Rumor: Steve "Dangle" : Wheeler out of Winnipeg, will probably get bought out

I think we all knew it would come to this...............even at half salary no one wants Wheeler.....
Wat the hell happened in Winnipeg? Buff retires cuz he didn't want to play anymore, Maurice leaves money on the table to get out of there??

Guess it was not Evander Kane's fault eh..........

Kane wanted out from the minute the team was announced to be moving here. Also his stints in Buffalo and San Jose don't lead me to believe he wasn't an issue.

Buff had an ankle injury and there was disagreement on whether he needed surgery or not. Decided to retire instead to go fishing.

Maurice left money on the table because he spent close to a decade allowing Wheeler and Scheifele to do and say whatever they wanted and then left when they finally tuned him out too.

Buying out Wheeler is the way to move on from the culture that he's created in the Jets dressing room and allow some of the younger leaders like Morrissey and Lowry to be able to set the standard in the dressing room.

I don't think any team around the league sees Wheeler as a $4.125M player anymore, much less a team that he would accept a trade to. His point total this past year was pumped up by excessive usage on PP1, where he still looked like a liability, and he hasn't looked the same since he got his groin-area surgery. A sweetener would be required to take him, and quite frankly it's just not worth it.

Fair to say, that this nightmare is on Chevy?

100%. Chevy has a very specific vision for what he wants in players (I'm not even convinced it's good), and he lets problems fester instead of making changes and deviating from his criteria. I don't think the 'Winnipeg' problem is as bad as it's made out to be, we can still trade for any player who doesn't have a NMC/NTC, but Chevy never makes a splash regardless. Draft & Develop hasn't worked out the way we intended, might as well get creative on the trade front.

Should never have been named Captain, and should have been traded a year ago at least
What was Peg going to add to dump that contract with years left on it? Perfetti and a 1st? He’s been untradeable for years. He’s deeply negative, which was worse years ago.

Buyout by far makes the most sense if they don’t want him around in the last year of the deal. Peg made a logical and realistic decision here. The alternatives were all much worse. Like trading him with sweeters.

Most bad contracts need to be ridden out.

Sounded really stupid until I checked his contract terms. 5 teams trade list. Yeah that does it, probably can't even trade him even at 50% if he's smart with his 5 picks. What an idiotic contract by cheveldayoff.

Oof, I was just going to say that surely it would be preferable to trade him at 50% rather than buy him out. But a 5 team trade list is brutal.

There’s always hope to get him to waive for another team. Burns did that last year so it’s not impossible.

Lots of pending UFA 8 year deals look not so great in years 7 and 8. Dont think the contract was idiotic though. Wheeler still put up 50 points. He still gives his all. He has simply slowed down.

Trade options would be extremely limited if he isn't bought out...

Mantha?
Voracek?

"Dangle" looks like a dude that would give himself his own nickname.

That said, if PLD, Helle, and Scheifele are dealt, I would hang on to Wheeler for one more year unless there is an advantage to the buyout? He's still a productive player, but he's very overpaid at this point.

Trading him at 50% is decently more than buying him out, 4.125 vs 2.75. Combine that with his 5 team trade list and it makes sense to just buy him out.

Obviously Wheeler will be losing 2.75mil in the buyout but I'm guessing he will sign a contract easily worth that amount with some other team.

It is time to turn the page and this way the club is giving Wheeler a chance to play wherever he wants and maybe even be lucky enough to win a Cup.

The guy was the right choice for captain at the time. But much like coaches, sometimes a guy gets kept past his expiry date.

He was the captain and hardest working player on the only team Winnipeg has ever had (1.0 or 2.0) that played well into May. I have a lot of respectful him. His style just has a shorter shelf life like a lot of great coaches.

Dude gave it his all against Vegas at his age. Played better over 5 games than PLD and Connor for sure...

Still has some hustle and setup ability to help any teams 4th line. He has defended leads last minute for us for more than half a decade. He will help a contender in the bottom six a lot I think.

Still put up decent numbers this year, if he signs cheap with a contender he could be a difference maker in someone's middle 6.

Could have worked long-term had Buff not gotten injured. I think that leadership duo may have been good, at least from what we've heard from people like Stastny who were there before and after, but not in between. Shame, really.

I think a team that picks him up will be happy with him. The borderline hatred against him on the main boards here is odd.

With 5 team list he probably wouldn't come to Ottawa, but he'd be a nice cheap add at 40-50% retained to replace Debrincat for a season or two.

If he wanted to be close to Montreal it would make sense but I don't think Ottawa is on his list, you're right. Seems like 5 contending teams and Montreal.

Rumors are Blake expanded his list but 2 pages on this? Seriously main boards? You are a crazy bunch. Jets fans are universally ok with moving on from Wheeler. But there's the chance Blake doesn't want to move on. Keep that in mind. Only way he's bought out is if there's no trade options or he wants to be. Dude was at the fan fishing trip this past weekend in Island Lakes, what a douche huh. PS: island lakes is basically a native reservation

 Steve Dangle.

I miss the old days when you could only post legit sources. Now anyone with twitter is seen as an insider.

Dangle has broke news before, it's more so he has a couple sources and sometimes he gets some info.

He also doesn't usually say anything he isn't fairly sure of because he knows he isn't an insider.

You are wrong. But they did have a trade lined up but didn't want to retain 50 percent for 2 years.

Also since when is random Toronto Podcaster whose 15 minutes were up an hour ago a source?
Dangle isn't going anywhere. Dangle IS the future.

You're rowing upstream here. Very difficult to have a reasonable conversation on a player like Wheeler when so many have made up their minds yet have know bits and pieces.
