If this thing has even a little bit of truth to it i am thinking that was in Canadian $ and not the US $. it would be around the $11 million or so in salary cap because players are paid out in US $. Another thing can be that front loaded deal like first few seasons at $14 per than declining making a cap hit more of Kane Toews range.

Maybe they mean 14M CAD? That'd be about 10.8M USD

Or, let's say it was USD.

His after tax income in TOR would be $6,542,046

Versus, in FL, his after-tax income being about $5M. So, still 1.5M less but stays with a contender he's familiar with and in his home.

Care to share how you did this calculation?

the leafs wouldnt have given him 14 million. if thats what he wanted, the interest would have ended there

Dont believe for one second he wanted 14 mill. Thats 3,5 more than Kane/Toews and 4 more than Kopitar. He is smart enough to know that would never happen. Probably just a way for reporters to talk him down because he didnt sign with Toronto....

Right...cause offering 8.5 is far less realistic than demanding 14 million...oh wait....he signed for 8.5.

The Leafs offered him what he is/was worth, he chose Tampa...we all move on.

A FA will usually sit and listen to anyone interested, if only to drive up the price.

8.5M in TB is a bigger take home paycheck than the same number in Toronto.

TB is a contender, Toronto is not. Usually terrible teams have to pay more.

"Stamkos would have easily signed a hometown discount to play for his childhood team!"

"Stamkos would never want to handcuff his new team, especially when they're still young!"

Stamkos never had any intention of playing with the Leafs.

He did it well though, sending out indications that he wanted to play in Toronto but only did it for selfish reasons.

He used the hearts of Leafs fans and the organization to extort more cash out of Yzerman. Yzerman never budged. He went back to Tampa with his tail between his legs.

Tampa fans on here at least, turned on him like white on rice and you know they weren't really wrong. He is not the best player on his team and in the end he didn't get more money, so good for Tampa.

Nothing against Tampa but I hope he never wins a cup with them, to me he's proven he's a piece of ****.

Who the **** likes at least 3 tweets accidentally as he said he did about playing with the Leafs.

So let me get this straight; he purposely became a distraction for his team and himself, solely to get more money, in the midst of a season where they were very much cup contenders, which had he won, he would probably have made more money

They weren't even allowed to talk contract numbers during the meeting period...

And this sounds like complete made up BS.

Maybe that was his opening demand and TO never got a chance to counter. In a negotation you don't start at your lowest point, you throw out a huge offer at first.

IF that's true that's a bad call all you need to do is look at the Cavs, everyone knows who really runs that team and they won a title.

If he wanted make us "his" team then we should have let him do it

Stamoks is nowhere near LeBron's level, and one star does not make a hockey team as can happen in basketball.

Can't speak for the whole fanbase, but me and most of the Tampa fans I know still think exactly that way. There is no reason to think otherwise until he proves me wrong. I personally do not think that right now he is worth 8.5 a year.

Looks about right, if not a little low.

14 million CAD is currently 10.8 USD.

His tax bill in Tampa is less because they have no state tax.

http://taxfoundation.org/article/2016-tax-brackets

NHL players work both in Canada and in the USA. A player on a USA team making money geographically in Canada is taxed at the Canadian rate for the games they played in Canada.

I suspect both you and the original guy I was asking assumed all 82 games are taxed in Canada is you play on Toronto, and all 82 games are taxed in the USA if you play on Tampa.

This is not correct, thus the numbers he presented are also not correct, and overstate the difference in after-tax income between the two cities.

I would believe this story more if it was reported by lets say elliotte friedman or bob mckenzie. 14 mil seems way too high.
