Avs Nation, my sincerest gratitude for 8 great years. You allowed me to grow as a player and teammate. I will never forget the fans #Thanks

To the @Avalanche organization, you are a true class act. Stan, Josh, Joe, Patty, thank you for the opportunity of a lifetime.

I sincerely think he meant it. He would have taken something around .5M less to stay in COL, I'm sure of it. But he wasn't offered that.

Lets not kid ourselves, in interviews, he speaks of his role on the team, his town growing up, etc but the main thing that drove him out was the $. He just can't say it in interviews.

Paul will be 32 when his deal expires. I believe in the long run, he will make more money this way, then to have signed for 7 years at 6M and be forced in UFA at 35. At 32, he'll be able to command a good chunk of change imo.

Financially, good decision on his part. It is, after all, a job - a business. Would you keep working for AT&T if Verizon offered you more cash?

Debatable. He won't be signing for as much at 32 than he has now. He left $21M on the table to 35. Will he recoup that in his next contract? Probably not. I think he's being pretty honest about why he left, and it has very little to do with money and more about role.

Good stuff. Gave more respect to the organization than most players when they leave.

Staying in the same conference is kinda okay or at least not as much of a huge problem for me. Signing for a team in the same division is ****ed up though. BUT going to a team that not only plays in the same division but is also competing for the top spot in the division is sickening. Good job, Staz, can't believe you were my fave Av for a long time.

There's only four divisions now, and everyone in ours is strong except maybe Winnipeg.

Too much is made of him signing within the division. It's his home town, and they gave him a lot of money. Everyone else would have done the same exact thing.

After reading those tweets I've decided the Avs just respected him too much to dump him at the deadline. Call it poor asset management but they are just not an organization that dumps players for draft picks, signs guys to buy them out or trade them a couple years into their deal. They are known as a classy organization and if that's a problem to the asset management folks then so be it. The year they had last year was magical and special and no second round draft pick in return was worth giving it up for. Sometimes you just have to believe things in your heart and I believe they did the right thing. I also believe it was the right thing letting him go. It hurts but it's better for both parties. I hoped he was a lifer and they could put 26 back in the rafters but those things are not always meant to be.

I honestly haven't dwelled on this too much.

Stastny was a good player and I wish Colorado could have kept him. But it felt like the writing was on the wall for a few seasons; constant trade rumors and performance struggles by both he and the team.

I think 99% of us thought he'd be off the squad at this time last year, but both he and the team performed outstanding last season, so it seemed like he might stick around (especially with the slow Ryan O'Reilly negotiations).

Overall good player with Colorado, but in my mind his name (unfortunately) brings up memories of all of the dark years for this franchise, even though he was the bridge for players like Matt Duchene and Gabe Landeskog to getting the club back on it's feet.

I ****ing love this guy. I just started accepting that he was no longer a part of this team.

A true class act. A player that I absolutely love. If he stayed here then he probably would have ended up as my favourite athlete of all time but for now he'll have to be number 2. I am going to miss defending him all the time and I probably still will defend him even though he is the enemy. I remember waking up at 2 in the morning to watch him and the United States play in the World Championships. I didn't watch the Canadian games but I watched every US game because of him. The biggest dork in the world but that is part of why I love him. Not a very talented or skilled player but so damn smart. Top 15 defensive forward in the league and if you disagree with that then you're wrong. I remember reading in the Free Agency thread that he signed with the Blues and then I turned my head to TSN and they were reporting it. My heart sank and honestly I haven't felt pain and emotion like that in a long time. A lot of stuff has happened in my personal life recently but nothing has made me as depressed as Pauly leaving us.

My heart is broken and I'm not afraid to admit that I did cry and I probably will cry some more. As much as I hate the Blues, I wish Paul all the best. I know he will never read this but I'll never forget those eight years that he was here.

****, this hurts so much.

:amazed: oh boy...
Chill out... altough I had similar reaction when Joe Sakic retired though.

should've just stayed with Colorado :(

One thing about him, he is very smart. He sees writing on the wall, he got out in his career year. He made good business decision in choosing St Louis. By the time he is 32, he will make at least 68 million.

i was a Staz fan till the end
that said, while he's collecting his payday I hope we win a cup(s) at the same time

We should have made the deal.

It is sad there wasn't another option besides feeling he'd be pushed out. I too think he made a good decision, especially considering the sub 6m offer the Avs reportedly put out there.

I won't lie, I've never been a big Blues fan, but had a friend who moved to StL in the mid 90s so I followed them closer than many other teams. I grew to appreciate the MacInnis, Tkachuk, Hull era teams. Think the Avs could learn a few things from how that team has been built. Even was one of the few who thought we stole EJ from them in that trade and almost felt bad about it.

When it comes playoff time, as long as they are not playing the Avs, I will root for Stastny and Oshie who is also one of my favorites.

and I hope in 4 years, maybe Stastny will come back, play a few more years, get his name on the cup as an AV, and retire an Av.

The only thing that's different is the home town. Toronto was prepared to offer Gorges a lot of money, and desperately wanted him on the team. Guy just couldn't do it

The home town aspect, the amount of money, the fact Gorges was traded, the TOR-MTL rivalry being way more bitter and storied than the Avs-Blues.

I'm sure you were being a little facetious with your earlier comment, but I don't think Gorges is any more loyal than Staz. They were just very different situations. If he didn't grow up there, I bet he for sure would have signed somewhere else just to avoid being an Avalanche rival.

Hey Stewart and Shattenkirk...that's how it's done.

Like I said before Casper been waiting for this day for a long time. The moment they traded away his best bud he prolly checked out and waited for that contract to expire so he can go sign in the lou.

Stastny might be able to have made $100m from 3 accumulated contracts by the time his career is done. Not bad for a 1b center and 2nd round pick. Kudos to him, excellent business decisions.

He didn't really have to dig in and fight much for his money though. FG gave him that big deal pretty easily after Kopitar got his, and now the Blues gave him a big deal pretty easily on the first day of UFA.

It is pretty impressive the amount of money he's been able to earn though, given the type of player he is.
