It's also an opportunity for the young guys to secure increased roles and grow as players. In my sports playing days, I have been a big piece if a middling team that overachieved and a smaller piece of a juggernaut. I preferred to be the bigger piece.

These guys gave an opportunity to play a bigger role in St. Louis and to develop into better players due to that increased role.

Maybe Broberg feels he didn't deserve to be in the AHL almost all year last year. Here's a team with a big gaping anymore hole and he only has to beat out the corpse of Ryan Suter and some players 12 year old kid in Perunovich. The team, believes in your potential and is willing to make a pretty rare move to bring you in and help you grow.

Or maybe Holloway thinks he's a C that deserves more than 4th line minutes. Maybe an increased role is more important than being jerked around as a bit-player in the push to ensure McJesus' legacy.

When Draisaitl asks for a huge raise squeezing out the amount Edmonton can pay it's depth, after this year, are people going to call him greedy for putting his bag above the team's success? Why didn't McD sign for half his contract? He still would have been set for life and the team could sign a ton better depth. People calling out athletes for decisions that affect their entire life and happiness are so hypocritical. Your not mad he's greedy, your mad that he may not be on the team you root for anymore. (Not you specifically but fans in general)
I think you're bang on about Broberg. There were rumours of a trade request last year because we couldn't make a roster spot for him. Looking at the two teams rosters, Broberg was likely going to play 3rd pair on Edmonton (possibly on his off side). If he has a chance at 2nd pair in St. Louis, it's only more incentive to sign in St. Louis, get a bigger payday, and leave the organization who he feels didn't handle his development correctly or give him enough chances to make it full time.

It's harder to say with Holloway. He had some good looks in the top six in the playoffs, and there isn't much better place to play in the NHL than the Oilers top six, but they also just signed two veteran scoring wingers, so getting a middle six spot would have been more difficult. I can see the Oilers trying to slide him to center eventually, should they match on him. It's pretty common to break guys in at wing and then move them over to center later. Part of me hopes they match on Holloway and give him a marquee spot right out of the gate - either on Draisaitl's wing, of as 3C.

I recall the OS offseasons by san jose with chicago. The did one player then did another a few weeks later
I'm not sure the relevance here.

In this particular instance I'm just curious if Holloway knew when he signed his OS that one had also been tendered to Broberg (and signed) and vice versa.

It's significant because IMO it makes a big difference in the decision process to sign or not sign it in the first place.

If you don't particularly want to leave Edmonton (cup contender vs playoff bubble team) but want the pay raise, assuming you're the only one receiving the OS, you might feel fairly confident that Edmonton will match and feel comfortable signing. If you subsequently learned that they also offer sheeted your teammate, suddenly it may feel like Edmonton can at best choose only 1 of the 2 to stay.

I'd be pissed if I didn't have all the information available to me.

Likely it all happened together though with everyone in the know.

Oh nooooo, they will be making millions of dollars but other players in the room who are also making millions will be in their fee fees. How sad. :(

Or more likely, hockey players aren’t as soft as fans on message boards. Their job is to play a game and make as much money as they can during their relatively short careers, they’re not there to make fans happy about their team’s cap situation. f***in deal with it.
These “veterans” are also only leaving around 500k on the table, and that’s after they have mad their millions. You want to set the tone in the locker room and show you’re willing to leave money on the table to win a cup? Let’s see Draisaitl re-up for 8 year at around 10 million, that’s a defining move that she is you’re invested in winning a cup.

If they are truly teammates they will be happy that these kids are setting themselves up
for their future and not care that they are making a bit more money. saying they would be hated in the locker room over getting paid is a lazy false narrative.

If the leadership group has issues with these kids thinking about life after hockey and financial security. That’s a leadership group you likely don’t want to have in the first place.

Holloway came through the NCAA system so I'm sure he had access to a pretty solid education compared to the average kid his age. Broberg, who knows. I don't know what he did as a kid.

2.5 million dollars for a 3 year elc is life changing money for a massive chunk of the population. Nevermind the fact that neither one of these kids will float through the AHL. They have shown they can play at the NHL level, even if that is as a bottom half of the lineup player only making making shy of a million dollars every year.
When Broberg was in the AHL he was only making about $70K per year. All ELC are automatically 2 way deals. So he made about $1.2M over the last 3 years. Which means that he's actually bringing home less than $600K after paying taxes and his agent. That's obviously a lot of money, but it's unlikely to be setting up a player for the future.

You've got a point on Broberg with respect to role and perhaps feeling he was jerked around. To be honest I think that's why his contract was so inflated, he wants out and both Oilers and StL knew it, so they've made it easier to say goodbye.

