Rumor: Steve "Dangle" : Wheeler out of Winnipeg, will probably get bought out

I'd argue it's the cost of doing business as a contender. We wanted to keep the team together coming off a WCF season.
Aging curve is out there for all to see. Here's one.

You could look at Wheelers impact during that contract. I don't think he was worth the cap hit during any of the seasons. Maybe the first season?

Jets need players that rank high on the give a f*** meter. Garland has always come across as that. He plays the exact game that Bowness preaches but doesn't always seem to practice.

Yeah. I think that's a fair assessment of Garland. He's small, but he doesn't ever leave you really wanting for grit or effort and intensity. He plays hard and does seem to really care.

The idea of introducing Wheeler alongside JT Miller is a bit concerning from a Vancouver perspective. There's the potential for extreme amounts of bozo behavior. But i think you just have to trust that Miller has looked more motivated under Tocchet and there are other veterans in place who can hopefully keep things on the rails with Wheeler for a year.

I just chuckle at the idea Steve Dangle a youtuber knows a single thing about the Jets who are likely the most secretive team in the league. Good one

Besides this was already reported, Steve is just repeating a previous rumor/opinion.
Where was this reported? I saw lots of speculation and logic, but where does it say it is imminent?

You telling me they can't find a taker at 5.5 million (with retention of 2.75 or so for one year) even for free??

It seems that is the case. Maybe both Maurice and Bowness talking about something being dramatically wrong in the Jets room points to some players, like the one wearing the C, as undesirable even at half off.

Trade him with retention to even up the cap for Garland. Vancouver gets out of a contract they don't like for one year of a 50-60 point player.
I'd probably pay something for Garland's deal. The contract isn't exactly a steal, but he's a good and versatile top 6 winger coming off a clear down year. But again, leave it to the Canucks to totally screw themselves over for the next decade. If you can get Garland for free, pull the trigger.

Dangle isn't going anywhere. Dangle IS the future.

I'd be shocked if they can't find a taker. I can see him ended up back on Boston for a year, especially if Krejci or Bergy isn't back.

Wheeler is a very good player. Putting him in an entirely new environment where he isn't running the room could work out amazingly. His time's up here, but I think whoever takes him will be very happy.

As a Jets' fan, I think Dangle is right. It was obvious, for sure, but given where he is in his career I don't think he would say it if he didn't have a solid source. One wrong report where he is can ruin his credibility entirely.

Sounded really stupid until I checked his contract terms. 5 teams trade list. Yeah that does it, probably can't even trade him even at 50% if he's smart with his 5 picks. What an idiotic contract by cheveldayoff.
That's assuming he would like to stop them from trading him. That doesn't sound like him. He's really really proud and I don't think he'd want to be where he wasn't wanted.

his career is probably more successful up to now than yours and mine put together and has been for some time. He's got a full staff under him, advertising contracts and all he does all day is watch hockey and talk about hockey. And due to his status, literally anyone in the hockey world will take his calls.

I would say he knows at least as much as we self-pronounced experts of hfjets.

Yeah. He's still a big body with a lot of skill. That's why i'd be willing to entertain the idea of a swap like that. Canucks could use that size in their Top-6 even if he doesn't really use it in the most physically punishing way, or always give a full effort.

I think the strength of the room and the quality of fit on the ice is likely to play a big role in how effective Wheeler is in a new location. Not sure Vancouver has the really strong, clearly structured locker room to make it work...but i'd still gamble on it for a year.

Absolutely

I don't think any team around the league sees Wheeler as a $4.125M player anymore, much less a team that he would accept a trade to. His point total this past year was pumped up by excessive usage on PP1, where he still looked like a liability, and he hasn't looked the same since he got his groin-area surgery. A sweetener would be required to take him, and quite frankly it's just not worth it.
He's essentially a Cory Perry. Except instead of getting a good locker room guy who's won a cup, you're getting a whiny bitch that was the captain of one of the most disfunctional locker rooms in recent memory.

Miller and Wheeler in a locker room together… idk how well that’s going to work out

Can already see the memes

Pretty much knew this was coming, there was absolutely no way they were offloading that contract even @ 50% retention without adding a pick or something to offload it.

 I mean, like i said...that's the thing that would give me a second of pause. The potential bozo levels are absolutely off the charts. But you never know. It could actually work out really well if they jive like that. On the ice, their games certainly seem super complementary.

Worst case...we get some great memes and hilarious drama.
