Not to rain on the parade, but even if the Canucks finished dead-last in the NHL, they'd still only have a 25 percent chance of winning the draft lottery. As things stand tonight, they're at 7.5 percent.

And this is the Canucks we're talking about. The team that's dropped in almost every draft lottery over the last decade. Heck, they stated their existence by losing a spin of the wheel in a two-team draft race against Buffalo.

I realize hope springs eternal for Canuck die-hards.......but come on.....they're not winning the lottery.
It’s hard to agree with this, to some
Extent I feel like we could go 0-82-0, not score a goal all season and average like 10 goals
Per game against and still end up dropping the max amount of spots.

Stop.

If they finished dead last, they would have 25% odds.

This victim, curse, nonsense is illogical voodoo gibberish.

There’s been nothing to suggest “Canucks luck” is a thing other than people’s bias making the team out to be super unlucky because…. …idk a victim complex?
Newer Canucks fan are you, over a 5 year period we were the worst team in the NHL, top pick was fifth overall. It would no doubt seem reasonable to conclude we are not lucky, don’t you think ?

The schedule is harder in Feb than March and easiest in April. If we can stink it up good this month then more likely to trade away more at deadline and more likely we lose games against teams beneath us in March/April. Outlook is ok too good for the tank. The faster we get rid of Horvat the better.

We may be playing meaningful games in March/April after all.

The key here to your super scientific analysis is even in your post “You feel….”

New fan ? No. Just not into crying about fictional mysticism of the Canucks being unlucky. I don’t know why people want to play it like we a victim of universe. It’s absurd.

It has been clearly awful moves that have put them in the position they have been in.

If the team gets 7.5% odds of drafting 1st, they get 7.5 odds of drafting first. It’s not that hard.

Sounds like more players are going to be shut down too, so between shutting players down and trading some, our roster could start to look real bad.

Glancing at the Western Conference standings as we head into the All-Star break, the Canucks are officially 14 points adrift of the last playoff spot in the West.

But they're only nine points clear of being last overall in the NHL. The scary thing if you're a Canucks fan, is that the teams arrayed below them knew they were tanking before the season even got going. You name the team; Columbus, Arizona, Anaheim, San Jose and Chicago, basically ran up the white flag in the exhibition schedule.

The Canucks? They're tanking despite going with mostly a veteran lineup and preaching to the faithful that they were right there knocking on the playoff door. And they've been remarkably free of injuries before Mikheyev went down.

When you're terrible while actually 'trying' to compete....well does it get any worse than that?

There is a 55.7% chance of drafting 3 if you go 0-82-0.

That was the trademark of Benning's tenure as GM.

I'm used to it by now.

The Benning/Rutherford plan: Intend to be good, end up being as bad as the obvious tank teams.

Maybe the Hockey Gods are smiling on the Canucks after all

Beyond belief the Canucks are only 6 points out of 30th in the league.

A new coach with a system that most on this team are not suited to.

Management altering their direction (maybe they were always this plan) and sitting out injured players. Goes to show how often this doesn't happen though.

A season of all out offence making players on this team highly valued.

Nine more games against bottom teams, lose them all and ?

IMO 73 points gets 30th, that is still 15 more wins out of 33 games so that might be a stretch if they make substantial trades.

I'm curious to hear what people expect to happen to the team's future even if we do miraculously get Bedard.

i think rutherford and allvin try to compete, sign a bunch of mediocre free agent deals, cap lock the team and get fired 2-3 seasons out. future beyond that depends on whether the aquilinis finally hire a competent manager and let them manage

No proven management group is coming here. They only got JR because he is a fossil. Everyone in the league knows that the Aquilinis will always be heavily involved in hockey operations.

Based on strength of schedule and assumed results, I have the final standings as something like this:

1) Blue Jackets
2) Blackhawks
3) Ducks
4) Sharks (53 pts)
5) Coyotes (53 pts)
6) Canadiens (66 pts)
7) Canucks (67 pts)
8) Red Wings (70 pts)
9) Flyers (72 pts)
10) Senators (72 pts)
11) Blues (74 pts)

-I didn't actually go through and perform the same exercise with the bottom 3 teams
-Blues and Red Wings weren't included previously
-interestingly, since the last time I did this, every team has outperformed on their expected record. This makes sense as expected results don't account for upsets
-Canadiens and Flyers are the biggest risers (7 more points each)
-Canucks only gained an extra two points
-Red Wings have, probably, the toughest schedule in the NHL to finish the season

Previous (Jan. 15th):

1) Blue Jackets
2) Blackhawks
3) Ducks
4) Sharks (48 pts)
5) Coyotes (50 pts)
6) Canadiens (59 pts)
7) Canucks (65 pts)
8) Flyers (65 pts)
9) Senators (66 pts)

I'm just a bit confused by the thread and find it impossible to drum up enthusiasm for the idea when it looks like we might be screwed even with Bedard, at least in the near future, but maybe I'm just not seeing the path forward. What exactly is the outcome that people here are cheering for?