As for Holloway, this kid grew up an Oilers fan and was definitely NOT jerked around this year, he was injured and reinserted into the lineup any time he was healthy, with a brief exception of post deadline due to cap contraints. He played every game of the playoffs. And he signed for a pretty "matchable" contract which was essentially used as his trump card in negotiations. I think he'll probably be pretty happy that they match (which I think they will).

Broberg is going to be tough to lose and longer term I am certain the Oilers will regret it... but in the shorter term he's most likely not worth the $4.6M as he works out the inexperience in his game. I'd personally keep him and trade Ceci (who underperformed) + LTIR/Trade Kane (who couldn't play, but it's a big gamble and not one I expect Oilers management to make.

Maybe jerked around was too harsh for Holloway. I more meant that a young kid could want and think he is ready for a bigger role. Edmonton is pretty set for top 6 Cs. Blues are an easier path. We are talking about having career winger Buchnevich who it terrible on the dot as our 2C this year.

The thing with Holloway is puzzling, of course the Oilers will match.
what is puzzling about any of this?

These two young guys just got big pay raises. They used the CBA exactly how it's intended to be used to max out a player's earning potential. An NHL career is a handful of years long. I wouldn't waste many on playing for less than what the market would pay me.

Broberg just signed a life changing deal. Dude is making $9MM over the next two years. If he never plays again... He's made a ton of money that could see him live out a decent life back in Sweden (or any number of places).

Holloway pocketing $4.6MM (minus a lot in taxes) over the next two years still isn't shopping at DollarTree either.

I’m pretty sure he grew up a Flames fan. Born and raised in Airdrie. I believe his parents said “well I guess we’re Oilers fans now” after he was drafted.

But your point remains - high likelihood he’d prefer to remain an Oiler based on playing close to home/having that family support close by.

I love the idea of Broberg making more than Brouchard next season if the Oilers match. That's funny.

How does Edmonton get Brouchard to take anything less than $9.5MM/per next summer? He just took way under market the on his current two year deal. And now Broberg will make like $700k more next year than Brouchard will. And Nurse makes $9.25MM per and we know which player is better between him and Brouchard.

The Oil will need to back up the Brinks truck for Evan.

I'd say 8 x $9.75MM/per is the Brouchard deal. He's MUST make more than Nurse. He's so much much better.

Drai at 8 x $14MM/per being the other deal that is inked. How you fit Holloway and Broberg into this equation when they can't be moved until late August 2025?

Will the Oilers need to trade all of RNH, Ekholm, Kane (that will be a tough deal to move) just to keep Brouchard and Drai? Any trade chips you get for dumping RHN will go to the team taking Kane. Ouch.

Puckpedia has the Oilers at 7.2M over if they match both, which is under the 10% threshold. They can get down to 6.2 if they waive Josh Brown and send him down, leaving Stecher as their only healthy scratch defenseman, but I don't know when they can send Brown down. Or if they even want to.

The decision to match has to be entirely based on whether the Oilers feel the players are worth the cap hit vs the compensation, whether they can remove that 10% overage before the season starts, without only considering LTIR options, and whether they can replace the players in other ways. Losing Broberg means Stecher plays every night, and losing Broberg means one of our AHL guys will have to make the team (Savoie, Lavoie, Jarventie are probably the only ones close enough to consider), or they need to sign a 4th line forward.
You can not waive or put peeps on ltir till season starts. In which you have to be cap compliant. So back to the begining. You lose one or both players. If edm was going tp match they would have already. They are feverishly trying to trade cap out and guess what no 1st or 2nd in 2025 i doubt they want to use a firat or second in 2026. So nobody is taking your dead conyracts for free especially now edm is in a jam. Also teams would rather edm be worse then help them out.

Can a blues fan show me where Broberg slots in the blues D?
Not a Blues fan, but follow pretty closely and hopefully more objective; but a Blues follower should have more "insider" knowledge from local media and sources.

The right side of their D is fairly set with the only real possibility of change (non-injury or trade) is that either Broberg or Suter loses a top 4 job and plays their offhand by beating out Kessel for that #3 RD slot.

Trends:

The last year and a half they've run Nick Leddy-Colton Parayko as top pair but that changed in the second half of last season as they tried to get Scott Perunovich into the mix. It didn't go well and the feeling is that Perunovich isn't top 4 material and at best is a 3rd pair guy with PP specialist role. Leddy even played a good chunk of the last part of the year on 3rd pair with Kessel.

With Torey Krug being on LTIR then there is a hole next to Justin Faulk as well.

The Blues coaching change mid-year also has to be taken into consideration as well here. Leddy's role diminished after that and they were searching for more offensive push from their top pair. Leddy and Suter could be interchangeable as well at 2LD/3LD.

P.O. Joseph was also brought in this off-season and he had a second half surge playing pretty well alongside Kris Letang in Pittsburgh for the last 30 games; but it's anyone's guess where he slots in on the Blues. While they got him cheap I do think they won him over other teams because they had just acquired his brother 3 hours earlier on the same day.

