the only thing I can come up with concerning the lack of good Canadian nhl goalies is the cost to play goalie as a kid growing up. In the 1980’s and 90’s the cost of living was ALOT cheaper. People could afford to have there kid play goalie and fork out the costs. Who the hell can afford to put there kid in hockey as a goalie now, people are incurring debt in this country like nothing before.
Yes but the high costs are everywhere - not just Canada.

Again, just from a statistical / law of averages point of view, you'd think we fall into a great goalie every 3 or 4 years but it's been a LONG time.

As a Leaf fan, I know the pain Marner can cause.

Marner has 7 minor penalties in his playoff career and 6 are puck over the glass so... Leave his ass home.

Just gonna say it doesn't look good when you cant get the number of penalties right (Marner only has 6 minors in his playoff career), all of which were killed by the Leafs anyways.

Marner hasnt had amazing production but still has more pts. per game in the playoffs the last 5 years than:

Barzal
Hedman
Kessel
Matthews
Krejci
Benn
Burns
Nylander
Stone
Karlsson
Laine
Hall
Connor
Seguin

and a ton of other top flight players.

He's 36th in points/GP in the playoffs out of 1000+ players since his rookie year.

Not quite up to his top 20 points/GP in the regular season over that time but you may be being little harsh on the kid.

Bringing Marner will cost Canada. Leave him home.

How many penalties has Marner taken in the playoffs?

Cmon, say it! :P
In my defense, I stole the quote from someone else. :)

Still... 6 penalties and 5 were over the glass and 1 was tripping. Not good. If I was choosing, Marner would not be on my team. If he is, it will come back to haunt Canada.

I would theorize that because Québec invented (or at least made popular) the butterfly style, we had an advantage over other countries for a long time since the 70s, but as this style has become the main style (I know reverse V/H has become more popular recently) that advantage has evaporated; even within Canada, we could theoretically have a national team without a Québec goalie for the first time since the 80s if Fleury doesn’t make it. I would also say that the importation of starting goalies in the CHL has hurt as well, thought that situation seems to have been rectified

I hate the that Canada is in the same group as China. The fact that they have to play a weak team right before the quarterfinals is a real challenge.

I'm surprised you would make that much. Canadas Z team would beat China.
True.

I just remembered in the 2014 Olympics (and I might be misremembering), Canada vs Austria, paid 10%. You put down $10,000 and, if Canada won, you got $11,000 back (winning $1,000) - minus fees.

I assumed China would pay less. How much less, I don't know. $300 was just a number I threw out there.

Stamkos making an early season statement.

Maybe we should put Tyler Bertuzzi on the wing?
He's got those Bertuzzi "good looks".
I'd prefer Bertuzzi to you-know-who.

Bertuzzi wont make the team… One game doesn't change anything - Not even going to mention his vaccination situation…..

Ekblad looked fully recovered last night,. Létang is still a train wreck in his own zone and should not be considered

I'm very interested in seeing how Ekblad does to start the year. He looked decent last night, which is nice coming off that injury, and time will tell more. Nice to have a big all around defenceman on the right side potentially.

Median family wealth in Canada has also exploded since then.
I think it's probably fair to assume that that wealth isn't exactly evenly distributed - but there's still a lot of middle income Canadians who can afford to put their kids through hockey.

And while goalie gear is definitely an additional expense, it's meanwhile only one small piece of the pie. Elite level kids are already paying a ton to be on "travel" teams, attend specialty hockey schools, receive extra offseason / off-ice training, etc.. The cost of a new blocker or pads is drop in the bucket in comparison.

Also, immigration has exploded, there are a lot more East Indians, Philippinos, Chinese, Japanese etc people who have come to Canada in the last 20 years, I don’t see those nationalities spending thousands on hockey equipment and enrolment lol.
