Sorry for lurking on your board, it's just that I really miss TT. St. Louis fans are now seeing what we gave up. They would rather have given up Kostin. He's our 3rd prospect, TT was our 4th. Kostin is 19, Russian, winger with an adult body, ex-boxer, hands, 1st rounder we traded Reaves for, stud power winger.

What surprised me is his skating, it’s good - not ”good for a big guy” but actually good good.
That trade still destroyed us, but TT is an entertaining player.

No offense, but I hope.

I've never seen ROR play. We gave up a lot IMO.

Berglund scores. He's a former 1st round pick. He is great in the playoffs, when a big body helps. We wanted him to be a 2nd line center, but he doesn't have the offensive awareness or vision to set a play. His assist to goal ratio is disproportionate. But, he will score 20+ goals no matter who he plays with.

Sobotka. Little winger with gumption. He was a great face-off center before he had a contract dispute. He argued over a few hundred grand and ended up in Russia, KHL, for about a year and a half. Once he returned, he didn't have the edge from before. He acted like a scorer, but didn't. Either way, he is an effective 3rd liner. His strengths are face-offs, holding the puck (He is small, but strong) and can position his body such that he can stall anywhere. This is particularly effective in the offensive zone. Coach Yeo even went as far as playing Sobotka with Tarasenko because he could hang on to the puck forever. It didn't really work in the long run. But, Sobotka is also known to take plays off. Known for just collecting a paycheck. Maybe it's because we know money decided his future in the past.

No need to apologize :)

I love Tage's game also from a defensive stand point. from what I've seen, he's looked great, and I think he'll push for a roster spot!

That's actually a horrible place to go to. St. Louis fans avoid that forum like the plague. Its nickname is "The Asylum" because it is 98% trolls and not moderated.

You are absolutely 100% welcomed here, your posts have been informative and added to the board. Feel free to stick around for #TageRage!!!

I took issue with whether your claim was factually accurate or not.

Really? You are a blues fan and you would rerank him as 3rd? Didn't I just say that? CRAZY world.

He said TT was their 4th best prospect.

But, nice try.

When he became a Sabre he stopped eating meat. If he gives up vegetables with the Blues, we're looking at one of the most lopsided trades in history.

Did not know this.
Damn hippies...perhaps he gives up on vegetables too now, and only eats fruit that has fallen from trees.

It would make me feel so much better about the ROR trade if TT becomes a steal. Really routing for the kid.

Blues fan here. I really like the kid, I hope he becomes a good player for you guys. I'm not happy that we 'lost' him, but we absolutely needed Center improvement, and to get something good you need to give up something good. I still feel the Blues 'won' this trade, but that doesn't mean Tage is a bad player, contrary. Thomas, Kyrou, Kostin and Thompson were called 'the big four' and Army was very hesistant in trading either one of them. Trading Kyrou and Thomas was a 100% no-go because they add specific skills and attributes we were desperatly looking for. So that leaves Kostin and Tage. Personally I would've prefered to trade Klim, but I can accept Tage going the other way if that means we finally get a decent Center for Tarasenko.

Last year Tage was brought in too fast due to the Blues having a lot of injuries. His numbers weren't shockingly good, but that was mostly because he had to play a specific role that didn't really suit him, mostly alongside guys that weren't good set-up men (he's a finisher, he's not someone who drives an entire line). Don't be fooled by his numbers. Tage wasn't really ready for the NHL, but the team also didn't have people with the skill to justly compliment Tage's skills: we just weren't able to make him look good. The weird thing is, with all the signings and the trades we made this summer, he would surely have done a lot better if he was still with us. Now we DO have a team with players with skills that are complementary to his. Imagine him next to Bozak or Thomas, he would surely do a lot better. I don't know what the projected Buffalo lines are but I really hope you guys will put him next to a good playmaker. Put him next to Mittelstadt or Eichel and he will eventually shine. Put him on a Sobotka - Berglund - Thompson line and you might aswell label him a bust already.

