Sigh. What is with this organization and their meaningless late season pushes? Most years I don’t care that much but this year the top 4 is really special. So incredibly frustrating.

Well some tanking is happening....our furnace and dryer died last night.

Fire sale looming?

I'll send you a 4th round pick and a sweater for your Ray-Ban glasses.

As unhappy or unsatisfied as I think most here should be and are. As a few have said this was going to happen. Not because the team is better or anything like that, but our schedule is pretty soft. 9th has been most likely for some time. Just Martin and OEL were really doing so well for use.

you were using your furnace to dry your clothes?!?! :sarcasm:

Seriously though, sorry to hear that. Sucks that both happened at once.
after further investigation it looks like we lost our 240 service. So either an issue before it gets to our house or an issue with the box. Just waiting for electricians and electric company to show up...

And today is actually cold down in these parts. By cold I mean it's about 14 deg C and cloudy.

It’s not a late push. It’s a team that is too good to tank that’s finally getting average goaltending. Plus Bruce and Bo are gone which helps.

Well, glad it doesn't mean replacing both dryer and furnace. Probably a simple fix.

as much as i hate to say it. the key is Boudreau. his insistence on not playing defense is not conductive to winning. the no-system talk is real. Demko can't save the barrage of cross crease passes.

I remember when we went through these end of season meaningless hot streaks during Benning's tenure. He convinced me that these wins are important and helps build player's confidence and will help them the next season. Losing mentality isn't healthy he said, and these wins will build character. And he was right. Look where we are in the standings.

Sure, call it what you will. Not super interested in semantics - just annoyed that they have started winning at the worst possible time.
I hate what the NHL has become with half the teams trying to bottom out. I hope the Canucks win the rest of their games. This lottery system has to go

I think Tocchet deserves a lot of credit for getting the team to cut down quality chances (although lately at the expense of the total shot volume) and just basically add hustle and determination throughout the lineup.

That in turn has improved all the goalie performances.

How much could we possibly tank now? I don't think the team is going to put up as many pathetic performances going forward. Once a team tastes winning they probably won't give up on it anytime soon.

From a team play perspective these are great building block games for next season. For the tank it's a disaster.

Yet they finished last year under Bordeau on fire as well. The bigger issue was the players. OEL regressed so much the tab is better without him. Stillman was beyond abysmal. Martin completely imploded. It wasn't helped by a few others starting slow. Good Demko is a completely different goalie than bad Demko that started the year. I don't think they be getting significantly different results under Tocchet with OEL Stillman, Martin and bad Demko playing than they did under Bruce.

We would have lost several of the recent games they won with those guys playing. Martin would have given up 6 against Toronto for instance.

Edit:
I was wrong about players, that are traded after the deadline being able to play in the remainder of the regular season.

Thanks to rypper, for his link to cap friendly, .

The thing is that the Canucks and Tochett think that they are building for next year.

The reality of the situation is that it's extremely easy to perform with no pressure on you. As soon as next season hits, all of the good habits you see will be washed down the drain when there are actual expectations. There's players that excel and dominate in practice and scrimmages but not in Live games for this reason.

There's a reason why guys like Pods and Miller are playing better right now.

It’s always easy to look good when there’s zero expectations.

Cheering for Philly, Blues and Habs. Not point in looking at teams like Sharks and Coyotes

I disagree, Not everyone is tanking. The Canucks have played a variety of teams in a variety of playoff positions - the Leafs/Bruins are at the top, Blues bottom feeders, Preds technically still in the wildcard race. I think the Canuck's recent good play is too consistent across these variables.

I definitely understand that there isn't as much pressure at the moment. But let's face it there's very little pressure for 2/3 of the season (especially just after the season starts and then the dog days before the all-star break) and we didn't see these kinds of efforts. And there are plenty of guys who should think that they are fighting for jobs.

The other thing is that a structured approach like this can be maintained with not a lot of talent. Plenty of people think Tocchet made the most of a mediocre roster in Arizona. That should work here except that this team has great talent in key areas.

This is what Jannik Hansen said too. It's easy to win when there's nothing at stake. They're garbage time heroes.

It's even easier when most of the playoff teams look at the Canucks on the schedule and treat them like a joke. They're playing at half speed, or decide to play for a period because that's all they need to do. Or even shoot for goalie goals...

Winning is a hell of a drug.

If the pathetic performances were mostly because of coaching, we’re much better off than if it’s because of some fundamental rot that most lottery teams have because drafting high doesn’t always fix the rot. Just look at Edmonton as an example.

A few different players, a few different coaches, same result.
Meaningless wins.
