If you think he's a "great" goalie (I'm not so sure about that but it wasn't my words) then you play him.

Goalie is the one spot that doesn't change much from playoffs to regular season. See the puck, stop the puck.

Cam Ward won the Conn Smythe as a rookie (and Ward had fewer skins on the wall than Ned did at playoff time). I'm unconcerned about "playoff pedigree." Either Ned is good enough to win or he's not. I think he's good enough considering he's out here sporting a .923 and hasn't wilted despite playing 3 overtime games already.
And even THAT is underselling it a bit when you consider it was 4 overtime games in a row, including back to back 2OT losses where he was a main factor we were even in positions to win. He played over 300 mins in the first 4 games of the last series and did more than enough for us to get the sweep. And then he shuts the door over the next 2 games, both going to OT, to push us over the top.

Like, there are a few problems with the team right now. Goalie is not one of them.

I did improv comedy with Vanessa Bayer one time. She was on a Chicago improv team called "Chicago Sashay Company". They were amazing. Vanessa had just started and didn't have much experience, but she was really talented. She came across as very humble and sweet.

Let's win game plz.

They played by the rules. You don't have to like it, but it's the truth.
Not only that, but almost all of their high-salary players were drafted and/or developed in house. McDonagh is the only high-priced acquisition and that was 3 years ago. So it is not like they are the Yankees of hockey. In fact, I wouldn't mind if the cap went up for every player after the first 10 who played his first NHL game in the organization. That way you reward commitment to drafting and developing over trades and free agency.

Unless Johnson goes off in this series, Kucherov's LTIR will have little impact on this matchup. He's one part of the savings. The other was the flexibility to go longer term with their RFAs, which is not meaningful on the ice in 20/21.

If you're looking to downplay a potential loss, just go with coaching, injuries and possibly uneven reffing. The usual.

Canes will win.

Anton Babchuk gives Jake Bean his energy before the game. The first shot Jake takes from the point is so hard it rips a hole in the fabric of spacetime. Brock McGinn goes back in time to alter the career path of Andrei Vasilevskiy, who is now an
overweight, mentally fragile, career backup ala Scott Darling. In the process Jordon Staal is accidentally turned into half man/half moose and leads us to victory by scoring 10 goals.

It's not like they signed up a bunch of mercenaries using the cap as an exploit. Any other team could've done the exact same thing they did. They just have such an insane amount of talent they could lose the guy who is maybe the best forward on the planet and still be one of the top 5 teams in the league.

I mean that's basically what the NBA did with trying to give cap discounts for players who stick with their franchise for a while before they went in with promoting the players over teams. I like that idea, and would love the NHL to try and adopt something similar. Maybe a 25% cap discount after 5 consecutive years with a team, raise to 50% after 10? That way, you are encouraging franchise cornerstones to stay with their teams for longer, which helps fans, with the added bonus of being able to increase salaries for tenured players. Seems like a win-win

The problem is, none of that exists now. So I really don't care that in the end, what Tampa is doing would go by that. What they did was blatant cap circumvention, and everyone knows it.

It’s funny how much one weird goal changed the entire mindset around this series. There’s no particular reason the Canes shouldn’t hold their own tonight and over the next few games. All this talk about it turning one-sided is way premature.

it will be less premature after the 5-1 loss tonight, however
