He was a PP specialist the past few years in Tampa and wasn’t even playing Center anymore.

I love Stamkos but I have no idea how Trotz didn’t see that and gave him that deal. Tampa saw it and a few called them crazy because they only seen the point totals but yeah. Stamkos is cooked. Trotz is one of the best coaches ever but an awful GM.

I don't know if he's playing hurt but if he isn't then he's washed up. Looks awful out there. What a terrible signing.

In terms of straight line speed maybe but that says nothing about his ability to accelerate and carry the puck while doing so.

Nashville’s top 5 skaters (forsberg, marchy, josi, RoR and stamkos), 4 of them will be atleast 34 starting next season. Forsberg will be 31….yikes!

But he seems miserable. Not because he's in Nashville, but because he probably thought and felt his entire career would be in Tampa. Can't say I'm surprised he looks bad this year, he's human.

As for the contract, yikes.

To be fair the deal they offered him was a little insulting.. 3 million per for 8? When he'd be lucky to play for 5 more seasons.

I think professional pride got in the way a bit- TB looked at what he was now worth on a team going for a cup, and $3 mil was it. That stings when you used to be the man, battled through injuries, then your employer says “thanks, but we’re good. Someone will pay you more, and that’ll be a mistake.” Obviously they didn’t put it so bluntly, but that’s the interpretation I’d walk away with.

So Stamkos goes to Nashville wanting to prove ‘em wrong, and instead proves ‘em exactly right. That does, indeed, suck.

I find that the weirdest thing of all. I guess it says his top speed at full flight is still good but watching him out there, his acceleration and agility are just bad now. His slow movement out there is a big reason why he has been so bad.

Trotz is old school and is obsessed with his vets. His biggest flaw in DC was his obsession with older players even if they were clearly worse than younger options. He played guys like the corpses of Mike Weber, Mike Richards, Karl Alzner, etc over options like Jake Vrana and Nate Schmidt. Still have nightmares over him icing a pairing of Orpik-Alzner (at home, no less) against Pittsburgh in the playoffs and Kunitz skating through them like they were pylons.

One of the reasons the Caps won in 2018 was they were so hurt Trotz didn’t have an option but to play the kids. Him going out and signing a bunch of old dudes is very unsurprising.

Same. At 35 and 240 pounds, I can relate. But Stamkos plays in the NHLfor millions and I play senior hockey for a couple of hundred a game

Trotz was short sighted and trigger happy and that’s a dangerous recipe. Felt like he was trying to make a splash for the sake of it and with the money he did have, he used it to overpay players past their primes.
