At the end of the day, the Oilers added two top 6 forwards and lost two players who played mainly in AHL last season (50 NHL games between the two of them). Yet, somehow, according to neutral (i.e. Flames, Leafs and Nucks) fans, the sky must be falling.
You missed the point.

They added two top six wingers and gambled on Broberg to grow into a top four defensemen.

When really, they should have added a top six forward and a top four defensemen while banking on Holloway to grow into a top six forward.

Let’s say Broberg didn’t get offer sheeted, they still were slotting him into the top four, when in reality they should have just gone out to find one instead of adding another top six forward.

Holloway - Draisatl - Arvidsson could actually be a competitive line in which you would think Holloway could develop.

There is no chance in hell you think Broberg is the answer in a Nurse - Broberg pairing. And that would have been what they would try to run because they went out and grabbed two wingers.

You could kind of see why Broberg (and agent) were annoyed. Jackson ignored Broberg / Holloway and assumed they would sign with whatever money was leftover. They were after thoughts.

Jackson should have focussed on the areas of weakness rather than spending like a drunken sailor. He should have prioritized Broberg. He (and Bowman) kind of deserved this offersheet IMO. Jackson was complacement.

I don’t think there was a top 4 defenseman on the free agent market worth spending money on.

If the Oilers gave out those criminal deals to Tanev and OEL or even Matt Roy everyone would have been yapping about that

No, Philly was already retaining 50%. His issue was term. Edmonton's issue is no GM is going to give them any favors.
I don't think ceci is a negative value asset.

I think if they wanted to dump him for future considerations they could do so. I don't think they ever wanted to do so because there was no point in just making a hole on defense.

Now they have a reason to dump him for nothing, or less than they would want in order to retain a young player. The only sentiment I've seen here is someone has to do Edmonton a favor by taking ceci, when you could just as easily argue that Edmonton would be doing just as much of a favor to a team interested in Ceci, and there were reports that this was true long before the offer sheets, by simply removing any sort of ask for him in return.

You would have a dime.
Uh huh

Okay I’ll concede to your point, the Skinner/Arviddson contracts are great value and very hard to pass up on when looking at the available defensemen, but they had to do something…

Broberg was a fantasy of an option to be a capable defensemen, it was a hope and prayer that he would slide into the top four and carry around Nurse.

Even that didn’t work out…

All Oiler fans lamented the Nurse-Ceci pairing and expressed hope to Broberg occupying the role based on his recent performance in the playoffs.

As such, most Oiler fans hoped this outcome would continue given the cheap cost of Broberg. And if it didn't work out, then upgrading at TDL was the fallback plan.

Now that the Blues changed all of this, Broberg has become public enemy#1. Many Oiler fans no longer see the potential in Broberg and claim he's always been a crap bottom pairing dman who's also ugly and smells.

Again, hope =/= oppinion. And recent performance means the most recent history.

Also, I have no idea which role did I hope/oppiniated that Broberg would ocupy. The Nurse -Ceci pair was very weak in the playoffs, but how do you fix it with Broberg? Who should be his partner?
This is something which some of us have no idea how to solve, and not even what exactly to hope for.

Broberg played well on his side, playing with Ceci, but, as many of us realized, the Oilers cannot afford to play Broberg-Ceci as the 2nd pair and pay Nurse 9.5 mils to play on the thir pair. And Broberg on his weak side was closer to an AHL D-man than to a top 4 D-man.

The only way Broberg gets into the top 4 is if one of the following 4 happen, and none of them is realistical:
  • Broberg suddenly becomes a top 4 D-man on his weak side
  • One of Bouchard, Eklund or Nurse plays on the worse side.
  • The Oilers play the 9 mils man on the third line.
  • The Oilers someohow trade Nurse.
Now, since you seem to know this better than us, tell me exactly what all the Oilers fans knew/hoped that our second line look next season. Broberg and ?????, with Broberg on which side?

The fact that I don't post bold unrealistic projections or bragg on the main forum doesn't mean that I have an oppinion or that I agree with the oppinion of every other Oilers fan.

Kevin Hayes had a 7.1 million dollar caphit for an other 2 years. How do you figure Ceci is the same price?
Ceci’s value around the NHL requires context. If Edmonton must have adjudication to Ceci’s contract prior to Tuesday mornings offer sheet deadline, it’s going to cost a fortune for Edmonton to trade Ceci. No other NHL team has a timing reason. They don’t need Ceci by Tuesday. So offers to take his contract should come with a massive addition from Edmonton until the offer sheet situation is settled. .

The urgency to acquire Ceci doesn’t kick in until maybe 5 days before the regular season starts. Once real games start and injuries come into play, Ceci’s value will increase. Oilers will need to keep him for many more weeks to see his value increase league wide.

Edmonton doesn't have to make a trade by Tuesday. They can match and work out a trade before rosters have to be set.

It was reported that there was interest in Ceci before these offer sheets. One would assume the Oilers would consider trading him if they thought there was a deal there for him, but it would likely mean the Oilers would look for something, anything, in return. Now they could potentially call up those teams who previously expressed interest and say "Hey if you're still interested, we'll send him your way for future considerations. A team that was interested in him before would now potentially get to add him for free.

