I'm willing to be patient for the Karlsson and Tarasenko news. Maybe Pittsburgh gets him, but I don't know, man. I'm pretty sure that Karlsson would prefer to go to a team like Carolina that is 100% in the Cup window rather than a club that is desperately trying to get out of a pickle that a prior regime got into. When NMCs are involved, trades become more about what the player is willing to approve rather than about the quality of return.

Yep. This is SJ's Jeff Skinner moment. The question is, which flavor of Pu will they take back?

SJ very well may have intentionally screwed with us on the Meier trade. At this point its very possible that they are stringing us along.

Imo they used us as a stalking horse on the Meier trade to get a bit more from NJ who they were giving the right of last refusal to because of the really close interpersonal relationships among the respective front offices. I really don't think they did it to screw the Canes, and would have no incentive to string us along this time. If there's anything weird going on I suspect it would be Waddell squeezing SJ in retribution if he knew the Canes were Karlsson's destination of choice.

could management be trying for a 3 way deal the 2 team could retain 50% of Karlsson salary and we have him at 2.850 000 , i dont mind getting rid of 2 players like suzuki ,nadeau and 2 first round picks to acheive this , i would keep pesce , trade chatfield for TDA Noeseen back to AHL where he belongs ,and of course have tarasenko signed somehow

I’m convinced there’s more than just Tarasenko brewing. And it’s probably just a Tarasenko signing, then a Pesce traded, but I would not be completely shocked if it was something much bigger.

I also wouldn’t be shocked if Tarasenko to CAR is announced in the next hour.

Strickland saying Tarasenko was close to a decision, then Pagnotta saying it was down to OTT and CAR, then the tweet from Shayna and pretty much confirms to me he’s coming.

Doesn't the max retention limit of 50% apply to the total contract amount? If it were ok to apply it to each of the 2 allowable retentions, that would result in 75% of the contract being retained.

edit: nope, it does apply to each allowing up to 75% total. thanks daveg

I feel as if the Canes want the trades, including the TDA one, to be announced before the Tarasenko signing is finalized. Canes lose significant trade leverage if they are over the cap. I would not be surprised if the Tarasenko signing is not announced until after July 9th.

I suppose all the wailing and gnashing of teeth about the lack of deadline moves this past year can be put to bed. When they say they build the team in the summer, they friggin mean it.
Why did we not go all in last season

Disagree...we might hold out on a trade until Tank happens, but I can't see a UFA holding out for someone else's domino's to fall into place. That could result in fewer suitors and/or less money, no reason to risk that if he's got a few other close offers

Ok No issue with most of wat you posted but Noesen had 36 points in the national last year, he doesnt belong in the AHL.

Why did we not go all in last season

Define "all in". Last season they did aggressively pursue a couple really big transactions but dropped out when the cost arguably "got stupid". This year it's reported that Orlov approached us and maybe brings Tank in tow? And Karlsson wants out of SJ but possible destinations being limited to strong Cup contenders with available cap space narrows the field considerably. Also, to me going all in kind of implies sacrificing future chances for the immediate. Even with the big moves that might still happen, I don't see the Canes doing that, arguably the opposite (in not giving Pesce and Skjei long term contracts that could hurt down the line).

tldr: Maybe it's more a matter of optimizing what's possible at the time than a change in philosophy?
