Because it’s not 2008 anymore
I agree of course . But its a big chance power quinn dahlin Thompson cozens all Will earn 8 mil so Adams need to figure it out to keep them all. Skinner Will hurt us in 3 years . They Will need to retain on him for a trade

Power has a ways to go before he looks like a $8 million dollar player.

Quinn same thing, but his ability to score goals will help.

Dahlin depending on how does for the rest of his contract, will probably get $8 million at some point.

Thompson will need to show that last year wasn't a fluke or a flash in the pan. IF he does that, then I can see that happening. If he falls off, then I see him hitting a cap of $6 million.

Cozens, if he can show an exponential improvement in his offensive ability, might get lucky and reach that point. If he stays close to the level he appears to be at, he's looking to be a guy that turns out Kadri type of contracts.

I dont think you understand the current market. Sabres can wait this season out and hope he falls on his face in which case you pay him a short deal with a lower AAV (4-6M) that would likely take him to UFA. Thompson isnt a 5-6M player right now. He just scored 38 goals. A contract extension today starts with a 7. If he scores 40ish again it starts with an 8 or a 9 on a long term deal.

Heres the list of Centerman with more goals that him this year:

What do the stats look like if you look at things over a 2 or 3 season timeframe?

I'm sure Thompson and his agent would love to negotiate based solely on last season.

But, that would be dumb. Like paying Skinner like a perennial 40 goal guy...

Quinn same thing, but his ability to score goals will help.

What i mean is We have super good pieces that we havent had since 06-07 . This is my opinion . We have also 1 next season and 3 second picks : these players will cost so we cant take on any expansive contracts .

Skinner Thompson Olofsson
Cozens Savoie Quinn
Krebs Kulich Tuch
Asplund Ostlund Peterka
Girgensons Mittlestadt Rosen

I think we Will be good and i believe Adams plan is just to play this out. Powe Dahlin Samuelsson etc many good pieces . I think we are much closer then other Belive . But i dont se any other teams that have these many Young pieces maybe wings but think we have more of them

It doesnt matter because he doesnt need to sign an extension. Its his first full season at Center and with a competent coach. Hes 24 and going to be an RFA. If I am Thompson I dont sign unless its atleast $7M. I bet on myself and see I will be the top Center for another season and can then really cash in.

Good plan, of course the Sabres would need to be on board as well, and on the same side of the table as you.

For Thompson it is. I can understand the Sabres not wanting to extend him to big money right now because it was a breakout season and they have him next season and 1 more season after that of team control when he is a RFA. Thompson wouldnt be wise to take a team friendly long term deal if he thinks he can continue this scoring

Skinner Will hurt us in 3 years . They Will need to retain on him for a trade
Skinner can be bought out at a reasonable hit (I think it’s 2.4m off the top of my head) if and when we need to cross that bridge. If we need to cross that bridge that would be amazing news because it would mean that pretty much everyone we are hoping to break out in a major way did it. Some of these guys can also get bridge deals to help us manage and that’s OK too, not everyone needs an 8x8. The cap will also continue to increase at a quicker rate than these Covid years have given.

And the Sabres don't need to sign him this summer unless the number makes sense for them.

If Thompson wants a deal this summer, it likely means that he takes less than guys like Norris and Thomas because he only has one year of any sort of production worth paying for.

I’d like to see him for another season before committing as well.

But not because of Peter’s rationale. What does he think is going to change? Teams were already putting their top matchup guys on him from almost the start of the season. Its not like its going to get much tougher on that front. It might even get easier if another offensive line emerges

I’m more interested to see how Tage handles the level of expectations he’s going to have because of what he did last season. That comes with a pressure he hasn’t dealt with before.
I'm also slightly worried there was a lot of luck involved. No real basis behind my concerns, just a sample size thing in the back of my head.

I think the bigger issue with Thompson is what can he do in a more well rounded role? And, what can he do if they move Tuch off his line or put him back with Asplund and VO?
VO would be a horrible idea. Skinner - Thompson - Asplund might be worth a try

I can see Tage heading back to the dressing room while drunk HF posters are yelling "Giraffe!!" at him and he's just rolling his eyes.
