The thought is the Canes can offer around $5M this year. But the issue with the Canes is that it is likely only a one year deal as next year both Necas and Jarvis need new contracts (so do Aho and Pesce, but both of those seem to be being resolved in different ways at the moment). Our speculation is that the Canes offer is not a slam dunk because of the term offered.
So the Bolts can probably offer him a long term deal of guaranteed money - much like they offered Killorn. They would do this knowing they will be eating the end of the deal in order to maximize their chances in the next few years.

So from what I gather, the scenarios are:

1) Canes on a one-year higher cap deal
2) Lightning on a multi year lower cap deal
3) Maybe Ottawa on a higher cap multi year deal?

Canes and Bolts give him the best roster and chance to win. Ottawa might have the most money. Is that accurate?

That is my understanding of his options.

Can’t recall this happening before, at least with a major free agent.

Well Klingberg last year. Well he thought he was a major free agent last year. Probably like Tarasenko thinks hes a major free agent this year.

I think hes a better player but I do remember Seravalli even saying before free agency started that it was pretty silent on Tarasenko. I dont think anyone wants to give him term similar to Klingberg last year.

Yeah one thing the Canes will not be doing is overcommitting. That is not how they roll. If this turns into his new agent team trying to play teams off each other for some big splash contract above market value, they will do it without Waddell involved.

Notably, Carolina is one of only 4 teams without a player represented by Pat Brisson, and their only player represented by JP Barry is just-drafted Griffin Mendel. The last time I recall Brisson’s name in relation to the Hurricanes was when he was working for a big multi-year extension for Tony DeAngelo, and the Canes ended up trading him instead.

Guys like Tarasenko and Kane probably think they're better than they are and want term, despite their clear decline in play and skating especially.

Even the average fan still think these guys are elite or something lol.

The Debrincat thing being reported by Strickland, could be connected due to his Blues connections. Tarasenko to Ottawa as they move on from Debrincat.

Pagnotta said there was talk of $3 mil - $4 mil on a 1 year deal. Perhaps he's not ready to stomach a prove-it deal on July 5th.

His market being soft isn't a surprise. He's a wing. He's post 30 and has had some injury concerns. 22-23 didn't help in making 21-22 not look like an outlier in his back nine.

This video was also posted before Friedman broke the agent news.

$3M-$4M on a 1 year deal is a very “Carolina” type of move. They love short-term deals for guys like TDA and Orlov who can fill a temporary need without causing long term flexibility issues.

But it doesn’t make sense for him to switch agents and take the same kind of contract that the first agent was working on. My guess is he’s been assured that the new agent team can land him a deal that’s both longer and larger.

That being the case, it isn’t a very “Carolina” situation anymore. I’d bet that the Canes angle is dead.

If Carolina can only offer 1x3-4M, then I agree they are out. Tampa can come close to that and offer term as well (most likely). Both teams are similar in chances to win and state taxes. A lot of big name Russians on Tampa too.

I think he probably goes to some team offering 5+ with term. Not sure who that would be though.