EDIT: spelling

Diehard Blues fan here. I was and am very disappointed to lose TT. He is going to have a long and prosperous career IMO. Coach Yeo used him incorrectly last year. When he's on a line with skill, his play in the offensive zone is fun to watch. But, Yeo used him on a checking line. He was trying to get TT to concentrate on his defensive game. I think he should have left him with Steen and Stastny on a scoring line. Misuse of talent. He's not a defensive forward. I don't agree with the scouts that say he's even good defensively. He's a shooter. 3 slap shots in one play last year. I mean bombs. I had high hopes for him.in St. Louis. His dad has been coaching him since conception. He has great vision and offensive awareness. I hope your coach sees his assets, not his deficiencies, and uses them appropriately. I wish him and Buffalo good luck next year.

Another Blues fan here, and these posts are not accurate. Nobody on our forum is lamenting the loss of Thompson. Him and Kostin were the 2 prospects we would have been fine with giving up, so I don't really care who becomes better between them. The key for the Blues was keeping their top 2 prospects: Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou. Both have performed well in camp.

As for Thompson last year, he did get playing time on the 2nd line. And then he was moved down to the 3rd line. He wouldn't have been moved down if he was producing, it's that simple. And I'm not piling on the guy. He simply was forced onto the roster because we lacked so much depth that we didn't have any other options as RH shots. It wasn't even his fault at all. He's 6'5'' but he was playing at 200 lbs. That's just not heavy enough for the NHL at that height. Now it's understandable because he's only 20 and will fill out. But you're going to lack strength and lose board battles unless you're at least around 215 for the height that he is. Anybody know what he is now? If he can put on muscle, he can be good. But that was his issue - the Blues should have just let him focus on the full year in the AHL.

I tried not to respond, but I went out tonight.

First off, I didn't laminate or make anything up. You definitely didn't read the link to the Asylum. People wished we had traded Kostin over Thompson. As I claimed. Read the link and respond please.

Second, I know he got a chance on the second line, ie Steen - Stastny - Thompson. He did produce. He was still learning the NHL and getting better every game. Much like a very young Pronger I watched grow from a stringbean twerp to an intimidating force. After you watch hockey for a few decades, you can see that player A will probably be better than player b. It was just on his second stint after being demoted. He came back like a different player. That's when he has 3 slappers in one offensive zone possession. Yes, he was forced up the big club due to injuries, but he was the most ready. And he was fun to watch play with talent. Talent needs talent IMO. He had no business being asked to play a checkers role. Needs of the team, like you said (kinda).

Anyway, sorry for venting. It just bugged me that someone said I was inaccurate. If I was, it certainly wasn't intentional. But I honestly don't think I was.

But, the rest of his post was dead on

Did anyone catch the Auston Matthews quotes about Tage in the above article?

To hear Auston Matthews tell it, the Sabres are getting in on the ground floor of something special with Tage Thompson.

Matthews and Thompson spent a year together in USA Hockey’s development program. Back in 2014-15, Matthews was already the dominating force who has captured the attention of Toronto and the NHL. Thompson, meanwhile, was a 17-year-old trying to manage a body that was getting taller but not wider.

“He was kind of a late bloomer honestly,” Matthews said during a recent visit to Buffalo. “When he came in, he was just a really tall, lanky kid.”

The national team listed Thompson at 6-foot-2, 160 pounds. Not surprisingly, the rail-thin right winger had trouble competing at times. While Matthews was putting up 55 goals and 117 points in 60 games, Thompson contributed 12 goals and 26 points in 64 outings.

As Thompson’s height and weight have increased, so have his statistics and confidence. The 6-5, 205-pounder looked like a completely new man when he lined up against Matthews and the Maple Leafs over the weekend.

“He’s really come into his own,” Matthews said. “He’s come into a really good situation here in Buffalo with a lot of young guys. They’ve got a pretty good group of young, core people coming up, and I think he’s going to fit in really well and continue to get better.

“He’s going to come into his body more, and he’s going to be a dangerous player.”

And I couldn’t care less what a Maple Leaf says. Besides a rustling sound as it scraps it’s body over the asphalt and other Maple leafs. :thumbu:

Lost in all the hate for Jack and many others, I couldn't help but notice, Tage was our worst forward. Zero positive impact on the game. Super passive, pulled up on several hits. Couldn't handle the puck. I noticed it in preseason too, but he tries to skill-stick WAAAYYY too much. Without a plan too.

Mittelstadt is a perfect counter-example. He puckhandles to put it in a better position or to pass or shoot. All Thompson appeared to do was try to look cool.

Thompson needs to learn real fast when to be cute with the puck and when not to...or he will find himself learning this in the AHL.
