Player Discussion Tage Thompson 2

For those wondering -

Go to the 35:55 minutes as they talk about Necas and then they talk about Thompson being offered around for a 5th and there no takers.
Could you imagine if Tage would've done this somewhere else? The fallout would be insane.

I was in the anti-Thompson camp immediately following the ROR trade and watching him flounder for a few seasons. He finally started looking like an NHLer to me during the 20-21 preseason but then he got injured. This really seems like an unprecedented rise to superstardom we've been blessed with.

So I was just out walking my dog Dexy as I do every day when I come home from work. I take that time to listen to various hockey podcasts. Today was 32 Thoughts with Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek. Towards the middle of the podcast, they were kind of bouncing around and talking about Martin Necas and how he should have been a Sabre, but that's not the story for this thread. The thing that's relevant here is that Friedman has a source who told him that about 3 years ago, the Sabres were in negotiations with an un-named team to trade Tage for a 5th round pick. Friedman could not get the name of the team from the source but did say it was a "very good team". Used it as an example of how wrong so many were about Tage.

Back then, the Sabres might have been happy with that deal, but I guess the 5th was a bridge too far. Today? All I can say is Yikes!

Please don't kill the messenger, especially if you hate or don't respect Friedman. Just reporting what I heard.

Edit - Just saw that this was posted upthread. Sorry for the duplicate.

For shits and giggles, does anyone remember or know how to find the clip of Thompson getting the puck alone in front of the net, and like turning around the wrong way/deking no one?

This would have been a couple years ago. It was kind of funny and made some fans sour on him even more at the time, but that first clip reminded me of it for some reason.

Dear God I'm NOT picking on him, but I have noticed that in general he's starting to fall a lot again. I'm thinking maybe he's tired at this point.

Maybe Granato could have played a few other guys to close out that game?

The regulars may be wearing down as the season progresses.

I realize you need enough players you can trust but just saying.

See Lindy Ruff in this regard

The regulars may be spent as the season progresses.

See Lindy Ruff with respect to line utilization
He took a massive stinger in the foot early on, hard to blame him for it tonight, at least.

Yes, not talking about that play. Just in general.

Mainly, concerned Granato may be wearing some guys out.

Just something I've noticed last few games

His ice time probably isn't an issue, he played just under 18 minutes last night. You have tons of players who average far more than that even among forwards.

Could have been the ice, or any number of factors for the falling down. Skinner does it off and on also. There are some games where Skinner seems like he is spending half his time laying on the ice. Odd for a guy who is known as a great skater, but maybe he just wasn't getting his edges that night, maybe he's pushing himself too hard and needs to calm himself a bit. I wouldn't worry too much about it so long as he's being effective in his role.

Thinking could also be teams are being more physical with him. In addition to the other factors mentioned

Marek and Friedman discuss Tage in the context of Tage vs. Eichel as a player rises to stardom, re-addressing the ROR deal:

Yea, players do fall down a lot when they play too much. Common sign of fatigue is falling. You’re onto something maybe

In reflecting on the poll on the main board, if somebody told me Tage Thompson would surpass Jack Eichel as a player 3 years ago, I would have assumed it was a troll.

Not only has Thompson been better than Eichel this season (and Jack was playing very well prior to his injury), he is playing better than Eichel's absolute prime for us, which was his 19-20 season.

Then again, if he keeps this up he's in the Matthews conversation. But that's for another day.
