Is he our 2nd best dman right now? This dude is gonna be an awesome shut down guy!
it's either him or demelo. id give the nod demelo since he's posted good results against stronger comp though.

would stanley be in the lineup if sbisa hadnt gotten claimed?

The thing I like about Stanley is that he gives us an element we don’t have now that Trouba and Byfuglien are gone. As long as he sticks closer to his own end (I’m a little worried about his foot speed) and plays simple, his reach, ability to intimidate, and strength can really help us.

i thought he had another good game last night. he's showing some confidence offensively and idk his speed seems fine. it's not a huge strength but not a liability at all. he needs to get the pucks on net though lol.

How do the Jets defence fare regarding this (I don’t know where to get these stats)?
you can go on naturalstattrick

i did it quickly - Looking at just Dmen

Jets rank 16th with 112 missed shots from the defense at all strengths

CAR has the most with 152, CHI the least with 78

Yeah I’ve been impressed with his speed when he gets going. Deceptively fast I thought. If he can work more on his first two steps to get going we’ll have a really good dman on our hands. I also think he’s going to put up some decent numbers offensively.

I also watched him quite a bit in junior he’s also got a bit of a mean streak he hasn’t shown so far. But being a rookie it’ll take some time.

Is it the jets defence aren’t accurate or are they being told to shoot wide for deflections and rebounds off the end boards? The consistency that shots are missing, almost leads me to believe that they are being told to shoot wide at least part of the time.

the top line likes doing the whole tip pucks/deflection thing. so it's possible.

they're middle of the pack compared to the rest of the nhl, so don't think it is anything alarming.

on the D; Stanley has the 3rd highest % of missed shots to Fenwick (niku and demelo are top 2), and 2nd most when compared to corsi (corsi includes blocked shots)

Niku only has 8 shot attempts so small numbers are large swings/%'s

I'd much prefer a shot that goes wide than one that is pounded into the shin pads of an opposing forward (Beaulieu and Forbort do that too much). Getting the puck past the first line is key to sustaining pressure and creating chaos. Very few point shots score without a tip anyway, and a lot of times the shot from the point is just to get it near the net and hope your team gets a stick, leg, or skate on it to funnel it at the net.

Still, I wish the Jets had one or two D that was more of a scoring threat from the point. Morrissey and Pionk can get the puck through, but they don't have any real power. At least Stanley has some power in his shot. I expect that he'll get better and better at finding opportunities to get it on net. As a starting point, he'll need to start rotating more confidently to the middle of the point as his forwards bring the puck up the boards on his side.

Stanley just needs to be more patient in the offensive zone. He's just putting his head down and shooting. He needs to keep his head up and look for lanes and tip opportunities.

Where he may have issues is in his side to side agility not being great as he will have a harder time opening his shot up.

He's done his job well in the dzone against weak competition but he's been saved a few times thanks to his long stick and some desperation reaching.

I still think his lack of foot speed will be problematic against the other teams best players but I am more then happy with his play as a third pairing dmen.

When was Stanley last exposed? He has played against McD. Isn’t he at least as fast as forbort?
Saved by long stick. It’s funny how it’s not considered just part of the package but his long reach is desperation. Jomo has been saved a few times by his speed.

i think stanley can do everything forbort can, and probably better. forbes-pionk has been great together, but would like to see maurice remove the kid gloves a bit and give stanley a bit of a look in the top 4

I am talking when he gets beat and desperately reaches with his stick and pokes it away. I.e when he losses positioning or a person has a step on him. It's happened numerous times this year. It is part of his arsenal but he needs to keep working on keeping the play I front of him.

He barely saw the ice against McDavid in the Edmonton games. Maurice is purposely keeping him away from the other teams best players. He's doing well against other teams third and fourth lines but there is a world of difference playing against that level of competition and regularly against the McDavid's of the world.

I wouldn't be overly critical on Stanley shooting to much, and or missing the net. Unless I am missing something, he seemingly gets pucks on net as well and if not, better than any of our defenders. And some of his misses are by design, as he has placed shots in areas for deflections and or to maintain possession.

He always has his head up when shooting, uses his height to get shots through. That is a skill that I would never want to deter the kid from using. Forbort on the other hand struggles mightily getting shots through, same with Demelo. Many times they get blocked and put us on our heels.

It seems like Stanley is becoming a bit of a driver offensively for this team, regardless of his points. When he was on the ice primarily with Dubois's line against Edmonton, thought that line was our best line. Last night he was primarily on with Lowry's line, and I thought they were our best line last night.

He seems to have the ability to control pucks down low, iso's the puck from the offensive player using his size and strength , and either skates it out, or makes a smart pass. He is not spending much of his shift in the D Zone.

And sorry, not seeing an iota of an issue with foot speed. To date, I have only seen Stanely flat footed and exploited maybe twice this season?

Last night he was flat footed and was able to recover and dove, knocking the puck back to Helly. Any other player on our team would have been hooped on that play, but Stanley took 3 solid strides, stayed with his defender than dove using his length to save a breakaway.

This kid is turning out to be a very solid D man for us. Next season could you imagine a combo of Samberg and Stanley manning the second unit. That would be a scary tandem.

I have no problem with pomo breaking in a young dman this way.

He has been caught a few times, and I remember those times when he had to use a long reach to recover. But it's not happening very often, and much less than I expected.

He will need to continue to be sheltered vs. McDavid, but I could say that about most D. Forbort struggles to keep McDavid in front of him, too. Otherwise, I think there is reason for increasing confidence that Stanley can manage in various situations. He makes very good decisions with the puck, and he's a solid passer, both in small areas and with stretch passes.

the speed stuff is probably some anchoring bias from what was said early in his career, or the typical "slow big guy" speak. He got beat once or twice this year, which NHL Dmen hasnt? he has the monstrous size and reach that almost no Dmen have to mitigate some of the damage if he does get beat. Also good positioning/anticipation/iq can help too.

he does have a high % of missed shots though. idk if it's by design or not. but he is playing with some confidence offensively...... just waiting for him to play with even more confidence physically, and then he'll be a force out there.

id like to see a stanley-pionk pairing eventually.

I think he can be a plus third pairing dmen for us that can PK and that is better then how he was tracking his first two pro years.

As mentioned no issues with him and DeMelo as our third pairing moving forward.

Get Heinola into our top 4 and grab RD at the deadline and I like our defense.

I feel a part of his game that is underrated is his passing, especially stretch passes.

A long stretch pass to a winger like Ehlers or KC during a change could lead to a few goals.
