Our boys played a decent game, but there is still much to clean up. Stolarz was tremendous, but once again we allowed a team to have far too much puck possession in our end, in the third period, which has the opportunity to be dangerous. However, we did play prevent d pretty well, and despite all of the possession, we really didn't give up much in the way of dangerous opportunities. We need to be more disciplined, and take less penalties as well. 10:12 a game short-handed isn't great... We are also second last in net penalties drawn.

It's nice to see the PP and PK clicking, and I thought that Domi and Robertson had some nice moments in the game. Robertson's effort probably keeps him in the lineup for now, but at some point, all that matters is some production. Holmberg I thought was the weakest of the forwards, outside of Reaves. Patches had a really nice game, and OEL is far better than I could have ever expected. He seems to have found his Arizona form again, where people thought he was a star D.

Despite was @HellasLEAF thinks, Boston is NOT an excellent team, despite our prior record against them, and we all saw that tonight. Their depth scoring is even worse than ours, and their D, while big, isn't particularly mobile. There is a solid chance they don't make the playoffs this year. A good win against a rival is always great, but I wouldn't get too excited about one game, against a struggling team.

It's a win, we are second in the Atlantic, despite a relatively rough start to the year, so I'll take it.

The next two games are Detroit and Montreal... games that in theory we should win, but this group never makes it easy. Hopefully we do take those wins, and take steps towards being a good team, with the right mental preparation. We need the depth to start to step up, and shoulder some of the offensive load.
You are right about Boston. Everyone else will eventually arrive at the same opinion, and Monty is a dead man walking. Just a matter of who replaces him and at what point during this season. As for the Leafs, like it or not, they are doing the same thing they have done the last few years. Slow start, and here comes their annual November run. They will sweep all of these home game and this board will be off their asses, but other than collecting the points these games against mediocre teams don't mean very much (appreciating that collecting the points is obviously very important for the purposes of winning the division).

They’ll get 5 points in the next three games and one the Ws has to be against Ottawa.

How does Berube use the goalies this weekend and next Weds/Thursday?

I’d go Stolarz, Woll, Stolarz, Woll

It’s still a concern. Nylander knows that it takes that willingness to muck it up and not get pushed around yet he didn’t come to his mates aid. I can only conclude that it doesn’t matter enough to him.
Wonder if he did that just becuase it's Marner? Maybe he wants Marner to get filled in? Makes you wonder.

Been saying it for years, but it finally feels different this year -- Boston is just not the same team. They have a lot of chinks in their armour and they do not look good whatsoever.

Not quite, we are worse when missing 1 of them, guess who?

Missing JT 52-21-9
Missing Rielly 46-20-7
Missing Matty 36-19-2
Missing William 46-39 12
Missing Marner 20-17-5

Team record past 8 years 358-189-73

Just more stats pointing to who we need most. lol!
Using your numbers:

Missing JT 52-21-9 winning % 1.38
Missing Rielly 46-20-7 winning % 1.36
Missing Matty 36-19-2 winning % 1.30
Missing William 46-39 12 winning % 1.07
Missing Marner 20-17-5 winning % 1.07

Not quite 'worse' with any, but there is a clear difference between missing any of JT, Mo, or Matty, and missing either Willy or Mitch.

I have been saying for months that Matty Knies needs to be on PP#1 and be that net front presence to make the Leafs PP work.

Finally it took a Matthews injury to see Knies get his shot, but when AM returns hopefully its Marner/Tavares that gets removed to PP#2.

Agree.

Crazy how many back to backs they have so early in the season.
The weekend B2B shouldn’t matter but next week is a little tougher. Personally I’d rather Stolarz against Ottawa but I can understand wanting him in against Washington.

I highly doubt that’s the reason. I. Not convinced he’d would have stood up for his mother.

I haven't looked at the schedule, but maybe because of the 4 Nations face off tournament later this season I think a week in mid February forces them to play more games.

I've yet to find definite proof that he didn't let it happen because it's Marner. Until then, I'm going under the assumption he wanted Marner to get his head kicked in. I bet he was like see Mitch? See, this is what happens when you don't get involved.

It’s not about letting it happen it’s about retaliating.

Yeah thought of that when I initially saw the schedule but then I heard last night that Winnipeg hasn't played one yet, not sure about other teams.

December is wacky in that they play every other day and February the entire league has a light schedule. The four nations is a short 4 day break which is normal for all-star week.

ETA. Looks like the four nations is two weeks….

In this case I think you’d need to make a move for a C, Holmberg isn’t good enough. I’d see about getting Dvorak to play with Marner. Shouldn’t cost much and there would be instant chemistry.

This is Berubes biggest challenge is getting that intensity every night.

The way I look at it is this, with better players Holmberg may up his game and Robertson would benefit as well with Mitch giving him those sweet set-ups.

Dvorak and Mitch were magic together in London, when they added Tkachuk to that line in the Memorial Cup year they became unstoppable

Dvorak is at 4 and change he'd be a tough add for the Leafs, if they were to acquire him now. I'd still put Robertson on that line. He's starting to look like he gets it, he gets back and picks up his man and ties the stick up right away.

Tbh I've thought about getting Marner back together with Dvorak for quite awhile, he's a UFA next year, so maybe they ask and see if Mitch is good with it, and then go after him

He’s a career backup that’s hot right now. Toronto has has 3-4 of the same over the last 3 years.
Maybe, but if he keeps playing this way throughout the season, we have the best goalie we've ever had in the past ~20y.

Goalies take a while to develop, and his numers in past seasons give us reason to be optimistic that this isn't just a hot streak. The real question is, can he sustain this performance over a much larger number of games played in a season (ex. > 40).
