The home town aspect, the amount of money, the fact Gorges was traded, the TOR-MTL rivalry being way more bitter and storied than the Avs-Blues.

I'm sure you were being a little facetious with your earlier comment, but I don't think Gorges is any more loyal than Staz. They were just very different situations. If he didn't grow up there, I bet he for sure would have signed somewhere else just to avoid being an Avalanche rival.

Lol it was obviously meant as tongue-in-cheek with Gorges, but reports out there do indicate that the Leafs were prepared to offer Gorges an extension worth north of 4 mil per season. Different values but money didn't seem to be an issue for Gorges, he just couldn't play for the Leafs.

I get Stastny growing up in St. Louis played a huge factor, but after what these two teams have been through against one another since the EJ-Shatty/Stewart trade, even without the storied Leafs-Habs like rivalry, I still don't quite understand how he could go to St. Louis. Money does talk, and that's understandable, and his home town too which is also understandable, but it just seems so hard for me personally if I was in his position to pick a team that you've had arguably the biggest rivalry against over the last couple of years. Gorges realized that, Stastny didn't

"A little bit more for me" is reference to not being behind Duchene and MacKinnon. There is a direct quote of that kicking around.

As for the dangerous weapons, here is how the two teams top-6 stack up. I did this comparison a month ago roughly.

Now Iginla replaces Parenteau, and Stastny goes on the Blues list, but the Avs are just as dangerous up front, if not more. Berglund should have been on there instead of Sobotka, but I thought he was being traded at the time I guess. I don't think saying the Blues have dangerous weapons is a slight to the Avs, or a surprise to anyone. They have a great team, and some great wingers for Stastny.

Yeah, I doubt he was saying the Blues are deeper up front than the Avs. Rather, that he'd be playing with guys who are no slouches. Overall, Blues scored at a comparable rate as Avs last season, and led the league in goal differential by a significant margin before their end of season injury rash. Blues defense is more involved in the offense, and their forwards are all two-way players. I'm sure Staz realizes this and sees his game fitting in well.

Also have to wonder about how he perceived Roy. Roy's successes as a coach this season notwithstanding, the guy has some growing up to do yet.

Why does Roy have growing up to do? Roy was probably the most humble coach all last season. He did whatever he could to give credit to the players and everyone but himself. He let his temper go once to show the team how committed he is to them and that was it.

All indications are that he loved playing for Roy and if not for that coaching change, he probably wouldn't have even considered coming back to the Avs.

I think he might have more of an issue with Hitchcock than Roy. Hitchcock's system isn't very exciting or friendly to offensive players. On top of that he's a whiny little *****. We'll see how that goes......

From what I've read, Staz will get more offensive zone starts and PP time with the Blues than he did with the Avs... so his offensive numbers may actually go up.

I will agree that perception is dependent on one's perspective. Who of us really know how the players perceive their coaches? Hence, why I said "wonder".

Considering he was on our top-PP unit, I don't see how that will affect that much.

Haha, so it wasn't quite as tongue in cheek.

The Avs-Blues rivalry is nowhere near the Habs-Leafs rivalry.

You don't have to wonder about how Staz felt about playing for Roy. It was blatantly obvious, and he mentioned many times how much he enjoyed it.

Dater said on his latest podcast that the Avs last offer was 6 x 35m

anything under 6.25m was a feeble attempt to keep him. Just a dog and pony show.

Disappointing, but trust in Joe and Patrick right?

Team finally makes the playoffs, and now we are all back to the "Avs won't be ready to make a run until next season" mentality. If the Avs finish outside of the playoffs this season, there will be little room to tease the Oiler fans anymore..

I'm surprised $6 million AAV was not offered. But the difference is minimal, Stastny would have walked on that anyway.

We're definitely making the playoffs. Too many hungry veterans and good young players.

I've been saying this for days. They really were not that interested in keeping him. The Avs were prepared to move on. And that's not a bad offer. Not the lowball some people feared.

Anything under 6.25M was the only thing reasonable for the Avs. In a few years, the guy will be the 3rd center on the team. Stastny could have and did get more money elsewhere, but he got it on a team desperate for a center. The Avs weren't that desperate.

$35m over 6 years is a fair offer for Stastny, but don't blame him for taking the Blues offer.
