Anybody who watched Brown closely in junior should have seen the enormous red flags in terms of desire. Terrible pick IMO.
For a scouting staff that talks so much about the importance of character over every other characteristic when scouting, it's baffling they traded up to pick that dude.

Wow! In the whole league only Columbus. Leafs really do suck. The Leafs are the gift that keeps giving. They never cease to amaze me at how futile they are.

Oilers are us with two generational talents. Live off the PP, get nothing from their bottom six, terrible defensive coverage and shit goaltending. I really hope that isn’t us in our final form, not a chance can we win the cup.

New competent GM coming in + Alfie.

I'm optimistic.

Guess they weren't coming back like you predicted.

They went 6-1 down the stretch and are in the conference finals but 'didn't really figure anything out'. This board is hilarious.
I couldn't figure out what that post was about, so I just moved on. Some posts (& posters) are like that. I think you unravelled the mystery with your post though, so thanks.

Why would Bettman prefer Dallas in over McDavid or Carolina in over Toronto? The ratings speak for themselves
Well idea would be that the game would GROW down there because theoretically there is room for growth

Yeah I do be like that

Problem is that Dubas had a plan and even though it was obvious after a few years it wasn't working he stubbornly stuck to it. A good GM would have made a bold move before now and traded Matthews, Marner or Nylander for a top level goalie or a stud defenseman.

I'm always very critical of Dubas but one thing that screwed his plan was the pandemic. He was rightfully expecting the cap to be about $7-8M higher around now and then the pandemic hit. That essentially froze the cap for 3 years.

His worst move was signing Tavares.

The hockey world was kissing his ass 5-years ago because of this signing.

All hail Radko Gudas. The post mortems coming out of these playoffs are going to be fascinating. Leafs had many chances where I was expecting a goal but they missed. I cant imagine what they are going to do. I can already hear the cries from their fans to get rid of the skill for more character. That has worked for many teams and players in the past. Like the Panthers. Still though we have fans using the word ‘character’ with disdain as if drafting or trading for character is a weakness. Narratives from these playoffs could be wild.

Am I out to lunch thinking that Chabot could be like Montour if he played with intensity and an edge?

I mean I watched 95% of the games this year and its pretty clear there is not much accountability on this team. This team and organization and even some of its fans seem fine with mediocrity and the bare minimum.

We’re at 6 years without playoffs and all the coaches with longer tenure than DJ have cups or contenders.

You’d think they’d have gained the experience you talked about from the November stuff. Then again I hope you are right, we’ll see. I dont care either what other teams do but at times its pretty telling
We might be at 6 years without playoffs but the rebuild, well at least for me, begun the day EK was traded. Everything before that was just retooling and patch up work. One of the key reasons that led to the full out rebuild was the toxicity within the room and the disconnect between various levels of the organization. Strong leadership will, well it should, identify and resolve such scenarios before they get a chance to become problematic. Can't say that was the case under EK's captaincy and the teams coaching at the time. A broken lockeroom is a key reason why its been 6 years. It sometimes feels as if no one considers/sees the good and positives that have taken place and just find or look for negativity in everything.

Again, I can't speak on matters that only those who are around the teams coaching regularly can asses to. I am also just a regular keyboard warrior and not a NHL coach. One does not become a NHL coach just by luck. I am of the belief that JD holds players accountable, no doubt about it, he might just do it in ways that don't let everyone know or for everyone to see. Even though the team is young by NHL standards most of the players are young man/adults and most likely respond better to verbal dialogue vs being told to sit in the corner. Its like any other job, do you want a boss that respectfully reviews your performance or brings mistakes to your attention or a boss a that just sees the mistake, does not care why it happened and sends you home without pay each time he finds out. I guess to each their own and that's why one of us is a NHL coach and the other is not.

Understanding the process requires one to have patience and part of being patient is the acceptance of the status quo for specific periods of time. Currently the team is where it pretty much was expected/predicted to be. So yea I am fine with it because I've seen growth and improvements team wise the past couple seasons and I expect more of the same (within reason) next year assuming key players won't be lost for the lenght of the season to injuries (injuries will happen, its part of the game, hoping to avoid major ones) and if goal-tending delivers acceptable results with consistency. I am starting to sound like a broken record but all of this takes time and in my opinion Ottawa has done more with less. Teams like Buffalo & NJ for example had far better opportunities then Ottawa to improve simply by both having the 1st overall pick multiple times and picks in the top 3 likewise . Can't say Buffalo is outperforming Ottawa and they have flipped personel top to bottom and until this season NJ was doing worse then Buffalo and Ottawa all while having very experienced people in charge. Detroit is another example and to me the closest comparable to Ottawa, the progress and results they achieved are none better than Ottawa's. Lets not forget their GM is Ken Hollands (one of the best GMs to ever do it) protege and needs no introduction.

The whole fan base me included were hyped for this pick because the sens ditched there character mantra from years past with Colin White, Lazar, Bowers, etc and went with a boom or bust guy. I have no problem going for those kind of guys

If the sens add some speed and depth up front they should get in. Watching these playoffs its quite obvious what they are missing. It's not that hard a fix either. The D looks good the top end forward talent is good but they have very bad forwards after the first line when you look at this roster compared to who is left still playing.
If it's the right trade, I would take a guy who can score 25-30 goals and be a fast, aggressive forechecker and a 3rd line rw for dbc. Both have to be under contract.

That's my wish list if he has to be traded.

This consensus that the Canadian hockey market is somehow tapped out and has zero room for growth when this country welcomed a million new immigrants in the span of a single year - the vast majority of whom have likely never seen a hockey game in their lives - makes increasingly less sense to me.

Oettinger is really having a bad second round, and while Seattke's doing great, Dallas goaltending has made them look better than they are.
