I agree that we can't let the sport devolve into a headhunting bloodfest. As angry as everyone may be regarding the Prust hit, the sport has to come first or we all lose. So, although I am sure that Carcillo would not have jostled the official (or even taken the penalty) had the officials called the game properly, a hockey player just can't do what he did. The 10 game suspension is absolutely appropriate.

As far as Prust goes, retaliating against other Montreal players will change the Rangers' game plan, which for the most part has them dominating the Habs. Any change in the game plan is a mistake. Plus, do the Rangers really want to stoop to this level? Playoff hockey is intense and tough, which is great to watch, but I for one do not want to see outside the lines retaliation rough stuff, particularly since we gain a lot of fans during this time of year.

In fact, the real retaliation does not have to be physical at all--winning the series goes a long way.

Isles fan here. Staying on topic, my guess, the surgery was recommended to get Stepan back early. With a hairline fracture, they will insert a titanium plate connecting both bones together and limit the potential movement. Stepan will be ready when the pain can be withstood and breathing properly. My opinion, they preformed the surgery to fast track the heeling process. This injury would require a few months to heal on its own. Another reason I believe this may not be too severe is the swelling factor. Normally, they will wait until the swelling is reduced. Clearly they felt it wasn't problematic. I wouldn't be shocked if to see him in a practice tmr ( non contact) to evaluate his ability to breath properly. If he was going to be out for the remainder of the playoffs, they would have just let it heal on its own.

You knew something like this was going to happen when the Habs started talking their non sense. Then the refs are in on it. How do four refs miss that hit. I mean how the hell does that happen?

So right now it's about staying focused and eliminating these F@#$ers.

1st game next season? Whole nother story. Dress McIlrath that night and assist Pruster (not so gently) right into an ambulance....at the least.

But for now the Rangers need to keep their focus, use their speed, wear down the Habs, D, and crash that Fing net. Again and again and again.

If this does not motivate you as a Rangers player....I mean any player on that squad who is not totally balls to the wall the next few games should be gone.

A team should not be able to alter the game/series with a dirty play. Plain and simple.

Go back a few years when Donald Brashear goes out on the ice without even looking where the puck is, skates straight over to Balir Betts and takes his head off. Changes the whole dynamic of the series and Essentially ends the guys career.

Punishment for such "plays" shoudl be severe and go against not only the player, but the coach and organization as well. It cheapens the whole sport.

Why not send your 4th line guy our to cripple the opposing teams 1st line center? A 2 game suspension? Is that supposed to deter that type of play?

it's a joke. The officiating is a joke. The league is a joke.

I'm embarrassed.

I don't want the Rangers to do anything to jeopardize winning the series.

In the Fall I would have no objection to a Domi-Samuelsson special.

So I'm hearing that Stepan is out indefinitely, but also that he might be playing by Game 5? Any doctors on here?

I want to trade for Lucic now.

-snip the rest-

This is what makes it so bad. The refs KNOW Therrien and Prust have been talking about how Kreider targeted Price. Prust is a useless goon: what do you think he's gonna do when he and his coach spew **** like this?

Absolutely unacceptable that they didn't keep an eye on him at all times and missed this.

Broke mine in 1970 and was out of business for 8 weeks. Probably much worse than Stepan. Broke both upper and lower. Lower completely separated at the symphasis in the center of the chin. Had to be wired together. Upper jaw also broke clean in half and wired. Eight teeth also lost. Shattered into shards all the way to the root ends and took four hours to dig out all the pieces. Little bone pieces still make their way out today. Mouth wired completely shut and ate with a straw for 6 weeks. Last two weeks all food mashed or ground up with water and slipped in through the space that use to have teeth. Lost 35 pounds off a 205 lb 6' 3" frame.

Stepan like me or Crosby will be sidelined depending upon the severity of the fracture and how much wiring is involved in the closure of the fracture. If it is simply a hairline crack, he may be able to return with a specially padded helmet. It will depend on exactly what kind of fracture, where it is exactly, and how the fracture is repaired through the surgery. The fact that surgery is necessary says they may be doing something that requires him to sit out for a specified time.

Pain will also be a factor and whether or not he has any concussive issues form the injury. Mine hurts like Hell for weeks and simply walking was difficult with the dizziness that occurred for a short time after. It's all going to be based on the exact degree of severity of the fracture and its side effects.

There is a lot more involved here than just sticking a caged helmet on his head and rolling him out there. Use some common sense.

Maybe they did see it :sarcasm:

These plays are the equivalent of "professional" wrestling, when someone is losing so they go and pick up a chair and hit the their opponent over the head with it and somehow the ref doesn't see it.

IT'S THAT MUCH OF A JOKE.

Perfect post!

I still can't believe Prust did this to a former teammate. The **** is wrong with him?

Anyway, I agree with the posts wanting to continue our game. Don't play into their ********. We do that and maybe Montreal watches their season end at home.

Hats off to Stepan for coming back and still playing physical with a broken jaw. Hoping to get to see Game 4 despite being busy in Columbus this weekend/next week.

I want to trade for Lucic now.

Not me.

Trading for a guy like this is not the answer. Drafting and developing guys that make opponents pay a price is the answer.

And let me qualify that for all of you who will misunderstand or even misrepresent what I'm saying here.

Goons are not useless but I'm not a goon guy. Prust, for as much as we hate the guy has given the Habs a chance at winning this series with one hit. Albeit a cheap, dirty hit. So from a Habs stand point (damn them to eternal hell fire) this is a huge positive.

What I want us to have are a few players that can clean somebody's clock with a nice, clean, hard check. You can send a devastating message with clean hits.

No blind siding. No head hunting. No cheap shots.

That's what I want. And if a guy like McIlrath is in our line up and occasionally a beat down is warranted....fine.

“@imseanavery: What a league......10 games for what?
I used to pretend i was dumping the puck and instead try and hit the stripes :)â€

I expected something like 2 games for Prust. The hit was late, but he didn't target the head.
I knew they didn't take the fall into consideration, that's probably when Stepan broke his jaw.

10 games for Carcillo is tough. But as the rule says, it's an automatic punishment when you mess with the refs.

Hands off Lucic! Just beat those dirty habs. Send them home crying. They love to talk about any team they are playing as a bunch of goons. They can't see their team is even worse.

It's absolutely sickening to read someone rambling on about how carcillo is justly suspended while ignoring the lack of justice regarding stepan. Two games for a completely dirty hit by a scrub on our 1c and the talking point is carcillo reaction, what a bunch of *********. This league has no credibility in part because of all the fools in Toronto. Those same idiots can't build a successful Canadian team. If it wasn't for bettman, whom they despise, the league would be in shambles. Yet somehow we expect that they will get it right for once, however the truth of the matter is that they're incompetent and "in charge" so we continue to deal until the rats are out of the henhouse.

Many Habs fans comparing price to stepan situation. These are the same types of people making a mockery of this league. But hey just know carcillo deserved his suspension and we need to overcome all adversity because **** happens...

I say **** you and your horse!EH

This whole thing should further give traction to that idea the league has where each series is designated with the same crew of officials. Maybe if the same officials called every game they'd be on the look out for any shenanigans, whereas different crew teams have less of a pulse on things.
