You need balance on your team. Grit and skill matter. You can have a Marner on the team but also need some edge elsewhere. Toronto has too many of the same type of player in their core 4.

I think for Florida Huberdeau nor Barkov gave them that edge. Keeping Barkov and adding Bennett and Tkachuk types have helped but I still think Barkov is instrumental.

We have a good mix with Stuztle who is insanely skilled with Tkachuk. Lets see if Batherson can provide and edge on the 2nd line

Not only do I think Batherson can provide an edge on that 2nd line, but Norris isn't a push over either & if they re-sign DBC he looks like he can handle himself the way he went after Tippett. All three have demonstarted more jam than I have ever seen out of Mathews, Marner, Nylander, Reilly or Tavares for that matter.

I even think Pinto is going to be tougher than all of those guys & we know Greig will be a pain in the ass to play against. And then there is Ostapchuk & Boucher who could also turn into decent bottom six support players & hard to play against players.

Thats very true, we see it every playoffs, grit is a vital component to going on a deep run in addition to ample skill. Oddly enough, I used to think that we had too much grit and not enough skill, but with the emergance of Stutzle and addition of Giroux and DBC we certainly have great skill now. The loss of Paul, Formenton and Brown however has really hit our grit and peskiness has fallen off recently. Maybe Ridly and possibly Boucher can compensate for that in the future, but that remains to be seen. As of now though, we have lost that edge on the current roster and we'll need to find a way to regain it for next season

NHL marketing and Bettman take a ton of shit but they gambled going back to ESPN, signing with TNT likely for less guaranteed money than what NBC offered...

And it seems to be working on the TNT side where they have embraced the NHL. Remains to be seen with the ESPN side.

It's great that a recognizable name in the US like Charles Barkley is promoting it but people shouldn't look at this as an accident. If you want to be critical of how the NHL markets the game then you need to look at successes like this. They chose TNT. They've likely been working with TNT to find ways to promote the Stanley Cup Finals.

I don't know about that. Stutzle plays way more like Nylander he takes the puck to the net and the middle of the ice. Marner is all perimeter.
With Marner he avoids taking hits at all cost. In the regular season it works for him as he has a little more time and makes smart plays, in the playoffs with a little less time it often becomes a giveaway. Stutzle doesn’t avoid contact, not a good comparison.

He had the 2nd most net front goals in the NHL two years ago and 4th most last year. Congratulations on isolating one play you are so smart.

Bennett’s impact has been impressive. You see the opposing D looking over their shoulder and rushing passes when he’s on the ice (much like they Detroit’s D was doing for Brady in those two games).

You’ve got the think the sens were hoping for a physical performance like that when they picked Boucher. I doubt he’ll ever have the offense but maybe he can get to that level of intimidation.

I’d still like to see the sens add someone you know can have a physical impact now. Bertuzzi or Crouse would be great.

I have been impressed with Bennett.

They have added Kastelic who plays a rugged style & there is also Ostapchuk who could turn into a decent bottom six player & Kleven on the back end. They have some tough gritty players coming over the next few yrs just as the big guys are entering their prime.

Thats true, but for the next season or two, we'll still be a little soft. Not sure when and where Ostapchuk would slot in, same with Boucher, assuming both make it eventually and not get traded away, cause some of these prospect definitely will at some point, not enough open spots. Kleven seems to have an inside track for later this year or the following, forgot about him, he'll definitely help, we need his skill set on the backend as well.

Florida looking at an extended layoff now. Could end up disrupting their momentum, especially since their opponent, whoever it will be, will be in game mode.
