No way Cirelli makes it. Not unless Canada has a whole slew of injuries to its better defensive forwards (ie. Bergeron, O'Reilly, Couturier, etc.).

It was just coach-speak where Cooper was propping up his own player.
lol fr I don’t care how many rings he has, no way he plays over oreilly, couts

Agreed, Parayko wouldn't be a poor selection; I wouldn't have him on my team (he'd be just outside), but certainly justifiable even if his own GM selected him for the reasons you mentioned.

Armstrong has mentioned previously that he would like the management team to "keep on eye on" Jordan Kyrou, which would be a huge concern obviously if that gets any traction. Kyrou is nowhere near good enough for our A team. Perron will likely get some consideration for a depth role, but I can't see how he surpasses the aging stars (Tavares, Stamkos) and all of the good young forwards that we have. If Perron ends up getting selected, I would definitely see that as nepotism on Armstrong's part. I don't think it will happen though.

I like Parayko as a right side option with great size and who can complement a left side puck mover without needing the puck. For some of the spots it should come down to how well players start the year. A Kyrou pick would be troubling but I'd be very surprised. Armstrong has other GMs with him, plus Hockey Canada and the coaches providing input. It would be pretty bold to make a pick with motivation that blatant.

I like Parayko, too.

If any of you needed PROOF that Marner should NOT be on Team Canada, assuming you needed proof after last year's playoffs, I hope you're watching tonight's Habs game.

Marner just took a penalty, during the PK, 180 feet from his own net. Thanks, Mitch!

Thankfully, the Leafs managed to kill off the 5 on 3. No Matthews and Marner's been as useless as tits on a bull.

Byram looked pretty good last night!

He did indeed. as did Drysdale. who looked even better. with those two + Power + Chabot and Makar...just give Team Canada the 2026 Olympic gold already.

on a more serious note, let's see how Bowen looks in game 42 before putting him on the '22 Olympic Team Canada.

Oh and in case anyone had any doubt Mark Stone is a lock 100%
I'd love to see him play with McDavid. Stone has good defensive awareness, is a puck thief, and knows to how to get into open space on the attack. All these are attributes that would compliment McDavid's style of play.

Who plays LW with those two? Huberdeau?

Yeah he played well with McDavid at the Russia world championships and I would have Stone on my first power play unit to play in front of the net; I have McDavid with Scheifele and Huberdeau but Stone could in theory take Scheifele’s spot

I'd definitely like to see Stone with McDavid. Someone who can provide defensive cover, do a lot of the dirty work, and then knock in some goals. I'd probably like a fast LW option if Stone is McDavid's RW.

We needed this influx of talent - especially on the back end. A bunch of weak drafts were coming back to haunt us.

Craig Button, not that I agree with him, compared him to Doughty in 2010. I doubt he makes the team given he’s not even top pairing in Colorado as Doughty was at the time in Los Angeles but it’s something to keep an eye on I suppose
We need some young superstars on the back end. We're getting them.

We need some young superstars to replace Sid and Toews. Hopefully, with Bedard and Wright, we're getting them.

The 2019 - 2023 drafts will provide a lot of depth up front.

Now, if we could just find a flipping goalie or 2.

The available LW options are probably not ideal for a McDavid/Stone pairing, imo. We're a bit shallow on the left side at the moment. Huberdeau would probably work best with McDavid and Stone. He's not a speedster but he's a good skater, and has the offensive wherewithal to hang with McDavid. Hard to say if that line would work. If the Crosby/McDavid pairing comes to fruition, Stone would probably work well with them too.

Personally, I like Point on McDavid's right side as he adds the skating element that Stone somewhat lacks, he's a little more versatile offensively and a better goal scorer, and can still provide an element of grit and defensive play (recognizing that he's not at Stone's level in that regard). And, he's a RHS so can take the draws on his strong side. Its' important in my mind that Point gets top-6 minutes, and I have him a little higher in my personal depth chart than Stone (and I don't think there's necessarily room for him at center).

If we know anything, its that the lines we go into the tournament with won't be the lines we'll end the tournament with.

Watched the Oilers / Canucks game last night. Mike Smith was terrific and I thought, "Even at 39, the old man's still got it. Maybe he could play in China."

Then Hughes put a knuckler by him from 40 feet (that I could have stopped) with 2 minutes left. Oy vey.

We crank out players like it's a bodily function and we can't produce a top end goalie in almost a decade? Makes absolutely no statistical / logical sense.

That's Mike Smith's career in a nutshell. He's either dominant or he's letting in "wtf was that" goals. Often times within the same game.

That's the exact type of goalie I don't want Canada having. I'd rather a guy who is just steady -- highs aren't as high, but lows aren't as low.

Marner is going to be on this team and I for one am going to find the reaction to that by a certain poster quite entertaining.
I'm glad.

Enjoy it until February when Marner costs us and the excuses start. I can hear it now...

"Marner's not the reason we lost - although, his puck over glass in overtime that led to the winning goal was unfortunate. It was team loss."

That's why I don't want Fleury to play. Canada generally needs a goaltender who is steady and won't cost the team a game, rather than a goaltender who might steal it for the team. It should be interesting to see who stands out after a few weeks. A few weeks of course, not who stands out after a single game or a single play.

Marner has never taken a penalty that has led to a goal against in the playoffs.
Marner also takes a well below average of minors in the playoffs compared to other players.

Why do you keep going on about it?

the only thing I can come up with concerning the lack of good Canadian nhl goalies is the cost to play goalie as a kid growing up. In the 1980’s and 90’s the cost of living was ALOT cheaper. People could afford to have there kid play goalie and fork out the costs. Who the hell can afford to put there kid in hockey as a goalie now, people are incurring debt in this country like nothing before.

As a Leaf fan, I know the pain that only Marner can cause.

Marner has 7 minor penalties in his playoff career and 6 are puck over the glass so... Leave his ass home.
