That lends some credibility to the speculation upthread that they’re going to finish a trade (Pesce?) first and then complete the Tank signing.
Could even be as straightforward as needing the TDA deal to go through in order to secure a cheap 3rd pair D to facilitate next steps

Maybe. They stretched a bit to get Orlov, in exchange for letting him get back to a cap-inflated market in only 2 years. They might be doing something similar here.
May as well - the window is basically 2 years with Slavin's deal being up then, right?

Not that the window will close, but Slavin will want a bigger bite, and Aho will of course be getting his raise next year. Jarvis ELC will be up as well, so there will be some money on that bridge. May as well go big for 2 years.

Canes management certainly knows better than I do, but he seems a bit redundant with Svechnikov.

Curious take.

Svechnikov plays the left side, Tarasenko the right.

The Canes have been starved for more pure goal scoring talent in recent years. Tarasenko is just that.

The Canes are the one of, if not the best, defensive teams in the NHL. They have players to make up for any deficiencies Tarasenko may have defensively.

If this comes to fruition, they don’t have to trade anything for him, just cap space. They would still have an ample amount of futures to bolster the team come trade deadline.

Orlov and Tarasenko seem to be best buds.

Seems to make perfect sense to me.

That’s the gist of it. They’ll try and keep the band together, but there’s a reason they’re so loaded up on draft picks and prospects. The current core will be in maximum-salary mode after ‘25.

It makes sense for them to shoot their shot with guys like Orlov/Tank/TDA/Burns all on contracts that expire around 2025, then strip those guys away as the major contract renewals come on line. Then backfill the roster with prospects (Nikishin) who theoretically should be ready to step into some of those roles. Or, if that doesn’t work out, use the picks and prospects as trade chips. Either way, the roster likely looks very different by 2026 even if they keep the core together.

All of which is why they were so dumb to punt on TDL this past season. If they had added a scorer they would have been eastern conference champs and had real shot against Vegas. But they thought they were smarter than everyone else so they didn’t do anything and lost to inferior club.

1) They got Halak’d. It happens. Not even the first time that Bobrovsky has done that to a team.

2) They didn’t punt on the TDL. They were the runner-up in the Meier sweepstakes, and before that they were the runner-up for Tkachuk. Only one team can win those races, just as only one team can win the Cup. When SJ decided to go with the NJ offer there wasn’t much left on the table worth giving up assets for.

3) If they had thrown away loads of assets and cap flexibility to get Meier, they wouldn’t be in a position to continue to shore up the roster. I would certainly rather have Orlov + Tarasenko + TDA + longterm flexibility than get Meier and lose other major assets in the trade.

Canes would be smart to do this, dont know why they haven't yet.

Hell, they could probably convince Kane to take a low salary deal and take his time with rehab. They're a playoff team as is so he wouldn't need to rush back and he'd be nice & fresh for the 2nd half.

Realistically, how much can Carolina offer him? Is their space going to dry up next year?

Tampa seems to be a very similar situation to Carolina and they were rumored to be interested as well. Tampa has somewhere around $2.5M to offer him this year, and will probably be able to increase that starting next year if its a multi year deal.

Today, they could offer him at least $4M, their current space under the cap.

After they reacquire DeAngelo and likely trade Pesce, they’d have $5M to offer him.

They could offer him $5M+ today and still be able to sign him with the ability to go over the cap by 10% in summer.

If he’s after the most amount of bank he can get while still playing for a contender, there’s essentially no way the Bolts could offer him more than the Canes could.

The thought is the Canes can offer around $5M this year. But the issue with the Canes is that it is likely only a one year deal as next year both Necas and Jarvis need new contracts (so do Aho and Pesce, but both of those seem to be being resolved in different ways at the moment). Our speculation is that the Canes offer is not a slam dunk because of the term offered.

What kind of term could Carolina offer? The Lightning have cost certainty moving forward and can afford to give length with performance bonuses that kick in after next year.
