Player Discussion Tage Thompson 2

Where did anyone say that Thompson also hasn't put in work? As for Don and the move, in his own words:

Even earlier -

Don moved him, Thompson did work as he did when they sent him down and when he rehabbed the shoulder. Not sure why you are loathe to give Don any credit in how this has worked out.

I gave Don the credit plenty. Everything Don says here is in line with my last post. He's stated several times after these quotes that the move to center helped, but that people are putting too much emphasis on that as the reason he's among the biggest stars in the league. He chuckles now when someone bring that up, and has to correct them, since it's brough up so much.

There's been a lot of hardworking hockey players over the last century. Are there any that suddenly move to center at 24 and leap into top 10 shooting % and shot quantity after being below replacement value?

Maybe he became a hard working player? This is a singular event since they started tracking shots in the 60s.

The 'hard worker' thing is pretty overplayed IMHO. Every player who gets to the NHL is a hard worker. There is the occasional guy who just has SO much natural talent they can float through and dominate until they hit the NHL, but that is rarer and rarer these days as the lower levels get more competitive. The old trope of the lazy skilled player is on its deathbed.

Tage's rise is a weird mix of skill, a late growth spurt, and being handed an opportunity to play consequence free hockey at a professional level. I have to think the off ice stuff with his wife probably contributed to his struggles as well. He was the bust of busts for his entire ELC for him to suddenly become this good is an improbable as any thing you will ever see out of hockey.

Anyone trying to use him as an example of holding onto players hoping they'll develop later is like people who continue to buy lotto tickets because someone they knew won 100k once.

Hard worker isn’t a box checked yes or no equally.

It's not really a binary yes or no, some players HAVE to work much harder than others to stay in the NHL. Some are just naturally gifted athletes and while they still have a good diet, practice hard, they may not need the long hours in the weight room others do. What I am pushing back on is the idea of 'first on/last off the ice at practices, putting in hours at the weight room', that sportswriters/broadcasters love to use an example of 'hard workers' and will pan players for not doing (see Paul Hamilton/Reinhart). It's an antiquated way to judge players.

You’re being obtuse. Work harder is referring to players that buy into the system and scheme and work 100% towards with a positive attitude. It’s something Tage did. It’s something Mitts has done. It’s something a lot of players don’t do

Agreed.

I wouldn't have said this last season, but Tage deserves to be the next captain of the Buffalo Sabres. He is the symbol of perserverance and hard work.

I do not know if Thompson is that kind of a leader.

My guess is Dahlin might be the leader in the clubhouse at this point. And Tuch, Cozens, and Samuelsson might be ahead of Thompson in that pecking order.

Agreed.

If we're looking long-term.....gotta think Dahlin is the leader in the clubhouse for the C, and I don't think it's particularly close.

Girgensons has the A on his sweater until he's no longer on the team.

The other A? Tuch/Cozens/Sammy/Thompson are all in contention for that.

Isn't is nice to have so many legit options?

He’s certainly got that work attitude, is our long term 1C locked up. Only those in the room can really make that assessment but happy we chose Okposo this year so we didn’t immediately make a long term commitment to any specific guy.

Agree also about Dahlin but although Tage doesn't strike me as a loud locker room presence, he has seemed to be a big part in unlocking Krebs. Not to take away from Krebs' commitments but you he wouldn't have reached out to a schlep.

If you want to put a letter on the person who “unlocked Krebs” you have to give it to Mittelstadt. Getting away from him turned his game around immediately.

Except that Girgensons-Krebs-Okposo has played almost twice as many minutes and has a worse xG% than when Krebs has played with Mittelstadt (and Olofsson, who is near the bottom of every line combo in xG%). The advanced stats aren't the bible, but they sure as hell refute the story you're trying to tell.