Joseph and Broberg are fairly similiar in their two-way playing styles, but Broberg is bigger and has played his off-hand (in the playoffs) in the top 4; albeit for a small sample size.

So the three guys in discussion (Broberg, Joseph, and Perunovich) essentially have a training camp/early season battle to determine their roles and the #1 spot at Left D is there for the taking.

They are investing much more in Broberg (assets, term, and AAV) than the others so that could be a sign that they expect him to be in the top 4 depending on where he has the best chemistry (Parayko or Faulk). I'm downplaying Perunovich here as his two-way game just hasn't clicked and his offensive contribution hasn't been enough to offset that; however there is a chance that he steps up.

The Power Play QB role is also not set in stone for the Blues. Parayko settled in there for a good while, but Faulk is also pretty capable there, and they tried Perunovich there also; but it's up in the air to find a long-term fit.

Whoever doesn't land a top 4 role could be in rotation with Suter and Kessel for bottom pair ice time, 7th defender, press box, or tradebait/waivers.

LEFTRIGHT
Philip Broberg (23) $4.58 x 2 - RFA
P.O. Joseph (25) $.95 x 1 - RFA
Scott Perunovich (25) $1.15 x 1 - RFA
Colton Parayko (31) $6.5 x 3 - NTC
Nick Leddy (33) $4.0 x 2 - NTCJustin Faulk (32) $6.5 x 3 - NTC
Ryan Suter (39) $0.775 x 1 ~ $2.225 BonusMatthew Kessel (24) $0.8 x 2 - RFA
LTIR: Torey Krug (33) $6.5 x 3 - NTC
AHL Call-up: Tyler Tucker (24) $0.8 x 1 - RFA

Honestly i would trade drais for a top 10 pick and several other pieces from a team that is stacked in the farm. You xan not have hald your cap going to 4 5 players it just cant happen

Way too many fans seem to forget this. It's just a game.
We're not on those post game flights from Edmonton to LA at 2:20am.

We're not on the trainers table to deal with the bone spurs in our ankle from blocking a slap shot

We're not in the coaches office getting yelled at for making a bad outlet pass because we're playing off hand and those passes are much harder to make from the backhand.

And we're not talking to teams about paying us $4.6MM per year when we just made $70k the year before.

We're just fans that turn on the TV 2 minutes before the puck drops and miss the 2nd period because we ate too much Chipotle and need to spend that time on the toilet.

Getting upset at Broberg or Holloway says 110% about the poster and 0.0% about those two players.

They can go 10% over the cap in the summer. They just have to sort out the problem before the season starts. They also have Josh Brown showing as a main roster player at 1M when he is easily a guy we could slide through waivers and bury the hit on, if they have to.
Waivers dont happen till the begining od the season in which you have to be cap compliant. You realize that it still has to be approved by nhl and to spend 10% over. Why do you rhink we are on day 3 and no news of the matxh cause the gm is feverishly trying to find a solution. Edm doesnt have a 1st or 2nd in 2025 and i dount they arw willing to use a 1st pr 2nd 2026 to move dead weight. Edm.management backed them self into a corner. Blues just got a top 4 lhd for a 2nd. Possiblyba young 3lw as well foe a 3rd. Army doesnt make these miatakes he always has the deals done on rfas before offersheets can occur. This was poor management

You're misinformed on the Petro situation but we don't need to get into that in this thread. The offer to Petro was more than fair but he chose the bright lights instead.
Narrator: "He was not misinformed."

Also it's amusing to make a substantive claim that's false and pair it with your determination that it can't be discussed. I know that trick, it's old

After a day I think we match on both of these guys.

They are good players. They will get this kind of money soon anyway. We were going to have to find cap room for them. We might as well do it now

Although make sure to sign Bouchard before next summer for God's sake
Why does that matter?

Bouchard is so good, the kind of offer sheet he'd see is one you'd get a couple unprotected 1st round picks if he left. And probably from a team that isn't very good and those picks could be high!

The right way to offer-sheet a player is exactly what St Louis just did. Little cost to the club that made the offer. Big problem for the team trying to match.

Bouchard is already locked into a future deal that will pay him more than Nurse on a per year basis. Accept that fact. That contract can be signed next summer.

Drai extending is the only contract the Oilers need to worry about before next summer.

Leddy parayko
Broberg faulk
Suter? Kessel

Leddy-Parayko
Broberg-Faulk
Sutter-Kessel

Is the expected by a large sum of the fanbase
Ill be honest it would be nice if broberg took off like playoffs cause he coukd be the perfext partner for parayko with 55s d first and his ability to help broberg out of bad situations.

Thanks for the replies.. this sucks for the oilers but a dream for Broberg. He gets paid and has a fair chance at top 4 minutes on his preferred side.
