I got a letter from the IRS claiming that they've adjusted my 1040 and as a result they claim I owe them $700. I checked my records against what they're showing and it's that they're trying to disallow the $2500 adjustment for Student Loan Interest payments on line 10. Maybe I forgot to attach a Schedule 1 to the 1040 but I most definitely qualify for it and have the 1098-E to prove it.
So I called them today and was on hold for approximately an hour and a half and explained everything to a guy only to have him say that he's the collections department and I need to talk to the account management department, so they transferred me there where I had to wait another hour for a callback from that department, went over everything with that guy for him to conclude that I need to send a letter in the mail and that I can't appeal over the phone. So I wrote an appeal letter and attached all the documentation I had and now have to wait 30 days for a response.
It's pretty clearly an error on their end, so I expect it to be overturned, but when I first got the notice in the mail I was concerned that I had messed up and was going to owe (I prepare my own taxes). And if for some reason they don't overturn it then interest on what they claim I owe is still growing every day, so having the process take 30 days isn't ideal. I still should win, but it's frustrating.
