NYR fan here. I come in peace. I know nothing about Niko outside of stats. Can you guys tell me about him? Is he a legit dman or just a throw in?

San Pedro, CA.
Wish we could’ve gotten a prospect back that was better than Skinner, especially with Blais being the roster player we received.

Glad we got another 1st though. Hopefully we can get at least one more.

Considering it’s basically an early second, it’s pretty pathetic that we couldn’t even get a halfway decent prospect. So we basically have Mikkola away for free.
There probably aren’t a lot of teams that would trade a first for Tarasenko. Getting a first, along with additional picks and Blais, while giving up Tarasenko and Mikkola is a win.

Very happy with this deal...as Blueston mentioned I was becoming skeptical that Tank would land a first. When it's all said and done after ROR/Barby are traded we're going to have a lot of ammunition at the draft to not only draft some good talent with the picks acquired but also potentially move up.

That's a good return. A 1st and a 3rd for Tank and Mikkola is what we wanted, getting Blais is ok depth I could do with or without. Solid work once again, Army.

He actually can be decent on a better team as the 3rd pairing defensemen. He really isn't that bad but when he was here he was being asked to do too much. But he does have poor puck skills and tends to rim it around the boards when under pressure or make bad passes. As long as he is just trying to defend you should be good

Let's be honest; Tarasenko hasn't been good this year. How many teams realistically would have dealt us 1st for him? Who else? I think lots of teams would have given us 2nd, but that is huge difference unless we got prime prospect with it. Which most don't want to do. So while this maybe ain't home run, it's more than good enough. And we lock it in before Rangers (who were always one of more likely to deal 1st because they had extra) looked elsewhere.

And Miko is awful so not having to watch him any more is added plus.

We gave away Mikkola for little to nothing. But getting a 1st+3rd for Tarasenko is pretty nice. I can't see Rangers falling out of the playoff race. Not sure about Skinner, but he's a 21 year old splitting time with the AHL and ECHL. Blais is a warm body.

The people complaining about this trade should consider that Tarasenko has a NTC. If he doesn’t want to go to the team the Blues are trying to trade with he simply says no. So he really has us over the barrel with regard to the teams he will be traded to. There is no such arrangement with ROR so I would expect a better return.

Thanks for the insight. I never heard of him before 30 minutes ago. Good luck with Blais (who I liked), and one of our 1st round picks. Blais looked good when we first got him but has struggled this year coming back from his knee injury. He did go on a goal scoring tear recently in the AHL.

Tall and lanky. Can skate well, but isn't fast. Likes to jump into the play offensively when the puck is deep in the zone, but pretty much always just takes it below the goal line or throws a meaningless sharp angle wrister on net. Defensively, he's a mess. He'll hit and crosscheck, but runs around, leaving his man open in front of the net. Often fails to clear the puck by soft-chipping it along the boards.

Every once in a while, he'll play a game where he steps up at the lines aggressively and you think there's something there, but it disappears as quickly as it appeared. Sub-NHL-level breakout passes. Will hit skates and miss open guys for icing regularly.

His mom seems nice and funny, though.

Hopefully he gets better as a Ranger but obviously Tarasenko was why we made the trade. Actually I do not even know why we traded for this Dman. We have 6 and had Halek as a 7th. Maybe Halek wanted out.

This... I believe there really were only a very small number of teams that would have both given us a first and gotten the green light from Vlady... It's a good trade under the circumstances... Going to miss Vlady, one of my all time favorite Blues
