I mean that's basically what the NBA did with trying to give cap discounts for players who stick with their franchise for a while before they went in with promoting the players over teams. I like that idea, and would love the NHL to try and adopt something similar. Maybe a 25% cap discount after 5 consecutive years with a team, raise to 50% after 10? That way, you are encouraging franchise cornerstones to stay with their teams for longer, which helps fans, with the added bonus of being able to increase salaries for tenured players. Seems like a win-win

Not to take this too far off topic. But I would like to see the cap hit linked to round drafted. Players drafted in the first would be full cap hit, players drafted in the 2nd would top out at maybe 8% of cap, 3rd/4th 7%, 5th/6th/7th 6%. It would apply only to players that the team drafted or acquired prior to playing 25 NHL games(could be any low number agreed upon by owners NHLPA). This way teams would have an incentive to develop players and more flexibility retaining the hidden gems they developed.
