With just one season left on contract it is hard to see how it makes sense to trade assets to rent Vanek for a season when you can just make investments in free agents and keep the assets.

I agree, but he is a lot better than any of the FA available, IMO.

You could get Vanek for Nick Foligno straight up.

News to me! I'm Foligno's biggest fan here and I'd trade him for Vanek in a heartbeat. That's a good sign Buffalo would say no.

Edit: I think a closer deal would be Vanek for Foligno + some mid-level prospects. That's Dansk, Chaput, Golo, etc..

I'd have to think about it, not sure if I'd do it.

He's only got a year left on his contract. I don't see them getting much more than that. And I don't see the CBJ giving much more than that - maybe another prospect or a later round draft pick.

Would you give up less for a year's service of Vanek(we wouldn't know if he would sign long term with us) or trade more assets in a sign and trade? Would Vanek get more then what Giroux got or less?

I also think some team would give up a decent package to land Vanek.

But Buffalo having Marcus Foligno sure makes things interesting if we offered Nick in a package to land Vanek.

Yes, but.. Cup contenders are the teams willing to trade first rounders and star prospects for players like Vanek. They disregard the expiring contract, we don't. We get outbid.

They got two top prospects and a first and second for pominville and he only has one year left on his contract

I'd love a sign-and-trade. Vanek won't make anything like Giroux money, and would probably take a paycut from his current deal (it was an offer sheet after his 84 point season). I'd guess a long term deal at $6.4m per.

Well, that would up the ante a bit from our end, but I'd probably feel more comfortable doing it. The idea of trading away prospects and picks for potentially nothing doesn't seem like how we plan to build our team.

Agreed. If it's a sign and trade we're looking at moving something like Foligno + Erixon + 1st rounder, and it might be worth it. Vanek is that good.

Love the Horton signing, but I hope we at least kicked the tires on Iginla.
Most seem to think Iggy is going to a contender, but not many have the cap space.

Was just watching NHL tonight on NHL network. Mckenzie said that by all accounts Horton liked Columbus very much and it would not surprise him if Horton signed here. Take it for what it's worth and I am not sure how much that is.

Seems like odds are very high. We seem to about the best team left in a non-traditional market with the cap space to work with him and also being in the East, if that is a consideration for him. I would expect about 5 teams in there with serious attempts to get him.

On a side note, I like Giroux. But 8+ million? Why did we have a lockout again?

Vanek - Anisimov - Gaborik
Dubinsky - Filppula - Horton
Umberger - Johansen - Foligno
Calvert - MacKenzie - Letestu

Hmmm...

Depthiness.

I agree with the great depth, but looking at that lineup we are missing Atkinson, Jenner, Comeau, and Boll.

I care less on Boll and Comeau, although Atkinson surely starts somewhere on the right, although I love that group of 4.

Also if he deserves it would love to see Jenner get a chance.

It says a lot of what Jarmo and JD done to build on what were pretty sound foundations left by Howson. I think history will be kind to his tenure here see it as the start of the change that led us to cup contention. Although the progression moved at a slower rate that it could or should.

4 or 5 years ago Atkinson would have been a top line no brainier right out of his draft year and every future year as 1st or 2nd liners. With that line up above people need to earn their spot, and no longer get spot by default.

With the addition of Murrayto an already strong area of our roster and Officer Bob patrolling the crease we are in the best shape preseason than we ever have.

I'm officially on the bandwagon.......come join me!!!!