I'm not saying this will happen, just that it's the other side of the coin

As I pointed in the other post, Broberg was good only in few games, and only when he played on the same side as Nurse....This makes this hope that he somehow solves the second pair issues a bit unrealistic, unless the Oilers can come up with a new system where two D-man play on the same side.

Our hope was pinning on Broberg because he was a top 10 pick, showed some improvement and he was our only good prospect....Broberg was really our last hope to fix the issue internally, but even then, unless the Oilers somehow trade Nurse (how??), it was not too realistic.

1. Broberg proved to be a better option than Ceci as Nurse's partner, despite playing his off-side in the playoffs.
2. If Broberg made strides this season in that 4 slot, then the need to backfill is no longer needed.
3. If Broberg did not make strides, then he's still a cheap LHD with top-4 potential.

If you read the Oilers threads, the above was the hope and plan.

There was also reports it would cost a 2nd or 1st to move Ceci now that the offersheet has happened. In either case, there is urgency to trade Ceci if that is their plan to free up capspace prior to season start.

Because you can be more or less forced to play for a bad team. I don't think any RFAs on say NYR/FLA right now would want offer sheets thrown their way from say San Jose or Utah
If the offer sheet is from a team the player doesn’t want to play for the he doesn’t sign it. Pretty simple. The player has the choice, why wouldn’t the player like that. The more options the better. Nothing is ever “forced”.

Sure. I don't doubt that teams who may not have wanted to take him on before would now be willing to if they could poach a pick or two out of the deal.

For the teams who previously expressed interest, now they could potentially still have him for no cost at all. But we don't know who has said they want picks and if they were previously interested at all.

You have two of the few centres in the world that can turn trash wingers into elite ones, so instead of allowing them to do that with the likes of Holloway, Duclair, etc you go out and fill out the top six and send a prayer to god that it’s easier for Broberg to turn Nurse into the second coming of Lidstrom than for McDavid to turn a player like Holloway into a 30 goal scorer.

Would have much rather over pay for a premium asset like a top four RHD than to get value contracts on wingers. And don’t get me wrong, they were great signings.

And you know, if Broberg didn’t get offer sheeted it would have looked awesome. In retrospect, terrible cap management and team building.

There was no shut down they were high scoring games lol. Bkues shut teams down to a goal and would put up 3 or 4. If edm didnt have a dynamic offense they wouldnt have survived

I don’t disagree. I think the oilers could waive Ceci today and he’d get claimed by several teams with cap space. I’m surprised they haven’t waived him to force a timing decision of the league …. except I’m not because he’s their number 4 defender. 20 minutes a game. RHD. The Oilers need Ceci this season, pretty badly need him.

It’s Kulak they’d want to dump. He’s their number 5 and Broberg expensively slides into that spot. But getting off Kulaks deal is harder. It’s a year longer in term and he’s the much more ubiquitous 3rd pair LHD.

For the teams who might have expressed interest, they have more than likely filled the role now (via free agency, trade or other). Most teams have their rosters set. I don't see many teams having interest in Ceci at all unless its to extract a pick. He's an overpaid bottom pairing dman at this stage in his career.

Broberg was much worse than Ceci last year save for a large handful of playoff games.

Ceci is a big RHD that can play 20 minutes a night. Makes $3.25mm. How does Edmonton replace that? He’s definitely better AAV value than Nurse, and you have to factor that into your analysis He’d be hard to replace at his AAV or less.

Ceci last season was a big RHD that provided awful play. Terrible decision making. The question is, did he regress significantly or was Nurse the reason for his regression.

Brogerg had a terrible start to the season but he closed it strong and particularly in the playoffs. He was a different player compared to the season start.

The issue with Ceci is that he plays 20 minutes a night, he can look decent but he plays above that line. He isn’t a player that can put a consistent 20 minutes of play.

If the Oilers can find a way to get rid of Nurse, that woudl solve all their problems. But that ain't happenin.
It’s possible, the issue is that you risk pissing off McDavid. They are close friends. It’s unfortunate your need to be in a position to keep your best player happy over what’s better for the team.

I am sure McDavid is well aware of the impact Nurse has when he's on the ice... Trading Nurse wouldn't sever their friendship. I am sure McDavid can cope. There are plenty of hugs to go around. McDavid is not 18 anymore...

The best option for Oilers to fix the Ceci-Nurse pair would be to upgrade Ceci (or Nurse) at the trade deadline. This should had happend last season, hopefully it will happen this season.

As for Nurse-Broberg, when they were on the ice together, the Oilers were outchanced (I think 2:1 in high danger chances, which are not good numbers at all). They looked good just because Skinner was around .950-.960 SV% for those games. And if Skinner can play like that, then I have absolutely no worry as an Oilers fan, but that ain't happening.

Broberg with Nurse as the second pairing next season is a hope which has less than slim chances of happening. It could but probably not.
