Kent Hughes always keeps getting a player from that Hoffman trade tree that we need to somehow get rid of.

It's as if we can't be done with the Hoffman trade. There's always a player that we need to remove from the lineup.

not a bad move, but I don't entirely understand it. Another 3rd? Hughes already has like 21 picks in the next two drafts. I guess it's currency to move up.
Or to make another Dach/Newhook move. Anyway it's hard to criticize a gm for stockpiling picks during a rebuild. I agree there's a limit to that though.

Keeps on adding picks along the way too, which is more important since Montreal is in a rebuild.

Kent has pretty much built a great reputation at this point in finding homes for players when they want to move and finding trades for GMs struggling to make room. Most of his trades have been in some way a win win scenario for both teams.

For fans it can be hard to see the value in that. Bergevin used to call everyone but that didn't mean he worked with everyone. Hughes is building a good relationship as a guy who can get everyone moving to their goals. That's going to help the next time a team has a player who wants to move and Montreal is free on the list. The GM will know he can make a deal with the Habs that works for everyone.

There's a long term plan in place with this club and the next two drafts is a big part in establishing it. It's okay if your favourite prospect doesn't get a locked spot due to a 31 year old on the team taking up some of the time. It's not about this season. It's not about next season. This is a long term project and I'm confident in Hughes and Gorton.

(Even if I still think they got it wrong at last year's draft)

Can he be put in the AHL for conditioning purpose at the start of the season?

Anyways, loving the third. We've drafted some good players since 2018. Most notably Engstrom.

Just what Montreal needs: another fourth-line forward.

I don't think the point of the trade was to add a 4th liner to the roster. Main goal was mostly to resolve the goalie situation while getting something valuable back in return which is the 3rd.

Pearson is kind of irrelevant. Was just a 1 year throw in cap dump by Vancouver. The Habs can take on that kind of stuff since they're still in mid rebuild. Guy won't be here next year and may get waived or traded or used in a 13-14th-15th forward role until he's UFA next summer

If this is a half-assed rebuild, then the only way they could whole-ass it is if they traded Suzuki and Caufield.
I wouldn’t go that far. But a rebuilding team that isn’t bad enough to pick 1st and is up against the cap because of a bunch of useless players that have zero value doesn’t give me much confidence right now.

Not every trade needs to be a blockbuster. Trade is fine in isolation. If he rebounds back to his form the year before last though this trade makes our team better when it's the last thing we need.
