Rumor: Steve "Dangle" : Wheeler out of Winnipeg, will probably get bought out

Whether they trade or buy out Wheeler, it probably doesnt matter really all that much for the Jets. Its time to move on (and has been for awhile).

With Hellebuyck, Dubois and whoever else wanting to go, they probably arent a cap team for the next 2 years regardless.

Time for them to retool and just focus on acquiring players/prospects that want to be there. Kind of feel bad for that fan base at this point.

I'll believe it when I see it. Just makes more sense to trade at the deadline at 50% from an asset management perspective. Still put up 55 pts in 72 games and 6 pts in 5 games in the playoffs.
Name a new captain to start the year and trade him at the deadline with max retention. The man wants to win and I'm sure would be willing to expand his 5 team list to include all playoff teams. He's been scoring at a .88 ppg the past 3 years (.92/.92/.76) and with the likely exodus of top talent leaving this summer, will still be getting plenty of top 6 minutes. I think most teams heading into the playoffs would love to add a 6'5 winger at the deadline. WPG can't afford to leave a potential 1st or 2nd + on the table should Wheeler continue to produce.

You are wrong. But they did have a trade lined up but didn't want to retain 50 percent for 2 years.

Also since when is random Toronto Podcaster whose 15 minutes were up an hour ago a source?
While I wouldn't claim Dangle is an insider he still has industry connections and doesn't strike me as the type of person who would just make things up.

This is likely something that was supposed to be off the record said to another media member and that media member told him.

It is time to turn the page and this way the club is giving Wheeler a chance to play wherever he wants and maybe even be lucky enough to win a Cup.

The guy was the right choice for captain at the time. But much like coaches, sometimes a guy gets kept past his expiry date.

He was the captain and hardest working player on the only team Winnipeg has ever had (1.0 or 2.0) that played well into May. I have a lot of respectful him. His style just has a shorter shelf life like a lot of great coaches.

Dude gave it his all against Vegas at his age. Played better over 5 games than PLD and Connor for sure...

Still has some hustle and setup ability to help any teams 4th line. He has defended leads last minute for us for more than half a decade. He will help a contender in the bottom six a lot I think.

Could have worked long-term had Buff not gotten injured. I think that leadership duo may have been good, at least from what we've heard from people like Stastny who were there before and after, but not in between. Shame, really.

I think a team that picks him up will be happy with him. The borderline hatred against him on the main boards here is odd.
100% agree.

Production wise I don’t understand people with these over the top comments about what a horrible contract it is. And the guy literally gave his left nut to the team.

someone is going to get a 55-65 point winger on a great deal. I don’t think he is just going to be able to walk into any half decent dressing room and throw everything off. That came through years of TNSE codling.

You telling me they can't find a taker at 5.5 million (with retention of 2.75 or so for one year) even for free??

I just chuckle at the idea Steve Dangle a youtuber knows a single thing about the Jets who are likely the most secretive team in the league. Good one

Besides this was already reported, Steve is just repeating a previous rumor/opinion.

If Wheeler gets bought out, what are the odds he winds up in Minnesota?

He's from there and may want to play out his career there. Is there a need for a player like him in Minnesota? Can they fit him in at a much lower AAV? Like, $1 million to $2 million a year.

Someone tell Steve that there is only one Dangle

I mean, the Jets were a good team, maybe even an overacheiver, during the Wheeler era. His brand of leadership worked....until it didn't. This is less coddling by managment/ownership and more the natural turn of events when it comes to a professional sports team lockerroom.

Interesting to hear a view from New York….

Trade him with retention to even up the cap for Garland. Vancouver gets out of a contract they don't like for one year of a 50-60 point player.

I'd definitely look at something like this from a Vancouver perspective. If they can retain to balance up the cap, it'd be a decent way of freeing up some future flexibility. Whereas for Winnipeg, i can see the appeal of getting a player under contract with a bit of term and stability. While also getting rid of Wheeler from a room that is likely to be undergoing some significant turnover and turmoil. I can see why the Jets wouldn't want him around in what could be a real power/leadership vacuum around young players.

Or his connections in the industry are giving him a helping hand as he ventures out on his own.

People attacking the source here before he has a chance to be right or wrong. As if the big dogs aren't 20% reporting and 80% controlling the message for teams...

Jets need players that rank high on the give a f*** meter. Garland has always come across as that. He plays the exact game that Bowness preaches but doesn't always seem to practice.

I remember then Jets/Wheeler signed this contract thinking how bad it is going to age. Signing a 32 year old to 8 million plus who peaked at MAYBE a top 5 winger at age 30.

It's the reply to the (paraphrasing) statement "GMs know what they are doing and fans don't."
I'd argue it's the cost of doing business as a contender. We wanted to keep the team together coming off a WCF season.

@Rabid Ranger I have to say your posts lately on Winnipeg topics are a breath of fresh air.

Jets fans have noticed that something was off since January of the year following the playoff run. We've just had an all World goalie to hide it.

Do you disagree? I mean, as a Winnpeger you have about the same inside the room intel as I do. I'm just going by what I observed as someone who has followed the Jets for several years.
He agrees with you based on earlier in the thread. Wheeler, after Maurice left, has become the whipping boy for our culture reportedly not being great.

It is nice to see someone recognize this as a bit of the natural order of leadership that the club has been a bit slow reacting to
Fair to say, that this nightmare is on Chevy?
Ultimately everything boils down to him.
