriate to make a baseless claim essentially blaming non-white immigrants for not playing hockey

Doughty looked absolutely incredible last night and seems primed to have a monster season on a revitalized Kings team. If he’s engaged, adding another Norris-caliber player is pretty nice.

LHD: Chabot, Chychrun, Pelech, Theodore, Byram?

RHD: Makar, Ekblad, Letang, Pietrangelo, Doughty.

Chychrun-Makar
Theodore-Pietrangelo
Doughty-Ekblad

I can only speak from my experience having played youth and some junior in both Canada and the United States but in my opinion the real “stars” won’t fall through the cracks even if their families can’t afford it, they’ll often have their registration or other fees paid for if they are good enough. The issue becomes that this is a model that leaves no room for late bloomers, for instance if the David Perrons and Claude Girouxs (perhaps the most famous example is Samuel Blais) of the world couldn’t pay the fees, due to their status of not being “stars” at a certain age they most certainly would have not been able to play AAA/Prep due to cost

Big no on Létang but apart from that it’s a fairly realistic list

Why’s that? Obviously, I don’t project him to make the lineup, but he’s right there. Letang has been an incredible two-way rock for years for the Pens, and was probably their best player last year.
Has been a disaster in defensive decision making with and without the puck in his last two playoff series against NYI and Montréal, I admit to not having watched a great deal of penguins regular season games (apart from last night) but in those two series he was very lacklustre

Come on guys, Doughty is an absolute lock. Does anyone really think Armstrong will take Dougie Hamilton over him?

Theodore / Pietrangelo
Pelech / Makar
Chycrun / Doughty
Ekblad, Chabot

I'm very interested in seeing how Ekblad does to start the year. He looked decent last night, which is nice coming off that injury, and time will tell more. Nice to have a big all around defenceman on the right side potentially.
He's been up and down his whole career, right? I don't see him enough to know.

I remember him impressing out of the gate but, and maybe it was because he was injured, he lost his luster and became an after thought for any Olympic talk.

Just based on stats, his 3rd season wasn't good. The rest of the years look strong.

Early so perhaps no need for panic but Chychrun looked awful against Columbus, poor step ups, losing stick battles in front of the net, slowing tracking back to the front of the net in the defensive zone; for someone who I though only Makar and Theodore had better seasons then last year this is certainly an unwelcome development

It's only been one game, not exactly a development. Chychrun is one of the many guys who are likely in contention. If he takes a step back there will very likely be a left side option who takes a step forward. I was reading Duhatschek's projected roster on theathletic yesterday and he has Chychrun in the "next five" group of defencemen just outside the top eight. He included Morrissey, who I haven't seen included all that often in the last year plus.

How many forwards are we taking? If it's 14 these would be mine assuming no injuries:

McDavid
Crosby
MacKinnon
Point
Marchand
Bergeron
O'Reilly
Stone
Huberdeau
Barzal
Couturier
Scheifele
Stamkos
Tavares

Notable absence: MARNER. DO NOT WANT DO NOT NEED.
