This might work, if Edmonton can get a right-side replacement. Schultz is not a solid second pair or solid anything at this point, but we don't have anyone in our system who has #1RHD upside, and I think Justin Schultz still might have it if he can get out of Edmonton. Tyler Myers has been amazing since getting out of Buffalo.

I could see a trade, something like Schultz and a 3rd for Rychel and Prout.

Too much for Schultz, IMO.

I would rather give up more for someone like Jones than give up even Rychel for Schultz.

It's funny. When you propose a deal as a fan of both teams, both sides claim to be getting ripped off.

Anyways, I'd also prefer to spend big and get Jones. I think the only way that happens is if we give them a guy with #1C upside. We don't have that - maybe they'd take Wennberg + Jenner. I don't know if that's worth it or not. It's definitely painful. But, if you can come up with a proposal for Jones, and you aren't grimacing in pain at the thought of how much you're giving up, then you're not doing it right.

I'd prefer a package like Wennberg + Heatherington + picks.

a lot of truth there...I'd part with a more NHL ready player since they're in compete now(ish) mode...so like Wennberg + Milano + 2016 1st for Jones...

If I remember right, they have quite a few defensemen in the pipeline that will be ready over the next couple of years...

I don't see Nashville parting with Jones. It's a nice thought, and he'd look great here, but... Ellis might be a more viable target, but I'm not sure I like the Wennberg for Ellis concept that's been floated by Vix and others.

What do you guys think of Dan Girardi? He's not a true top-pair guy IMO, and he's on a less-than-optimum contract, but the teams have a history of trading, and he'd make a good partner for Murray and leave JJ and Savard together. Could he have a Hartnell-like resurgence in Union Blue?

NYR and CBJ made trades when they were in different conferences. I think D.G. would be a good fit, as he is a right shot (CBJ have constantly expressed wanting 3R and 3L shots).

You can say all we need is a 7/8 Dman, if you're okay with us having a mediocre defense. I'm not okay with that.

I was referring to the fact that we have 6 D's under contract. I think we all agree that a healthy Ryan Murray is the only top-pair worthy Dman, but somebody is going to have to play those minutes. My point is that there really are no extra D signed - Reilly, Madaisky, Goloubef, Falk, etc.

Maybe I'm just naïve but I don't think you can pencil Murray into the top pairing. Throw him n the 2nd pair and make him prove over 82 games that he is a top pairing player.
Maybe it's just me, maybe the constant injuries push him down in my mind - but if the CBJ just pencil him into the top pairing next year it's a very bad sign of our lack of quality dmen.

You judge a player by how he plays on the ice, not by his injuries. Now if you're saying he TOI over the course of the season cant be top pair quality thats one thing. But i think its pretty obvious that when hes been healthy hes been our best defenseman, and thats not a knack on our quality of dmen.

Point remains...Johnson/Murray/Savard are going to be those top two guys unless there's some big trade. There's still just 6 blue-liners with a contract. The team remains "hopeful" on Reilly. No contracts for Madaisky, Goloubef, or Falk.

It's even more bizarre when you're the one doing the proposing and finding yourself whipsawing between which of your teams is getting ripped off in the deal. That's when I realized it might be threadworthy. ;)

Yeah, that wouldn't work, for reasons similar to why Draisaitl from EDM keeps getting turned down. Jones has demonstrated top-4 level NHL capability right now, so an equivalent "can't-miss-and-so-far-hasn't" #1C prospect would be necessary. Wennberg doesn't have sufficient "can't-miss" upside to qualify there. The only player we have that would potentially meet that consideration is, well, Joey, and we all know there's no way in hell that's ever going to happen. :)

I'm kind of meh on Girardi. I'd take him, for sure, but I don't think I'd pay all that much.

The Gaborik trade was made when re-alignment had already been announced. So it was made knowing they would be in the same division the following season.

it's not obvious to me at this point. Lot of potential but show it in regular season games that matter.

And the best performing D-man we had over last season (stastically) is a healthy scratch for the Ducks right now. So even if he performed better than the rest of the guys, doesn't make him a top pairing NHL guy. he may be the best we have but that's my point - it's a huge weakness for the CBJ that needs addressed. We need 1-2 top pairing d-men added to the roster. Doesn't matter to me if we have 6 one way contracts, all those contracts are for 2nd and in most cases 3rd pairing d-men.

Be nice if we could take a run at Sekera or even Green/Petry but those guys are gonna want to get paid. Beauchemin would be perfect but he probably doesnt leave Anaheim

I personally dont see us making any moves until after the draft. We'll probably make some moves at the draft, but until we know what's going to become of the 8th OA nothing is going to happen. I predict if we take Provorov or Hanafin we dont make any changes to the blue line. If we take Werenski I think we will pull in another vet to stabalize the backend for awhile.

Viqsi, it appears there's no easy way to do this, but can you construct a deal for Jones?

There's issues here - such as the lower risk with a sure-fire Jones than a guy like Wennberg - but we simply have more of a need than the Preds do for a top D, and you should be able to price in the risk and other factors somehow. The Preds have three d-men who are head and shoulders better than anyone on the Jackets, there has to be a mutually beneficial way to make a deal here, even if it's a practical impossibility.

However, he wasn't the best (statistically) this season and without falling into "the bus" territory :) last season looks more like an outlier than norm. I do agree, we have a need on the blue line but that would be the case with or without Wiz. Wiz was best suited as a specialist but that's simply my opinion. Glad he was part of our team and would have been OK if he remained but I don't see him in the same light as others do on here and his statistics, along with his benching, seem to support that (certainly this year).

Adding a Tanev, Larsson, Ellis, Stone or a few other RHD options would be very welcome in my book.

If Murray can avoid major or even medium-grade injuries next year, I think our concerns about the blue line are greatly reduced. I remain hopeful that the injuries are unrelated and that they're behind him.

edit: not saying blue line concerns aren't valid. Just hopefully the need there isn't as great as it sometimes seems

I think if you're going to target a Preds blueliner, it's going to have to be Ellis. In practical terms, we'd probably also have to send one of our existing righties back, but I'm not sure how to balance that one. (The Preds have plenty of high-quality depth forwards that would make losing, say, a Goloubef or Prout not too terrible, but we aren't exactly lacking in that area ourselves.)

Part of the issue is, as I've said before elsewhere, that while the Preds' blueline depth is ludicrously high in quality, it is equally short on quantity. There's nobody behind them right now. One injury sinks 'em - as was demonstrated in the postseason this year when Weber went down. So there's a hesitation there that one has to overcome to make a deal happen.

Now, if some miracle occurs such as, oh, Strome dropping to #8 overall, then we might have a chance at Jones. ;) But I don't expect him making it to #4, let alone #8.

I think the injury risk can be priced in as well..

The logical reason I don't see a deal happening between the CBJ and the Preds is that the Preds could likely get that #1C from somewhere else. Maybe RNH for Jones.

And add to that practical reasons why a deal isn't likely - risky for a GM's career to make a deal of that magnitude, hard to put together, etc...

Edmonton fans absolutely hate that idea, because RNH is their only top-6 center with anything really resembling NHL experience. I'd like to think that would be doable if we figured out a way to do an Anisimov deal with them first, but I've been unable to come up with anything so far.

I figure that it'll be revisited around this time next year if the Preds and Oilers find themselves in the same situations - at that point, one would presume Draisaitl would have more NHL experience and he'd therefore be of use. In the meantime, tho, I think Poile is happier with Ribeiro and Jones.

That may be about RNH, but I'd wager that in year RNH for Jones is a lot more palatable for them.
