I am pretty sure that is exactly what they did with the whole Weidman suspension back in the day. By the time the appeal was done the suspension had been served. Which is why in baseball a suspension isn't served until after the appeal process is finished...which makes sense. This in all likelihood is just a f*** you from the Leafs to the league. Spezza will be out the next 5 games after this one.
